Most people with have been led to believe that stretching is the best exercise to treat hip bursitis.
But it’s not...
And that rolling on a tennis ball will somehow loosen things up and help things heal.
But it won’t...
In fact, it can keep people from healing.
Think of it like this- imagine you have a bruise somewhere else in your body. And every hour you poke, pull, and pay someone to dig at it.
Would you expect it to heal? (I’ll let you answer)
It hurts so good while you’re doing it... but it still hurts. And any amount of hurt you’re doing by stretching it or mashing it with a tennis or lacrosse ball won’t be enough to bring about any good.
Instead as you do these recommended treatments you will continue to “Knick the scab” and prevent your body and hip (or whatever it is) from healing.
So, step 1- stop stretching.
Another thing- it doesn’t make logical sense for most people to stretch anyways. In my experience-most people who have true hip bursitis are already very flexible…
And this is why stretching something that doesn’t need to be stretched doesn’t work and only makes things worse.
Try to figure 4 stretch test -does your painful side move more than your painfree side?? If so, you’re not tight. And really, you’re overstretched or “loose.”
Does your painful side move equal to your pain free side? If so, and you have the same motion on either side, then why don’t you have pain on both sides? It just doesn’t make sense…
Or, does your painful side move less than you were pain-free side? If so you may actually have some tightness on that side. The hypothesis of I am tight, need more motion, and should stretch- seems to make sense. Problem is - the more you stretch the better you should feel. For some-this may be the result… But for most, stretching something that is tight and painful just makes it feel more tight and painful. Like taking a rope with a knot in the middle and pulling harder and harder thinking that eventually the knot will somehow untie itself.
So, consider that if you’ve been told to stretch because your hip feels tight- that it may not actually be tight, and stretching more may actually become the thing that keeps you from healing.
Make sense?

Thank you so much! This is exactly the problem I've been having for the past three years. I realized that stretching just made my hip bursitis worse, and so I stopped, and was pain free more or less. When I start stretching again, because it's what my physical therapist had advised, the pain/discomfort returns immediately. I really needed to hear this today, Thanks again for the confirmation.

This is complexly simple. I have diagnosed with labrum-bursitis and don't believe I needed surgery at my age. For the first 3 months I was stretching and not seeing improvements. Finally, I decided to do nothing for a solid month and work on core/hip strengthening. I went back to running modifying my cadence/stride and strike and its all bueno!
@jsherzog
@jsherzog 3 жыл бұрын
Update 2 months later* I am running 5 months since "minor tear". Fully back to normal and regaining great fitness. Longest 20 miler with 2500k elevation followed by a 10 miler the next day... doing great! Strengthen the glutes- do abduction.. forefoot strike and pick up cadence!! No Physio needed to pay thousands. The key is STOP exercising for a solid 4-6 weeks(I know it's hard...) If you have an FAI this will not help(sorry) but if it's minor and Almost everyone suffers trauma to their labrum then try this first.

I can't sit down without being in pain and when I do I can barely lift either leg up let alone cross them over. Sometimes the slightest movement will set of a spasm down my lower back, hip and thigh (pain is in my left side). In the past I've found acupuncture to be the best cure. @drcharliejohnson
@drcharliejohnson 3 жыл бұрын
02 Explorer. The first part of the solution is to SUBTRACT the negative stressors- in this case stretching (for most people). For some reason, people have been led to believe that they need to ADD or DO something to solve this problem. Sure, this can work. But I've learned that it is often the subtraction of things that DO NOT work or that aggravate the condition that sets the stage for healing. Don't underestimate the power in this. The first step is to REMOVE that which you've been doing to solve it- leaving you with clarity about how to proceed on the other end.

There is increased T2 signal and attenuation of the gluteus medium without full thickness tear or retraction with increased burial fluid. It is T bursitis or Tear? What would u recommend? I stop all kinda work out , and it feels a little better. Do I have a chance to heal completely? I am only 46 female, and I would like to enjoy my life with out pain and work out again.

You can also have pain from weak muscles/joints as well, not just from tightness. If the range of motion is there, or your hip joint is "loose", and hurts, it could be from muscles in that region being weak or hypotrophic.

here's something i've been doing that might be related to this guy's message: i had a prior injury that set me up for lifelong weakness on my right side (along with bursitis) + (and kind of loose feeling) and strength on my left side (and kind of tight). so i finally applied some logic and started completely ignoring stretching on the right side. in addition, i do all the strengthening exercises, and i always do an extra set on the right side. i'll report back to let y'all know if it works, but it seems to make sense--stretch the tight and strong side, and do extra strength reps on the weak side--with no stretching.

Ive found what has helped me, i had a few weeks of no lower body exercises or stretching. Then slowly added in light stretching, walking more and have been consuming Omega 3&6 + Turmeric. I just started looking into these videos tonight as I've been experiencing pain from both hip areas for about two weeks. There seems to be two or three spots on each side that emit pain or discomfort. My doctor prescribed PredniSONE for five days on my 63td birthday a couple of days ago to give you my age. I had a serious case of ciatica about 16 years ago and I'm just wondering whether I'm re-experiencing those nerves again since one symptom is a hot foot on occasion? Will ice or heat gels make a difference in helping it heal until I know the true causation?

Been a pretty serious cyclist most of my life. Pretty sure my psoas and quads are just overdeveloped causing muscular imbalance. Yup I have back pain, been operated on for FAI, been told I have a pelvic tilt. I'm SUPER flexible as it is. Leg cross test is symmetrical with both knees easily hitting horizontal. Stretching has only made things worse leading up to my FAI surgery. Maybe if I spent the same amount of time I've spent on the bike doing glute/ham work it might balance out. Here is a note... I lack the strength/mobility required to squat to 90 degrees with any amount of weight. I'm lucky if o can squat to 70. Practicing squats or deadlifts is a bad time for me so trying to figure out other ways to strengthen the glutes and work on that mobility. I used to do a lot of yoga since everyone says it's good for you, but feel less pain after quitting.

raw stretch your hips flexors by lunging into a thick resistance band. Then look up Bret Conterras Glute Lab. You need to strengthen the glutes while not using the hip flexors or quads. His program is for runway models who need to develop the glutes but not grow the legs. It consequently improved a lot of people's hips and backs. Electro-neuromuscular re-education may also help. Also get some new stable shoes... something firm not squishy. I'm looking into a podiatrist consultation next.

Honestly want to know if you're making an assumption because you've been led to believe stretching is needed/good/and prevents injury (which it does not) or if its something you have actually tested and found to be true?! If "they" are now calling it trochanteric pain syndrome, then "they" probably know that the term bursitis is somewhat of a misdiagnosis, or at least doesn't fully explain what's going on--cuz what is causing the inflammation of the bursa in the first place--which in turn would cast a lot of doubt on the usual treatments. also, i'm wondering if stretching in general kind of weakens you; not just before a workout, but all the way around. and if part of the problem is weakness, then stretching wouldn't necessarily help. but i have to admit that after exercising, stretching feels good, at least for a bit. i'd like to know the difference between myofacial release and stretching of muscle fibers.

Hey Bridget! thanks for watching. Step one to resolving any pain problem is to stop picking the scab... meaning- stop stretching and massaging the painful area. This IS part of the solution. Don't mistake the absence of doing things as not doing anything! Let me know if you're interested in some more help and would like me to review your case personally to see if I may be able to help you. Hang in there and Happy New Year!

Hi, i have been diagnosed with hip bursitis in one of my posterior bursa via ultrasound (so i assume its a correct diagnosis). I am now going to stop stretching the area, what else should i do/not do to try and get back to playing football faster. Its been 4 months of misdiagnosis and a lot of stretching to get no where.

Hey Owen, thanks for watching! Appreciate your support. Honestly, tough to give specific advice provided what you have above. That being said, I'd love to see if/how I can help. The best first step is to chat (if you're open to it) so I can ask some clarifying questions and we can develop a possible plan. If you're interested and serious about solving this problem, you can set up a free call with me by visiting www.calldrc.com and selecting a time that works best for you.

This video is really misleading for a few reasons. Yes, the test you do shows whether the piriformis is over stretched but it doesn’t address other hip muscles that could easily be contributing to being tight. It doesn’t mention anything about hamstrings or hip flexors. All the video says it to stop stretching which for some who watch this video will be detrimental. Also, if you fail the test given, you give 0 advice. If a muscle is too loose, strengthening can be a good solution for those wondering
@drcharliejohnson
@drcharliejohnson 3 жыл бұрын
Stephen, first off, thanks for watching and providing feedback. Second, what type of work do you do... I'm assuming you're somehow connected to the medical field?! Anyways... a few things. 1- Video is not misleading- it's pretty straightforward actually. Check hip motion- if not truly tight then stop stretching it. Or, even a simpler concept- if you've been stretching and it hasn't worked- STOP. Am I missing something? Sure, are there other muscles and structures around the hip that restrict other planes of motion?!- Absolutely as you mentioned. That wasn't the point of the video. I showed one motion, which represents a good quick snapshot of hip mobility (NOT just piriformis) but hip joint capsule, many other hip muscles, the central nervous systems ability to allow the hip to move into the position, lumbar spine mobility and so on... that's all. Consider that "more" or more complex reasoning will lead to a better understanding/result. (occam's razor) Also, how do you consider stopping stretching to be a detriment ANY more than continuing to stretch? What's the logic? Finally, if you fail the test- a large part of the solution is to STOP stretching. MOST people ADD stretching to their routine as a way to solve this issue- doing it because they have been instructed to or led to believe that it's THE solution. As I mentioned above in a previous reply... "The first part of the solution is to SUBTRACT the negative stressors- in this case stretching (for most people). For some reason, people have been led to believe that they need to ADD or DO something to solve this problem. Sure, this can work. But I've learned that it is often the subtraction of things that DO NOT work or that aggravate the condition that sets the stage for healing. Don't underestimate the power in this. The first step is to REMOVE that which you've been doing to solve it- leaving you with clarity about how to proceed on the other end." Thanks again! Charlie

@@tsiyoy its based off my experience. Have you tried stretching and has it worked? If so, great. I'm guessing not if you're still searching for answers. Also, a fatal flaw that most people make- is they see the absence of something (not stretching) as not doing anything. When in fact, it could be the thing that's keeping you from healing. Good luck.
