In 1913, Jose Raul Capablanca visited Russia to play a series of exhibition knock-out matches against his three adversaries. The conditions to win the gold cup presented by Monsieur Savorin were that Capablanca would win it if he did not lose any game of a match against each of the three others. Otherwise, the trophy would be awarded to the opponent with the best score against him. Eugene Aleksandrovich Znosko-Borovsky was declared the winner after he tied his match 1-1 and also won the stakes' side-pot.
The matches lasted between December 12th-23rd, but it doesn't seem to be certain in the stipulations whether any of the matches may have been extended past 2-0, should Capablanca have won each game that would been preceded by Christmas. Perhaps the stakes may have increased if the cup-winner or winner of the side-stakes did have to be decided beyond 6 games, but there does not seem to be any indication of how long the rounds of the cup might hae been scheduled for.

First time in an agadmator's video that I find more than one puzzles! Although the last mate did give me considerable time. At first, I thought something like Rf4 has the solution, but I couldn't find the mate. But after some time, I saw that all f file squares are forbidden for the black king even without the rook, which meant that the rook could actually move to the g file. After that, the solution became obvious. Nice video, I really enjoyed the game. Capablanca's games are always very pleasant to watch.

That alekhine quote makes me think he was studying the wisdom of Kabbalah, of which that quote is the main tenet

I spent an hour trying to find that final mate in three because I figured it was check-check-checkmate and I just could not find anything like that. In every other mate in 3-5 scenario I've come across, it's always been forced checks, so this was a new learning experience for me that it can be check-zugzwang-checkmate. This was the first mate in x that I gave up on. Keep in mind that I only started to go beyond how the pieces move and the few games I've ever played just a couple weeks ago.

I am from Germany, after i "found" chess stuff on the internet a while back i always wondered who this "Alekhine" was and why i had never heared of such a great master before. It took me a few weeks to realize that this is how Americans call Aljechin 8[.

I just read about Tim Krabbe's LONG CASTLE and this move was forbidden the year after he found a chess puzzle about that. Can you mention about it sometimes? I d like to hear your opinion :)
