To clear things up... 1. No air filters because: Sand is heavy and thrown behind the vehicle/ the engines are rebuilt constantly/ air filters=restriction. 2. These are all 6 cylinder engines. A built inline or V6 is capable of producing over 2k horse power. I would say 'well built' but, lol, clearly these engines aren't. 3. The sand is loose and at low speeds you simply sink like you would in snow. Interesting sport. A lot of slapped together/not well thought out builds though

And judging by the frequency with with they explode, I kind of have to wonder if they AREN'T using 100psi of boost, or close to it. I know of gasoline engines that have been built up to to 80's and survived, so it's possible these are even higher. Seems to be more or less a contest of "how much boost can you put into the engine and survive the hillclimb too". I mean, even most of the ones that make it up the hill are blowing oil smoke out the exhaust by the time they get there. It takes pretty high boost to blow your piston rings in one pass!
@glumpy108 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the builders of these cars would do better to concentrate on getting to the finish line rather than getting their engines to do 20,000RPM an try and get 5000Hp out of them. First thing you have to do to win is finish and so many of these didn't do that.

why do they never use air filters and yet race them in the worst possible environment for an exposed turbo?
@anndyman729 жыл бұрын
Maximum airflow. With the turbos mounted high and foward (in most cases) of the front wheels diminishes the chance of sucking up a heap of sand. These engines only last about (maybe) 15 to 20 runs between rebuilds. They are not following anyone either so their air into the turbos is pretty clean anyway. Thats my guess.

And of the full runs, 50% of them either had catastrophic engine failure, near complete loss of power or had caught on fire at the finish line. The V6's did somewhat better with a 36% fail rate.

what about those straight intake manifolds? Is there any engineering or they just pray for even boost on all cylinders?
@shutthehellup66664 жыл бұрын
There is a lot that goes into flow characteristics but basically your typical aftermarket Inline 6 and inline 4 intakes mare shaped with volume reduction for the last two intake ports. This is because the flow path is pointing that direction. Filling a container with a garden hose. If you spray the water in from an angle the water goes off in different directions at a different rates of speed. But if you hang the hose directly over the center and cascade the water into the container it will all flow to the edges at a very similar rate of speed. Its not the intake pressure that makes the difference necessarily. Naturally aspirated engines would have the same issues with a poorly designed intake.
@mitchoh6174 жыл бұрын
Loll Tony is right sskkuuddrraa, have you ever wondered why a lot of imports melt no.6 piston on a i6 or no.4 on a 4? Tapered in manifolds* the air goes where you direct it, it won’t take sharp turns so it melts that back piston. You’ve been learnered* 😂👍

the catastrophic engine failure has absolutely nothing to do with the tires flinging sand into the turbo. farrel factoid states the more sand to turbo the higher the boost pops.

Don't worry, they're rebuilt every other race. At this point they most likely fabricate their own blocks/heads based on the TB48/1FZ design anyway.

Just want to point out that top fuel drag cars get engine rebuilds every run...

How much boost these things running on ? I say around 50-60psi, the sound these turbos making is freakin insane
@ReolSPro7 жыл бұрын
10% less HP would be doing it, at least your engine would survive more than one race
@MarcAntoine0067 жыл бұрын
if they remove one sticker : 15hp less

20:15 Good God Subzero! Fast as hell run, but for crying out loud, strap your helmet and get a better rollcage. That was almost as quick as the V-8s so youd think they could invest in some safety gear?
@edwinbeck4568 жыл бұрын
put a damn air filter on the turbos jeez
@tat2dredhead764 жыл бұрын
Air filters slow down the air, plus they have them really high and In the front so sand is less likely to get in them it's actually really smart

@Spinsane949 жыл бұрын
Matt Pamplin Not really, it's like mud racing, you want to run on top of the sand. So you need gobs of power or a good chassis setup (or both) to do it.
