Lol, you make me miss my grandmother's cooking. She made stewed potatoes and the apples quite often. She knew how to dry her apples outside in sun and no insects or birds, etc. , bothered them. Of course I remember helping hang clothes to dry on clothes line. 😒. Not much money, but always had plenty. I even helped her make the lard, and wash clothes in huge cast iron wash pot. Miss those days.

I think us Arkansans have the best home cooked food! My parents had a large dairy farm so I got elected to do most of the supper cooking. If it wasn't fried or mashed potatoes, it was stewed. I'd pour the juice over some crumbled buttered cornbread...so so good! Love watching your videos and remembering the good old days. 💗

Yum I think that my Grandma made stewed potatoes and we were told it was potatoe soup the only difference was she would also put fresh parsley in at the end also . And she always served elderberry jelly on her home made bread with it . Oh my Miss Lori I sure wish I was with you so I could have some of those potatoes . Mama used to make this with the first new potatoes of the year. We couldn't wait for her to tell us to check to see if we could get enough for supper. Tiny little red potatoes scrubbed, boiled and stewed with a lot of pepper and a knob of butter. A pork steak and some butter beans out of the freezer, corn bread. Nothing better.

My momma made these same potatoes sooo many times. We loved them when we had fresh corn and purple hull peas from the field. We never went hungry and ate home grown country food all my life. Best there is!!

My Irish grandmother called this creamed potatoes. She added butter rolled in flour and heavy cream. Lots of pepper and onions were often boiled with the potatoes. They thickened up nicely. She served them as a side dish to ham. Loved them. In Ireland, this could be served as a meal on its own with soda bread.

My grandma called the juice from the stewed potatoes "pot liquor " & as a child i for the longest thought my grandma had a drinking problem she made them so much ❤

My Grandma, who basically raised me, called stewed potatoes “Mom’s potatoes” for her mom, my great grandma. Potatoes were sliced thin, covered with a little water and seasoned with bacon grease, salt and pepper. We traditionally had them with salmon croquettes and stewed tomatoes. Your cooking brings lots of good memories, Miss Lori. Wish I lived just down the road. 🥰

You just solved a mystery! My grandmother used to make something that she called "creamed potatoes and peas." It was absolutely my favorite side dish and this looks very similar. She used half water and half chicken broth. Grandma would add a handful of frozen peas just before serving. The peas would stay bright green and it was so delicious. Now that I know the secret (flour and water), I am going to make it soon. Thank you so very, very much.

Thank you for showing how you make stewed potatoes! I'm almost 65 years old and lost my Mother about 5 years ago. Never thought to ask her how she made certain foods. Guess I thought she would be around forever. We grew up in Arkansas also! I've now buried all of my family and sadly have no one left to ask how Mom made certain foods. I am trying to incorporate more dried beans into our diet for fiber and cook more natural foods instead of using store bought canned. I cooked the best pot of pintos (my favorite!) with my left over Christmas ham. I also cooked some cornbread from scratch! It reminded me of suppers I had when I was a child. Mom would make pintos, stewed potatoes and cornbread for dinner a lot and served with hunks of onion. As a child, we would put the potatoes and bean on top of the cornbread along with their broth. So I tried my hand at remembering the stewed potatoes. I didn't do a bad job so this video helped me! Thank you for helping bring my past into the present again!

Oh, this brings back memories! My little Granny made this, but didn’t call it stewed potatoes. I’m so glad you made this video. She had a little red plastic shaker that she mixed the flour and water in and poured into the potatoes, and added onions to the potatoes. That was some good eating right there. Definitely saving this and making it real soon. She also made it with the tiny new whole potatoes from the garden sometimes.

Oh my goodness. Such memories right here in my little house. Grandma was from the northern prairie. She made potatoes like this but called them creamed potatoes. A little bit of chopped onion from the cellar in winter or a bunch of green onions in summer made them taste special. Sometimes, to make a quick, thrifty supper she made creamed fresh peas in just the same way and served them over bisquits. She stewed fruit like that too. Served them up after supper beside a piece of plain white cake. Such good memories :) Thank you!

Oddly enough, I still cook like this. I remember being in the kitchen as a child as my great grandmother and grandmother would cook together. I learned early and wouldn't change a single moment of those precious, wonderful times. Thank you for bringing such delicious recipes to so many. May they be as blessed as I was.

We add "thickening" to potato's, squash, stewed tomatoes and green peas....I think it was a way to stretch the meal. And since we grew up in an orchard area, apples were used as a vegetable. My grandfather had an orchard and they ate apples at nearly every meal. It's what they had.

I love stewed potatoes. We always called them creamed potatoes 😋 . My Mom always put frozen peas in them they were and are so good 😋I make these once in a while they are a comfort food totally . My grandma was in Joplin Missouri and since my mom was afraid of the cows out back I knew I could sneak out of my window and go to the creek to go fishing. Daddy was overseas a lot at that time so mama would send me up to grandmas-A lot! I loved it because of the woods across the road from grandmas and I had a blast. I swear and I am not lying, you could smell grandma making stewed apples! My mouth started watering as soon as i read what this vlog was going to be!

My dad would make stew potatoes with the first crop of new potatoes was the best. He picked out the baby potatoes and make a huge potential with cornbread. We new after potatoes got plowed up and in the barn. We got two things the best meal every and than a afternoon at the creek hole for working the fields. Usually potatoes was 10 to 20 acres. Stewed potatoes is my husband’s favorite. His mother made them when he was a litter boy in Tennessee. She added a little of corn meal instead flour. Yummy.

My mother taught me "stewed potatoes & onions." Peel & cut up potatoes into small chunks, rinse with water. Dice an entire onion, adding to potatoes. Add salt, pepper, butter or margarine. Cover with water 2" above mixture. Cook till done, then cook till almost a boil, then turn off heat. As the potatoes cool they will thicken. Lori, yours looked awesome. I learned to make stewed potatoes from an older lady who worked for my aunt. She peeled and cut her potatoes, put water just to the top of the potatoes, add seasoning, and sprinkle flour over the top. As the potatoes boil, it picks up the flour and thickens itself. Stir when done. Delicious!! And Easy.

She would lay 3 strips of crisp bacon over the big mound of apples in the serving bowl. So she must have cooked them in bacon grease. They were so good. Yours look so delicious too! Ms. Lori - I was one of those who asked what stewed potatoes were - thank you for sharing. I will be trying this. I love potatoes, be they baked, boiled, mashed, fried, etc. lol The stewed apples I have made many times, and also do pears this way too. Never add sweetener as find the fruit has enough of it's own sweetness when done this way. Peaches would be another good fruit to stew.

Although my mother wasn't from Arkansas, she married my father who was. On their wedding day, I've been told, my dad asked my mom to make cornbread every day. My mother kept that vow. Only when she couldn't, we had cornbread. She cooked very country because that was what they like and being in the great depression, things were scarce. I love the looks of those potatoes and that is what we're having for dinner tonight. I have three apples I need to use up and they are going to be on the plate too. Oh goodness those potatoes bring back memories! My parents, who grew up Amish and Mennonite, used to make stewed potatoes except mom would add some sliced smoked sausage and peas or snow peas to it. Loved that growing up! So simple, delicious and filling 😍

I don’t remember ever getting those stewed potatoes at home. and my husband’s mother who was the best country cook, never made them either.My husband loved mashed potatoes and wanted them every night for dinner.and fried potatoes for breakfast.When we had our 3 boys, we would buy a 100# sack @ the potato warehouse in the fall. to keep up with my potato eating gang. 100# would last about 2 months, then we’d go back for more.They were great big potatoes, grown in Eastern WA and idaho. You can’t find the big ones at the store nowdays. But my favorite potatoes were the little tiny ones that my grandma’s cousin grew in her garden in Big Timber, Montana.They coudn’t grow them any bigger because of the short growing season there. She would boil them and serve them with melted butter and sausage, with a little pitcher of the sausage grease to pour a little over. Oh so good. I never knew about stewed potatoes like you make them in Arkansas. I guess it depends on where you ive and where the family came from My Dad was raised on a farm in MO, and he told me they ate a lot of meals of just biscuits or corn”pone” and gravy. My folks and my husbands folks all grew up in the great depression and my in-laws were from W.Virginia and OK, and my mother-in law grew up camping with the whole family living in their car on the road, looking for work. Those were such hard times and my Dad, even though his family lived on a farm and did not go hungry, He could not talk about those times without getting tears in his eyes. Our elders warned us that the good times would not last and to always be prepared for hard times could come back. it is such a good thing to see Miss Lori and Mr Brown sharing their “way of life” and teaching the younger generation how to prepare for and be thankful to the Lord for our blessings and comforting us oldies too. ❤️

Every morning of my life growing up in the mountains of western NC, my pa-paw made a huge pan of biscuits and stewed apples from the orchard before he headed out to work at Dave Steel. Loved those days. You brought back good memories. And stewed potatoes are wonderful.

I grew up in West Virginia and my Mama Pearly Alice made these all the time, but she called them creamed potatoes. She thickened with corn starch. So delicious with her pone of cornbread or fritters and lots of greens onions out of the garden.

That's the way my mother made stewed potatoes. I'm 68 and I still make them the same way. The only difference I never put onion powder in mine but I think I will try it next time I make them. Have a blessed weekend.

Miss Laurie I made your creamed potatoes about a week ago after watching this video. They were wonderful but it made alot so we ate it over a few days as we have no problems eating leftovers. On the last day there was only enough for one of us so rather than fight over who got to have it I added a can of white navy beans. It was wonderful! Cute little piglets... Blessed New Year to Y'all, with Health, Wealth and Life, new beginnings... Your posts reminds me of my Moms and Grandmas and alot of my Aunts cooking... Makes me miss them...Your post makes me Homesick sometimes... I miss the farm/country living terribly...I miss all the baby animals that come with farms too. They are so sweet. We made pets of everything that would let us... We had meatloaf and stewed potatoes and cooked/stewed/baked apples, not always at the same time...Alot of Fried Chicken and we had beef in freezer too.Pork. Big gardens for canning.The farm Dad bought was a Dairy/Crops and it had alot of Apple trees on it, that I think the other owner sold for extra income...There was 6 of us kids on a Dairy Farm, we were usually a hungry bunch; because everybody had to work...I made my first $50 picking cotton when I was 5 years old. I drug that cotton sack all day. Daylight to dark. We got to dump it/weigh it at lunch time... I was So proud of my $50, Cotton bole stuck fingers and all... They didn't put up with much fussing and fighting amongst us, they had a cure for that; More/extra work. If you still felt like fighting after Cleaning fence rows, you could go at it...Farms have alot of fence rows...lololol God Bless...

My Indiana grandmother called these water potatoes. Mom thickened her potatoes with milk cornstarch and grated cheese. She called them creamed potatoes. It all says comfort food. Blessings!

I grew up in Arkansas and TN. We often had stewed potatoes, but I've never seen my Granmaw or Mom use flour. It always goes well with meatloaf. A low cost meal. They would mash a few of the potatoes when done and add milk. The broken potatoes caused it to thicken up. I'm in my 50's and have made them the same way. This looks like a great alternative.

I've made stewed potatoes but it's been awhile. Most of the time my kids would go ahead and mash them up and turn them into mashed potatoes so I just started making mashed potatoes instead. But now days I think they would love them stewed. I know I love them with lots of butter and seasoning. My late husband loved stewed, fried, baked apples. Oh thanks Miss Lori! I was one of the ones that asked about this recipe as I have never seen stewed potatoes in Australia. Looks like a delicious dish, especially for winter and I think I'll make them this weekend. Our wood oven is on around the clock at the moment so perfect for stews. We also love stewed apples, and my husband and children especially love apple crumble so I make it once a week at the moment. Also a lovely wintery dessert, especially with warm homemade custard!

Thank you for sharing. The stewed potatoes are similar to creamed potatoes we made in Indiana. I would have drained some of the water and added cream or half and half. I can’t remember if we added thickener or not but it might have been cornstarch. We also added some dried chives. Haven’t had in a long time. I love fried apples as well . I've never had potatoes cooked like that before but it sure looks yummy!!! But we did have fried apples very often..... Mama would go out to the apple tree in our back yard before supper and pick a mess.... I can still see her sitting at the kitchen table peeling them in my mind.....such a precious memory!! Hi, I live in northern BC in Canada and my mum used to make these potatoes but we called the. Creamed potatoes. I think the only difference was she drained them and then made a white sauce. So good. My Grandmother was young and lived in the Depression~ she continued to eat stewed potato’s until she passed away at age 92 years old. Stewed Potatoes & Cornbread… she loved it.

I think I remember my mother-in-law using canned milk in her stewed potatoes. Man I loved those!

That was my grandmothers Stewed Potatoes… such good memories…and her fried apple pies..

Always wanted go back to the old ways of life.country living would have been ideal for me,but now I am 75+yrs of age and live alone.it would be to hard for me to do so now..I was brought up on Long island,n.y. when it was potato farms,one little man owned store with limited food .later a a & p opened in a town 1/2 hr. Away.with a 5 g10 cent store next to it...that was a big putting for me & my mama.we went with her fried,they would stop for food ,mom would give me 5cents sometimes 10 cents,to buy what I wanted in the 5&10cent store.i always bought the bobsey twins books.yrs things back then we're 5&10 cents,y'all.but for mom,it was a sacrifice.money was tight back then for mom & dad. But I never knew till yrs later when I became a adult .they never let us know.but we never went without.back in the day that's what Mom's & Dad's did.we had a loving family.and that's what made us rich.,in love. Grandma lived with us.she was wonderful , passed away when I was 13.still think about her very often.still have her little coffee pot she made her black coffee in.it sits on my stove nowfirst thing I have always unpacked whenever I moved.also have the egg holder she use to feed me soft boil egg from. Both are way over 80 yrs old I have no one to leave them to,it hope who every may find them on my stove will keep them as antiques.but they will never know what he memories they hold.

We were from Southern Ohio and my Mom and Grandma made these and them "soupy potatoes". We had stewed apples too. Love your videos!
