Great video! The whole DCM issue is very complex. I think it’s important to understand that some breeds (husky/malamute/Akita) are intolerant to starch but this does not necessarily mean grain free. Many grain free diets are high in starch and this is where the marketing takes a horrible turn. Royal canin has an article that discusses this issue but KZfaq is not letting me post it lok

Sadly, however you slice it, pet "food", whatever the brand is highly processed stuff, has lots of fillers, preservatives for long shelf life and is big money. Life expectancy for our pets is getting shorter and shorter, while all players in related industries are lining their pockets. Regarding this lawsuit, I agree with you that it is clever marketing.

Hi Glenn, I would like your opinion/suggestion on the following matter that "puzzles" me: As you know, I have been a big follower of yours since I found your KZfaq channel and I have really learned a lot from you. So since then, I have switched my dog and cat to Science Diet because of their well-balanced nutrient levels and all. However, I am now confused as to know which food to give my dog. He is a 7.5 year-old Cocker Spaniel and he has been on SD Adult Perfect Digestion, Salmon, Old Oats and Brown Rice Recipe for the last year. Now, I was considering switching him to the Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken, Whole Oats & Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food . Here is the thing: the difference in the nutrient levels really confuse me as to know which food is best for him. Here is what I mean: The SD Adult Perfect Digestion, Salmon, Old Oats and Brown Rice Recipe: Protein     25 % Fat   15.5 % Carbohydrate / NFE      51.1 % Crude Fiber 2.5 % Calcium     0.88 % Phosphorus  0.73 % The SD Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken, Whole Oats & Brown Rice Recipe: Protein     21 % Fat   13 % Carbohydrate / NFE      57.9 % Crude Fiber 2.2 % Calcium     0.92 % Phosphorus  0.65 % The Adult 7+ has higher Calcium levels than the Adult line. So, shouldn't it be the opposite that is: the older the pet gets, the lower the Calcium level should be??? I am very puzzled because as I have browsed the Hill's website many times, I have found that quite a few of their mature/senior pet food have higher nutrient Calcium levels than their adult food. So, what would you suggest I do??? Should I keep him on the Adult Perfect Digestion Salmon food or switch him anyway to the Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken food although the Calcium levels are higher??? This matter is important to me in order to give the best to my dog. I must say that my own vet, whom I have been with for 25 years, does not really care when I bring this up to her, so this is why I am turning to you. I hope you can help me figure this out! 🐶🐾

From what I remember from my research about a year ago is it's not so much grain free is bad, it's what they used to replace the grain. I don't remember the ingredient that causes heart problems. I'm sure someone can clarify this. But now hopefully the pet food industry has made changes and actually do their research of ingredients to make it healthier.

Thanks for this video. I followed the DCM information and Facebook for quite a while, but it did not affect what I was doing with and feeding my multiple dogs, all rescues, so I backed off for a while. I did see what this lawyer said about his line of products, and I did feel kind of sorry for him. His line of foods was marketed as high protein at an affordable price because so much of the protein was from peas. The reports about DCM suggested pulses -- which peas are -- might be a problem. So if so, his entire line of products could be a problem. Goodbye to his investment in the ever-growing pet care supply market. Anyway, I trust the bigger companies more, for reasons you discuss. Having rescue dogs, many of which were in poor health, I was leery of new companies and new diets. And I was too busy to home cook for multiple dogs. And I wanted to feed them something their future adopters could find easily. Anyway, I did appreciate most of what you say, except I am sorry for whatever makes you believe all lawyers are leeches. I worked in the legal and judicial system for a long time, and I disagree with you about that. Anyway (again), I really suspect this lawsuit will not succeed. This guy probably should have either stayed in the field he was trained in or gotten into some business other than what he did in the way he did. Pet nutrition seems too complicated. Do what you want with your own dogs, within reason, but don't mess with my dogs!

Notice how this guy NEVER discusses why the method of making dog food matters . The HOW matters but all he can talk is nutrition profile and defend his previous corporate employer, Hills. I hope no one buys this sh!t!

In particular, is it appropriate to use chickpeas, pea protein, peanut protein in a diet meant for dogs with food allergies? There are both cat and dog prescription diets on their site with both dry matter and grams/kg nutrients.

I really enjoy all your videos! I just recently switched my dog to the Purina Proplan sensitive stomach line. I was feeding one of the Holistic dog foods. I fell into the group that said these foods are so much better because of the ingredients, but I found that this food was way too “rich” for my husky. He was excessively burping and keeping an upset stomach and would eat grass every couple of weeks to make himself sick. I also had to start giving him a Pepcid due to the acid reflux. Anyway, he is doing much better on the Purina. I said all that to say that I would prefer to feed him science diet, but he is allergic to chicken and there are none, other than the prescription diets , that he can have. Do you think Hill’s will ever make a chicken free food?

Hills has gotten pets sick. Just because it expensive doesnt mean its good. I think have a mixture of a diet of dry wet is good for cats.

Your videos are great and would love your opinion on Natural Balance LID diets. My dogs get very bad diarrhea if I feed them anything else. I've tried Hill Science Diet sensitive skin and stomach, PPP SSS, etc,etc, etc....... I'm also very curious about Science Diets new Pollock and insect larvae formula!😳🐛(oh yes there is!) I worked in a Veterinary Clinic for over 19 years and am very torn between the big four and finding something that won't upset my dog's stomachs..... Thank you!

Working for Hills for so many years you would of course you side with the company that supported your salary for almost a lifetime. According to you Hills can do no wrong. How much do you suppose you earned over the years? Probably about 3 Million. But, of course, you are completely unbiased and you can't admit that Hills can be advertisement offensive. What I see in their marketing is that they always seem to have their logo and product right up front in your face when you search dog foods online. This occurs even when you specifically search another company's food. I'm beginning to see the light here. Not to say that they are not the only major corp doing this. I wonder what dog food would cost if they didn't spend so much on advertising. Someone has to pay for that expense, Oh wait, it just gets passed onto the consumer, nothing to see here.

It really shows which companies care about getting involved in research to further nutrition knowledge and conducing proper feeding trials for their diets and which ones solely care about profit. My cat is still doing amazing on T/D and I will continue to give Hill’s my business because it truly helped my cat’s health.

I’m wondering what you would do if you opened a new bag of your dogs food and they were reluctant to eat it, and/or ate it and developed vomiting with or without diarrhea? I’m not insinuating there is anything wrong with any of the brands being named as having something wrong with them. I have not taken my cats off Purina, but I’m aware of the stories. Some stories are very long shot but some are too uncanny to dismiss so I’m just being aware and alert. As a fellow person who isn’t getting all bent out of shape, I was just wondering how you would handle it? I think dogs are less picky than cats
