This will be a review of the Hioki DT4256 multimeter, and I'll introduce the Hioki DT4282. The Hioki DT4256 multimeter is meant for electricians. This Hioki multimeter has a number of features that make it a great meter for electricians. I'll compare it to the Fluke 117 as it is a well known Electricians Multimeter. The title of this video is Hioki DT4256 Multimeter - is it the Best Electrician's Multimeter?.

Nice review, Hioki 425x series looks wayy better than fluke 11x series. Gold plated test probe, silicone cable, etc. Joe smith did transient tests with DT4252 (still the same DT425x series as DT4256) and it survived quite nicely. I got hioki DT4212, turns out it was made by Der-ee (taiwanese), using COB chip most likely very similar (if not the same) chip as Fluke 17B (not 17B+). my DT4212 got problems with capacitance & temperature measurements, however I got it 2nd hand just to try to get my hands on Hioki brand. I guess Hioki learnt their lessons, DT425x & DT428x are properly made in Japan with Hioki main chipset. Some japanese brands like Hioki, Kyoritsu & Yokogawa can be considered a class higher than more commonly available (and cheaper) sanwa DMM.

Thank you for this great feedback! I think Fluke must be looking over their shoulder - but then again I don't see anything really new from them. I did notice that the lower cost series from Hioki had a different exterior design. I do like this DT4256 meter. I've been using it on the bench everyday;)

Thanks for point this out. The mV is auto ranging - so true volt auto-ranging vs having to change setting to mV. I left the screen protector on which I should have taken off. But even on it looks great, but the lights diffuse in the plastic and look not as good in camera. I'll take this off and do a video where I compare meters.

Great review. I've got one of these, which I've used specifically for tube amp resto work. It's fine for that, but it's really a blunt instrument for electronics work. I moved up to an Agilent 34401A, which is almost too fine an instrument, but it's definitely the better tool for my purposes.

I'm enrolling into an Elecrician's training this September, so I'm just about selecting a meter and your videos are super handy, just in time! I used to be obsessed with the Fluke 117, but now what you've shown me with the Hioki just blew my mind! We still have a few months until it's purchase time, so I'll be tuning in to your channel and see if you can beat this meter; but so far I think I'm getting this one! But I'm wondering why no electricians' meters seem to have mA/μA... I saw some brothers of this same meter where they have it, but then the Non-Contact Voltage detection is ditched, which is a pity :( Are these functions mutually exclusive in multimeters?
@KissAnalog

Thanks for your feedback! I do have a couple more meters to review very soon that are also great electricians meters. The one I'm using all the time measures power as well;) Also, in this multimeter format, there is the Testo as well: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h6tdeq-ExMq-eWQ.html. At a lower cost and very nice meter, there's the Klein Tough meter M700; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7qmd5Ohlp3YfHU.html

@@KissAnalog WOW, Thanks for the links! I remember having seen your Testo review last week - and I have to admit, the Testo is the winner for the World's Ugliest Multimeter title - without the rotary knob it looks like an oldschool mobile phone from Star Wars... But the Klein Tools I just watched looks very promising. I have been a Japanologist for the past 10 years, so I'm biased towards the Hioki - I also love it's clean look, it's almost as beautiful as the 117, just with more functionality. Apparently the Klein doesn't have the Non-Cntact Voltage detection, so for me - at the moment - it's the Hioki 4256, but I'll keep watching your videos! :) Thanks for all what you're doing there, it's just awesome! This is exactly what people like me need, looking to buy a meter.

@@KissAnalog This is the day when my Hioki arrived! I had to make up my mind sooner because EU import tariff rates are on the horizon, but fortunately it was not hard to decide. : ) By the way, I have heard people pronounce it /high + okie/, which sounds cool indeed, but in fact it's /he + okie/ (with the word stress on the first syllable). It's named after a small city near Kagoshima, right at the southwestern tip of Japan! : ) And I'm absolutely thrilled with it, I LOVE the auto hold function! Words cannot express how lucky I am to have found your channel!

very nice equipment... 😃 dealing with AC VFD motor drives and fork-truck inverter battery chargers there is a need for multimeters to indicate dirty 5th and 7th harmonics which can cause a big power grid problem. leading to equipment burn out and upset the power-factor. let alone all the solar inverters. thus sometime adding additional filters for clean power.🤔 thanks

Brymen meters are by far the best bang for the buck. You can get a BM869s with the same features as the high end Hioki for under $250. I know Joe Smith has tested them to the limit and the only meters that would hang were Fluke. He wasn't overwhelmed with the Hioki he tested. Even Dave Jones went back to Brymen for his EEV branded BM768. After the issues he had with the 121 GW built by UEI he went back to a winner company with great customer support. Send them an email and they will gladly send you some to test and most likely and let you keep them as they have with Joe. I have 4 of them and they all perform amazing. Keep up with my pristine Fluke 189 with even better features. I love that Brymen meters remember the last settings on meter you set it for when you turn it on the next time. I know your Greenlee is a Brymen rebranded but go for the 869s. Welectron and TME in Poland both sell the Brymens. I got two from Poland in 4 days, faster than I can get shipping from within the US.

Great at electronic design, software design, machine work, engine building, motorcycle drag racing..........I wonder if there is anything he doesn’t do well. I love how he found all the faults with Dave Jones 121GW meter. Dave wasn’t too happy. I see Dave went back to Brymen for his new EEVBlog 768 model to join the venerable BM 235. That UEI built 121 was a disaster.

Sample time (display update) comparison in your summary? I cannot stand slow meters and that's one of the reasons I like meters that aren't auto-ranging since I nearly always know what range I'm trying to measure anyway. They settle faster.

@@KissAnalog thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts, l think quite similarly :) Both meters are similarly priced and both have their Pros and Cons, from my point-of-view: Hioki DT4256: + fast! + familiar „user interface“ since it’s similar to the DT4256 + beautiful, Japanese aesthetic design + Atuo Hold, Rel., two filter settings + has NCV, handy, instead of pulling another meter! - no mA/uA - low capacitance measurement range - display contrast relatively low - no Lead position protection or warning! Testo 760-2: + excellent build quality + nice one hand, button interface + uA Range + high basic accuracy (0.1) + good display (bigger but doesn’t show more than Hioki) + automatic measurements … but - very slow finding the kind of measurement, fast if manually selected (defeats the purpose, kind of) - Simple Hold, no Rel. - - doesn’t read Zero current when not connected or even with Leads shorted … I returned a 760-3 because of this mal-function; I don’t know if it was only this one or a “standard” weakness! So, I’m a bit torn between the two, but I tend towards the Testo because it’s “different” and is 30$ cheaper (in my place), price diff. is not the decisive factor, though :)

I found hoe to defeat this problem. In the off position hold the backlight button on and turn the dial to ac and it on til you shut it off. Not good for battery drain but I use lithium cells like energizer aaa to give the maximum power you need. This Hioki sure is a nice electricians dmm, but it's also expensive. I don't know if comparing it to the fluke 11# series is still relevant as that series is pretty old by now (and, consequently, way overpriced for the functions and quality of display etc). Regarding the price, for $211 you can also get a Brymen bm869s. That is of course not an 'electricians' multimeter, but has similar (and more) features, way more accuracy/resolution etc. However it is a fullsize dmm and not a midsize dmm. So it's the extra functions (logging, 24ma, vfd filter etc) in the smaller (midsize) formfactor that have to justify the premium pricepoint. What I would love to see in your reviews is what you can do with the software and logging functions. Most multimeterreviewers skip this part. Especially if they're Australian, not Austrian... It would make the video even longer, but it could be a seperate video. Logging and software features (graphs etc) could be used professionally if customers ask reports with extensive checkups. Do you have the pc interface? I saw it was an option. Didnt look at the price (actually couldn't find it...) but usually these are expensive options (too expensive as the software is usually also pretty crappy...)

In years to come the younger generation will not even know the name fluke. Mid-tier multimeters aren’t that hard to make and that’s all the majority of techs need and nowadays afford.

I agree, I was also a Fluke guy, but they are so old now and no new Flukes - the competition has passed them IMHO;)
