🔴 Pikes Peak: Racing with NO RULES 👉 • Pikes Peak: Racing wit...
🔴 Pikes Peak's Top 10 CRAZIEST Cars 👉 • Pikes Peak's Top 10 CR...
Hillclimbing is INSANE, Look at this - [turbo noises] - it’s a homemade, 1000 horsepower, turbocharged, lightweight rocket ship. And it’s what Hill Climb Racing is all about.
Engineers building incredible machines, in their sheds - without corporate backing and SENDING IT up a hill - all to see who’s fastest.
And what’s better - is that there are almost NO RULES. So engineers can get as crazy as they like - so we’re going to go over our ten favourite hill climb cars - and tell you why they are awesome.
Hill climbing happens all over the world on stages like Prescott Hill in England which is less than a mile, to places like Pikes Peak, which is over 12 and finishes in the clouds at over 14,000 feet above sea level.
The tight corners, acceleration zones and incline means that the power-to-weight ratio and downforce are key. Expect cars with multiple turbos and MASSIVE wings to give them the boost and agility to set a good time.
This means that Hill Climbing creates some of the craziest-looking and most powerful cars in the world.

What happens when you let engineers have completely free reign? No regulations, no power limits and whatever mad aero design they can come up with.
Well, you get crazy-powerful, high-downforce - monsters.
This is exactly what they do in the Unlimited Division at Pikes Peak, where we get to see how they stack up against each other, as well as how it can go wrong.
Home-designed and made machines can compete against big-money international car companies to race to the top of the 14,000-foot mountain. A course with no run-off, no barriers, standard road-tarmac and 2000 foot drops.

I love that the organizers for Pikes Peak have embraced the no rules type of attitude which has encouraged a huge variety of builds and strategies to get up the mountain. The cars have just gotten wilder and wilder over the years and they've embraced that instead of stomping out the creativeness. It's brilliant.

I think the thing that gets over looked is that it produces drivers that naturally adapt to the strengths and weaknesses of the vehicles far more readily then what we see in more restrictive races like F1 or Nascar where everyone is using a cookie cutter car and thus the variance between cars and tactics is much smaller.

I've said that for years. Specify the safety cell, fuel (and quantity maybe), tyres and budget everything else, go for it. If they want to spend all their money on aero or engine and neglect the other fine. If they want to use what they already have and refine it, no problem. They want to throw all their engine away and move to turbine powered hybrid, sure. If they can do it within budget it's legal.

Shame you didn't include the all too often overlooked, lower classes of hillclimbing. There are roadgoing production car classes, meaning you can go racing on a very small budget too. Minimal safety mods and racewear and you can compete in a car you drove to the hill. I know you briefly included Prescott and Shelsley Walsh but British and European hillclimb championships, have some incredible cars too that do have to comply with regulations but still put on a great spectacle.

I agree. To me, EA888 VW blocks with all sorts of bike heads, with all sorts of modified displacements and fitted into all sorts of chassis are much more interesting than some of these Pikes Peak machines, simply because they're engineered to work and last a whole season of races instead of a single annual one like the latter. Not to mention some "freak" builds like an Opel Kadett with an LT5 engine. 🙂

I've driven an RS200 on the test track at Ford's Development site at Dunton. A friend had been working on it, and thought I might be interested as I owned a Laverda Jota, which was the fastest road bike available at that time. This was a full rally spec car with 450HP. Initially, I was not terribly impressed, but when the big turbo kicked in, the car accelerated with a violence so intense, I was left wondering how anyone could possibly concentrate and think fast enough to control it through a Welsh rally stage with trees either side of the track waiting to kill you. Another friend moved from my section to Boreham where the RS200 was built. He told me interesting facts like the Kevla body panels had to be replaced event as they were abraded away by gravel spat at the panels by spinning tires.

Personally i think the way to go for pikes peak is electric. It has zero power lose due to the thinner air. You get the same power at the top as you do at the base. Since no rules you can have traction control to reduce wheel spin and you also have instant power that can be added or removed from the wheels that slip individually. I think the setup would be fully carbon fiber, lightweight carbon tub, moving ground effect skirts and active suspension, full traction control, and maybe a medium size wing. Powertrain would be 4 individual motors driving all 4 wheels.

For the sub-minute hillclimbs, you could get an AWD electric setup on a TINY battery. Something like a modern Formla E car, with front axle drive enabled, rear brakes added and the 51 kWh battery reduced to 10 or 5 kWh, but more power. Something like the Koenigsegg Regera 700 hp battery upscaled or boosted. Replace crappy wheels with wide quali slicks, replace fake aero with real aero. BOOM, 600 kg, 900 hp, AWD car. Good for about a minute. tops :)
@Thee_Snow_Wolf

600 kg is too heavy believe it or not. To be competitive on the British hillclimbs, you need to be in the 400 kg region. I know of a company whose ultimate goal is exactly this. If they manage it, their cars should be bloody rapid.

To be honest. I’ve watched a lot of racing. I really enjoy hill climb, and auto cross. Not that I have the skill for the hill climb or the funding. But I can afford auto cross but still get the thrills where time is the opponent. This just reminds me to build a car and get started. Have have lots of fun.

I’m a new Opel kaddet fan ever since getting into hill climb racing videos you can do some cool things with those cars. I live in the us and Opels kaddets are few and far between there are probably only a few here in the states but I keep my eyes open because I want one to build a race car from.

The name of the game is downforce/weight. Horsepower is merely to pull more wing.

One wrong thing with the RS200 that you said. It doesn’t have a 2.4L Cosworth engine. It has a 2.4L BDT-E engine. And the BDT was the 1.8L for the’ original’ RS200’s. While the BDT-E is for the Evolution, that’s what the E stands for

Ken Blocks porsche 911 HOONIPIGASUS didn't get a mention. Only a casual 1400hp in a ground up build. Thought it was pretty cool.
