Come along as I hike 8 miles on the Appalachian Trail and the Cloudland Trail. I hike from Carver's Gap to Toll House Gap, past the site of the historic Cloudland Hotel, through the world's largest Rhododendron Garden on Roan Mountain, and check out a few incredible mountain views on my way to Roan High Bluff.

Thank you for coming to our Roan to hike and for showing everyone your incredible footage! We hope you come and visit again soon! Check out Bakersville NC just down the mountain from the Roan. The town is known as the "gateway to the Roan"!

Great job with the video! The blue ridge mountains have always been a part of my life. I grew up my first 11 years about a mile from the parkway in Western NC. But I never looked into why they were blue, so thanks for that tidbit. And I thought the same things about the cloudland trail. Definitely something you dont wanna miss! I didnt know those views were there even after visiting the gardens in the past.

Love this video and the detailed information. I went to roan Bluff the last couple days we will probably go one more day I will try this hike then. I went to Cloudland parking lot yesterday and it was amazing with all the clouds floating by the next day it was sunny. It can actually be kind of cool going on a cloudy misty day as well.

I'd recommend taking a gun seen a lot of black bear up there, also ran into some real shady people. Other than that it's beautiful up there.

Thank you for the detailed video about the hike 👏🏻 👏🏻 me and my group are planning to go the same place for sunrise on 12/29 Friday and the weather forecast says 40% snowfall. Any recommendations or suggestions from your side would be greatly appreciated.

Snow can be tricky on this trail if it's deep. It can pile up in places and holes will sneak up on you. Very easy to get a twisted ankle. Many people do this trail on cross country skis or snowshoes during the winter.

All of the Carver's Gap trails are open as of May 22nd, 2020. They even opened the road up to the Gardens up last week!
@TravisRhoads
@TravisRhoads 4 жыл бұрын
@@HikeSoloOutdoors the road up was what was closed the second weekend in June. I didn't know if that meant the High Bluff Trail was closed too. I will just have to do it next time!

@@TravisRhoads the high bluff trail was still open since the 22nd of May, but it would require the 7.5 to 8 mile hike from Carver's instead of the 1 mile hike from the parking area that you can drive to on the Garden road.

@@TravisRhoads yep. Roan High Bluff from Carver's and back is 7.5 to 8 miles if you hit the Gardens. That's the hike I did in the video and did 8.2, but I never only stick directly the trail. If you skip the Gardens you'll save yourself .75-1 mile.

Beautiful video! Thanks for discussing the differences in the Roan High Bluff area and Cloudland trail parking areas versus the Carver’s Gap parking area. I plan to hike the balds in November. Would you suggest the Roan High Bluff and Cloudland trail during the winter months? Looks majestic however I read here www.romanticasheville.com/roan.htm that the parking lot closes in September. Thanks!

The Carver's Gap parking area is open year round. The road up the mountain (past Carver's Gap toward Tollhouse / Cloudland) does close during the winter, although I'm not positive what date. However, you can still access the Roan High Bluff using the same hike as I did in the video. Simply start at the Carver's Gap parking area (that's where I started for the hike in the video). I think the Cloudland / High Bluff area would be amazing in winter. I personally like to avoid crowds, and the AT going south from Carver's (toward Cloudland) is always much less busy than the balds. I'd imagine once the road is closed there will be almost no one up there.

Awesome! I wasn’t sure if you started at Carver’s Gap because I didn’t see any mention of the chimney or the Roan High Knob Shelter in this video. Beautiful video and great detail provided. Also, enjoy your hiking group! :)

@@melprice4328 i don't talk about the chimney simply because I can't find much info on it. But the chimney is in the video around 2:15. I did not visit the shelter on this hike though. But yes I came up from Carver's Gap. It's an amazing hike IMO.

Too funny! I see the chimney is right before your discussion on the parking areas that I mentioned! Lol! Beautiful shot of the chimney. I think I was more focused on the information and details you shared throughout the video. But the music and the imagery shown throughout is beautiful. Apparently, the chimney suppose to be remnants from the Cloudland hotel. I believe the shelter is the highest shelter on the AT. Looking forward to heading south after checking out the three balds, or visiting on the following day! Thanks again!!!

@@melprice4328 you are correct about the shelter being the highest on the AT. The highest point of Roan Mountain is also right outside the shelter on the tall boulder pile you can climb on!
