We will look at the Klein MM700 Tough Meter. It is a digital multimeter meant for electricians and comes with 3rd party safety agency testing, and is a rugged low cost multimeter. I bought this meter at Home Depot, about a year ago after I got tired of the super cheap off brand meters that I always seemed to break by accident. I wanted something that I could use around the house for basic power checks and occasional servicing when some of the electronics around the house need fixing. I also wanted something that I felt was safe enough, and reliable enough to use to help teach my son to safely work around electricity and even simple diagnostics work. I went with Klein because of the name. My Father is an electrician and most of his line tools, back in the day, were Klein. Most of his meters were Fluke or Simpson, but Klein was what he trusted his life with, whether he was working on a Dragline generator, or power pump in the middle of a phosphate mine field. Good review, as always. I really appreciate the explanations and discussions on the ratings and accuracy. It makes a lot more sense to me now when I look at the different ratings.

I have this meter. I originally bought the MM400 for benchwork type stuff, and unfortunately I had to return it to Home Depot 3 months later. I was trying to test capacitance on some capacitors I removed from an XBox I am restoring, and I could NOT for the life of me get it to zero out. I followed all the instructions, changed the batteries, and it would always start creeping up in uF without anything even hooked up. I would hook up a capacitor and it would read OL for every single one of them. I had enough. No matter what I would do, it just kept giving me bad readings. I exchanged it for the MM700 tonight and am VERY glad I did. Not only is this one stable, but the features are exactly what I need. I tested all of the new caps I just received in the mail, and all are registering perfectly. It's nice to know I can diagnose tiny board components as well as re-wire my house with this thing.

Awww, you made me feel special..... I asked about the MM700 and a few days later you give me my wish--LOL-- Seriously, though I do appreciate the review. You let me get a good look at the guts of that thing and I am impressed after seeing some dodgy stuff that some of the other manufacturers have done to reach a lower price point. The lead post mounting looks pretty good, the pcb looks fairly well laid out, decent fuses and easy to replace, and appears to be plenty rugged for my use-case. Thanks. Oh, and I hope you survived that drone attack or whatever it was.... :-)

Nice review! Thank you for your effort to buy these things and show them in detail before us thinking of buying them. That grease on the pcb is a rare sight. I had a few flukes with 4+ years in usage at my workplace which had scratchy or stiff rotary switches, I opened them and applied just a little lithium multipurpose grease on the pcb and on the switch and after that they worked smooth like new. I also recently bought a brand new keysight u1241b which had a very scratchy rotary switch too, but not stiff. I did the same job to it and now it's just a pleasure to operate it. Greetings!

Haha, your outhrows are so funny, the barely concealed curse when something goes wrong, or your expression when something falls:-) Fantastic review -- I've been a Fluke fanboy since about '79, but now, thanks to your review, I am strongly considering one. I had my eye on an ultra-cheep(!) AstroAI TRMS 6000 Counts Digital Multimeter, but now, am not sure what to do. Thanks again for the work you put into this.

I like my FLIR, testo, and Amprobe too much for their better capabilities and displays. I did find a couple low cost, but high count meters that I can’t wait to review;)

The MM700 was my first multimeter and I liked it quite a bit, feels very sturdy and good in the hand. Never really had too much of an issue with it, and for the price it's pretty hard to beat. I did get a fluke 87V recently and I love it a lot, but it's hardly comparable given the price difference.

After have a few of the Fluke meters I’m going over to the Klein MM700. I use my meters every single day as a diesel/transmission,generator mechanic. Anything from 12 volts DC, to 700 volts DC In hybrid transmissions. 120-240 volts AC, resistance, continuity, duty cycles, temperature. I will also use this meter around the house with testing circuits and switches. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for your feedback! I think that is a wise choice. The Klein is safety certified by a 3rd party so it is just as safe as the Fluke and very tough IMHO;)

My old fluke 73 that survived a flood in 96 just got melted on an exhaust header. As I am no longer a professional I didn't want to spring for another fluke. After watching this review I took a chance and ordered the Klein. Thanks

Sorry to see old good equipment damaged beyond use. But, I think you will be happy with the Klein. It will still melt, but is just as rugged as the 73;)

Those through hole glass tubes I suppose some GDT (gas discharge tube), similar idea to MOVs in flukes but with less capacitance, dunno about rated voltage. Japanese multimeter do use GDT quite extensively among their product line, I've seen some bench multimeter do use GDT as well instead of MOVs. GDT will withstand repeated overload as MOVs will degrade over time as they're being overloaded. Main IC looks like dreamtech series? coupled with TI MSP430 series like flukes, not sure why they'd do that as dreamtech chip is usually an all-in-one DMM chip. Grease supposedly a specific dielectric grease, but they probably simply use any silicon grease available; that grease will smooth out those selector dial movement very nicely. Some Klein Tools DMMs (if not all) are made in Korea by Finest. Test probes looks very similar to the one made by Appa tech (Taiwanese DMM manufacturer), I got one for Appa 505, pretty nice cable, mine got grey plastic for the triangular serrated thumb grip. Love the review.

I just bought this multimeter today from Home Depot. I set it up and…..it’s dead on arrival. Now have to go back and return it. ordered a Fluke 17B+ Instead. Hoping it’s the last multimeter I ever have to buy.

The worst part is. I bought the Klein MM700 to Replace a Klein MM500 that died on me yesterday! It lasted 7 years, but a damn shame adding some more e-waste to the world. Thanks for the reply and tip on the leads. I will check out that video. Cheers

Thanks Ronnie - I have to agree with you. It also has a nice rugged feel in the hand. I think Klein is doing a nice job! Here in the states I see them for sale in Home Depot - so I think Home Depot made a great decision choosing a safe but reasonably priced meter for the professionals and DIY:)

@@KissAnalog The MM720 features a high visibility, reverse contrast LCD display with an "optical sensor" to automatically optimize viewability in dark or bright ambient lighting, basically a better viewing screen that will self adjust to lighting.

Hey Eddie, I really liked the video, I liked how you went through the ratings and the accuracy... Don’t you think it’s kinda strange that it reminds you to check the leads at the current settings when in real live you could really hurt yourself if you tried measuring voltage when the leads are in the current ports?.... plastics look good! Input protection is present! HRC fuses👌....spark gaps? Not gunna see that on the fluke....the bridge wire I would think is from the way that they orient the fuses on the Pcb, they likely had that as a design constraint and started laying it out from there👍...the last thing I’ll mention is the greebling, I personally don’t want my meter to look like a starship replica like some of the really cheap meters, this one is on the edge but that pcb makes up for it!

Great review. I just received my Klein MM 600 today Saturday 9-18-2021. I haven't used a multimeter in years. I might use it tomorrow or Monday. My old meters display started action up, only used it once or twice a year. I haven’t used this meter yet and already want to upgrade to the MM700? Thanks for the great video. Can you test the accuracy of the meters over varying battery voltage levels? Since you have so many meters! I have a super cheap meter ( yes, I am going to upgrade) but I was really hoping you could test the multimeter accuracy when powered by a bench power supply at varying voltages. I've dealt with issues where the accuracy of my multimeter changes with it's battery voltage and I never want to deal with that again. The biggest problem is my cheap meter doesn't have a low battery warning so I never know when the accuracy drifts :(

Great video thanks for your thorough review. I have chosen the MM700 over the fluke 117. Yes the accuracy and count isn't quite as good as the 117 there but it packs in a few other features to level the playing field I. E better back light, comes with good leads/case, 1/2 the price, ma/ua functions. I tend to think I'm paying for the brand name with fluke! Why doesn't the 117 have auto sensing AC/DC on its high impedance setting? Ridiculous. To others reading this, which would you buy?

Thanks for the great feedback! I agree, I like the M700 better even if they were the same price. I like the rugged feel and better display. And you can feel safe with the 3rd party safety test and IP rating that the yellow meter doesn’t have;)

I really like the Klein and Ideal meters as alternatives to Fluke meters. Have you ever looked at (tested/reviewed) the Klien MM400 or any of the Ideal Meters... especially the Ideal 60-347 which I just picked instead of the Fluke 115 or 117? I believe Klein & Ideal are comparable but I'm a wildlife biologist not an electrical engineer, and have so much to learn with this stuff. So I appreciate your channel. All my best Eddie...

I bought the MM700 and had a problem with voltage auto-ranging. All voltage: AC, DC and range is on one setting which would be cool if it worked. It kept erroneously giving me zero volts on 48v circuits and caused hours and hours of wasted time wrenching and isolating and looking for a short or open in the circuit. After I noticed the same exact issue on another known good circuit I got suspicious and it turns out that I had to manually push range while engaged in the circuit in order to see a voltage reading. You don't expect your problem to be the dang meter! I'm not sure if mine was defective or if I needed to do something to set it up to work correctly but it was a dud for me. Luckily I was within 90 days and Home Depot let me return it. I even explained to them what the problem was and that I wasn't sure if I'm doing something wrong but they have no idea how to troubleshoot things so they just refunded it. Too bad. I liked the idea of no fuss autoranging but it didn't meet my expectations. The backlight was really nice though as sometimes I'm tinkering on things until it gets dark.

Would this be a good multimeter for a beginner working on electronics? Is it possible to make it default to DC rather than AC? That is the only thing I don't like about it. Is this common?

I think this is a great meter for the beginner. It is so robust and easy to use. That's a great question, I'll have to look into it but the default is probably AC as they probably think it is going to be an attractive meter for the electrician.

I may be asking the wrong question on the wrong video. Still I would like to know what all the multimeter options available, if my only priority is the accuracy of AC RMS voltage reading for any frequency?

If your meter meter would have unlimited bandwidth, then it most likely will pick up hf noise to, seen 11mhz flukes, but they also have highpass filter option.. whoops meant lowpas

Thinking of taking an Electrician class as a hobby and backup trade. Would this be a good Multimeter for a student/apprentice, (less chance of wondering off than a more expensive Fluke) ?...or should I just go with a Fluke 117?

Great Question! No - the 117 is popular by name - not by function and value IMHO - get the Klein MM700 (there's a reason HomeDepot carries it) and you will save money and be happier. They have a new Klein MM720. They must be more different than just the specs as size and weight are different. The new MM720 is larger but weight is less at 10.63 x 5.87 x 3.73 inches; 12.17 Ounces. The MM700 is 9.9 x 5.7 x 2.7 inches, 14.4 ounces.

Wow this looks great! Klein makes a durable safe meter - I think that's why Home Depot chose them to sell. I'll have to pick one up - when I can afford another meter;) Been a tough year... The display is black and has a sensor to adjust the screen for the level of light in the room. Sounds interesting, and the accuracy is supposed to be improved. I don't have that particular model of multimeter but own klein cl 320,cl 200,mm 2,000 and the cl 440 is on its way they like Ideal and southwire make great meters good demo and talk about that particular model multimeter/ my local home depot store and electrical supply house and Ace carry klein and accessories are good tools as well as multimeters.

when I put my Klein MM420 to mA and select DC it doesn't zero out it just keeps counting is this normal? or is something broken.

Great question! I think this is normal. Especially in mA mode, it is looking for the smallest of readings so it jumps around. Just short the leads and verify it stops jumping and goes to zero.

Klein is putting out some good meters lately I have the cl 440 and 390 and are good clamp meters.

Deep breath,,,, deep breath!!! Anyway looks like a nice meter. The one thing the gives me the willies was seeing the jumper wire to the shunt. I would like to see how this meter would stand up to Joe Smith's tests.

Thank you! I’ll bet it would do great! Plenty of isolation and the current readings with that wire going to the left separates the voltage reading input path. It looks funny but think of it like this; the wire can carry more current then a large trace and the insulation is far better then the masking on the board. So, I thought it was a great way to Otto use an isolated stage versus the compact input area getting crowded. Also those arc suppressors are crowbar devices versus clamping devices such as MOVs. Also remember, Joe admits he is not testing to standards. He’s awesome - much more knowledgeable then most anyone else out there testing multimeters. I actually designed surgery suppression for Square D for 6 years. But I haven’t seen those particular arc suppressors. Who’s heard of a meter dying from an arc? They (Fluke) had trouble with measuring train tracks with the noise and transients they cause, so this was the big driving force to harden multimeters.

Strange ending but anyways, Klein makes great tools. Been using their tools for years. For the price this is a great meter. How does this meter stack up vs your Amprobe meter? I really like Amprobe. To me they are what Fluke should strive to be.

A pity it only has 4000 counts... also can't say I care much for that jump wire running to the shunt.. otherwise looks like a pretty solid DMM.

Look at it this way, the wire most likely can carry more current than a large trace, and the insulation on the wire is far better dielectric then the masking on the board. So, it is a great way to keep the input area from being so compact.

I should have mentioned that the gauge looks adequate, that's not my problem with it personally - however - what if something happens to the wire when the unit is being taken apart - yes I know that's something most wouldn't probably ever have to do and maybe I am nit-picking here. But, wire has a unique way of getting caught up or tangled in stuff - suppose that wire gets yanked on when pulled apart or cinched when put back together. Yes that can be easily fixed - but that is assuming of course it's noticed when damage happens. Just a thought and quite frankly I am a firm believer in Murphy's Law.

Great question Boyd! I think they are doing what Fluke is doing with some of their meters, and they are being made in their factories in China. But unlike Fluke, I don't think they make any specific for countries outside of the US like Fluke does which they seem to avoid getting safety agency testing on. Klein meters all have safety agency testing - at least the ones that I've seen. I think this is one reason that Home Depot chose them for their stores. But - who knows;)

Thanks! I agree, after spending over $200 or even $400, they should provide their best test leads. The newer leads are so stiff! Then if there is an upgrade option with the nicer leads - the price goes up the amount that you can buy the leads separately - but then you lose out on the crappy stiff leads;) I think they get away with it because of their loyal following…too bad! If you are a pro, buy Fluke as your life depends on it specially if you deal with high voltage above 270 volts. Fluke lasts a life time and they even replaced my 114 for free when I dropped it from 20 feet. You get free calibration too. There is a reason it's priced higher.

@ZZ Thanks for the feedback! So, the Fluke 114 is made in China and only has two terminals and is also only has a CAT III rating. How do you get free calibration? It doesn't come with the unit from China with a calibration. I've worked at companies that buy lots of Fluke meters, but I've never heard of a free calibration. The Klein has better ratings and is just as safe as it has the same safety certifications. Also the Amprobe is a better choice with better safety ratings and owned by the same company that owns Fluke. There are a number of better options than Fluke that cost less and are just as safe - and even built better IMHO of course;)

If your a professional electrician or service technician do not buy this Klein mm700 meter! This is by far the worst meter I’ve ever used, the leads are terrible. The biggest problem is the delay we’re talking 4-5seconds for an AC voltage reading on auto range, and 2-3 seconds on manual range. To get a stable resistance reading we’re taking have a sip of coffee delay! For a hobbyist this is probably not an issue (if your pining out surface mount components on a modern circuit board it sure would be!). When you have to check 100s of circuits and time is money this is painful! I bought on of these on a Sunday service call at the Home Depot as I forgot my Fluke meter at the shop. Klein makes decent quality electrical tools but they should be ashamed to put there name on this meter. If you don’t care about the delay and your willing to buy a quality set of leads it’s probably ok for you. Personally I’d recommend spending a few hundred bucks more for a Fluke meter (I have the Fluke 87) you won’t regret it!

Thanks but I have to disagree. You must have got a bad meter. My MM700 is just as fast as my 87V in reading AC voltage. I think some people have a nature bias towards what they like and see issues with anything else. For example, the TL75 leads that come with the 87V these days is the worst in the industry IMHO. The Klein leads are more flexible and better in every way - again IMHO. Also you can buy some really nice silicone leads and still save hundreds over buying the 87V. Also, for anyone working outdoors, the MM700 has a great IP rating so will be protected from the elements. The 87V does not, you will have to get the 87 Max that they came out with.
