My great-grandmother gave birth to a baby girl at the age of 50 in 1910. That child was healthy and lived a good, long life. My great-grandmother looked old back then despite the fact she was pregnant. I think it was the times and the styles. She thought it was “change of life”, but it was a baby. I had twins at 46 but even though I made lots of eggs (14-16 each cycle), they weren’t healthy. Maybe it was my PCOS or my Endometriosis. After trying many different intervention techniques for 8 years we finally used donor eggs and I had a super easy pregnancy. My mom had normal 28-day cycles every month until they just stopped at the age of 55. No spotting or further cycles. I thought she was exaggerating about this until the exact same thing happened to me at the age of 55, as well. We have late fertility in our family, but that isn’t necessarily a guarantee for a successful pregnancy. I’m always amazed at older women over 45 that have successful pregnancies without medical intervention. It does happen, but it’s an exception rather than the rule. I tend to believe that many celebrities are absolutely not revealing how they were successful. It’s no one’s business, but we need to be realistic about the average woman’s limitations in respect to fertility. I’m glad, however, that society is definitely more accepting of an older first-time mom. I got a fair amount of judgment when we announced my pregnancy back in 2011 from people…mostly older, but my husband (same age as me) got none. I don’t take it personally, but it irks me that there is a double standard, especially with long-time statistics of women generally living longer than men.

In 1928 my grandmother gave birth to my Aunt at age 48! My aunt was healthy and lived to age 75! My grandmother was pregnant as the same time as her 20 YO daughter so I have cousins the same age as my aunt's & uncle!
