One of the reasons Page's solos always seem to cut through was he was treble boosting before treble boost pedals were even a thing...he did it by switching his wah pedal on and leaving it fully on rather than rocking it back and forth as players like Clapton would. The man was a sonic genius and his studio knowledge definitely paid off

In the first album, Page had pretty much put together the entire album in his head before he formed the band. Based on black American blues and songs left over from when he was in The Yardbirds. Second album is a scorcher. It was in Zep III that Plant starts to carry the load of being the lyricist for the band, and since he was an avid reader of mythology, medieval history and Tolkien, you begin to get more fantasy references. Zeppelin also starts drawing more on the folk genre for inspiration…..Robert was (and still is) very tuned in to the British folk scene.

I can't quit you - the way that Page's guitar is almost doing a vocal duet with Plant it's so expressive - great the way you wring as much meaning as you can from it and the technique - arghhhhhr !

Another reason, amongst the many, that Zeppelin's production values are amazing is that this album was the first album to be sold only in a stereo format. Up until then most albums were sold in mono or stereo not just stereo. Obviously Zeppelin wanted the best user experience possible.

You nailed it about Page! He actually uses clean tones but very trebly and a little thin to create contrast against the heavy rhythm section. You hear this again in the Whole Lotta Love solo. He did lots of cool, clever stuff: cocking the wah pedal in the treble position (one commenter noted) and playing through a rotating Leslie speaker to sound like a trebly organ - that’s the sound of the Good Times Bad Times solo. He also did lots of double and triple tracking for depth and also for harmonies. Page’s creativity in terms of sound, composition and production was totally unbounded. Page also does a lot of original changes to standard blues. In I Can’t Quit You Baby, he does that A to Bflat turnaround that was cool. Hope you feel better!! Regarding voices... One of the things that caused Plant's abilities to click with Page was that at 19, it was said Plant almost didn't need a microphone. He had THAT much projection and range. I think the general consensus is that Plant retained this power in live shows probably to the halfway point of the touring for the Houses of the Holy album in 1973. The concert film The Song Remains the Same was recorded towards the end of that tour and THAT voice is no where near what you hear on the 1970 Albert Hall set as a comparison. I think he retained the ability to get the "early Plant" intensity on records through parts of Physical Graffiti but that becomes a fuzzy distinction cuz that's a double-LP of material recorded from the HOTH sessions through part of 1975 so some of the recordings pre-date when he may have blown his voice on the HOTH tour. In a similar vein, you can hear the same thing with Steve Perry's voice. After he joined Journey and they recorded Infinity, Evolution, Departure, Captured (live LP of Captured Tour) then Escape, Perry had "the voice" from Infinity through Captured. His voice on Escape was a bit raspier but at the time most thought it was due to Escape having more hard rock songs on it (besides the ballads) and he was choosing to sing that way. However, Escape was SO successful as an LP, they apparently didn't turn down any dates and by the time they recorded the next album after probably 18 months of touring, Perry seemed to have blown his vocal cords. The sound on "Separate Ways" for example was nowhere close to the earlier stuff. You can't ask singers to deliver at this level for MONTHS straight without jeopardizing the gift permanently.

"I Can't Quit You Baby" is blues song written by Willie Dixon and first recorded by Chicago blues artist Otis Rush in 1956. It is a slow twelve-bar blues ensemble piece, with lyrics about the consequences of an adulterous relationship which is difficult to end. "I Can't Quit You Baby" was Rush's first recording and Cobra Records's debut single. It became a record chart hit as well as a blues standard. Rush updated the song in 1966 with a modified arrangement, which was adapted by Led Zeppelin for their 1969 debut album.

Just revisited this reaction of yours and just brilliant man. Really makes us realise how advanced even the actual sound and recording was let alone the musicanship for guys barely in the their 20:s and in the late 1960's. Regardless the music stands without knowing any of these things - that's why it's great.

It's complete and utter BS that some people think that Plant's voice is only at its peak for the first 2 or 3 albums. That would be saying that LZ 4 is under par??!! Is Stairway or Going to California, or Battle for Evermore, or really any track on 4 under par?? Or on the next album, Houses of the Holy, is Song Remains the Same, or Rain Song, or No Quarter under par vocally??!! Or on Physical Graffiti, is Kashmir or In The Light, or any of the other tracks under par vocally??? The answer is beyond any argument, definitively NO. Sure, on the first album he was young and full of energy and power, and yes his voice evolved and matured after that. Now beyond the first 6 albums, into Presence and In Through the Out Door, his voice did falter a bit. But Plant worked through it due to his incredible musical knowledge and ability. And it's still brilliant.

They started with blues tropes of the "evil woman", cheating, heartbreak, etc. because that is what was immediately accessible. However, as they began to mesh their musical skills, their style would evolve yet always still sound like Led Zeppelin; they never lost their identity. Communication Breakdown sounds proto-punk to me. I Can't Quit You Baby was originally written by Willie Dixon and recorded by Otis Rush about an affair Rush was in at the time. One of the many things I enjoy about Jimmy's playing is the "voice" he gets out of the guitar is no less important than the actual vocals - outstanding.

Those 2 songs are absolute electric blues *gold*, & the best two songs on the album, IMO. Plus, there's essentially no gap between them on the album. Since "How Many More Times" is the last track on the album, you might consider pairing the studio track with the live performance "How Many More Times (Danmarks Radio 1969)" - it's an incredible performance!

Gotta think, there was nothing like this going on. Many other stars didn't really care for it . Most said it was too heavy. Cream is running on empty, Hendrix just started coming up, and Sabbath was still a bar band. This Album is a great part of rock history

Your analyses are still perceptive and incisive as we've become accustomed to, so kudos, and welcome back, brother. I believe Page was still using primarily the Yardbirds-era Telecaster here, with it's signature bite, before switching to the meatier Les Pauls with which he's most often associated, no clue when exactly that transition took place. Live performances from this era are with the Tele too. Always leaned toward Strats, myself...the Jimi influence, primarily, but if I found a Tele with a Bigsby (tremolo arm) at a decent price, I'd be all over it. A late friend offered me one once, then said he'd remove and hold onto the Bigsby, which scotched the deal. Oh well. Just bought an Epiphone SG with P-90s and a Bigsby, so I'm content for now. ttyl8r, cheers.

Each one of them is like a souped-up Chelby Cobra, muscled up and out muscling everything in sight. Page with those blistering, searing licks, Plant with the screams of a Banshee, and Bonham pounding with the hammer of the gods. Nothing like them.

You're quite right in I Can't Quit You Baby being made to do live. There is a pro-shot and recorded live version from 1970 at the Royal Albert Hall which is a stunning display in how confident and talented these guys were when they were just kids! Cheers.

Page wrote most of the lyrics on this album, Plant became much more involved on the second album. This is why the fantasy themes were missing on the first album.

Great reaction, so many things to be said about these songs and that first album in general. I can't remember if that song, babe I'm going to leave you, is on here. I thought it was. Absolutely phenomenal song that's mostly acoustic but it really shows off plants voice at the time. But yeah everything on all these is clicking and one thing you didn't point out. This preceded what I think of as really sloppy hard origins of punk by really only about maybe five years. And I can hear it all over it. Especially in Communications breakdown. All those barcodes that are sloppy with the intense energy. But I hear it a little bit even though the very bluesy second one. If you notice there's that repeating Barker drift where it goes up a half a step and then back down a couple times in a row. As bluesy as this is, that was in a reduction to a direction that a lot of punk music would go in later.

I think Communication Breakdown sounds like punk before punk was a thing. It's that driving rhythm.

On "I Can't Quit you Baby" the effect is known as "Tape Delay" or "Slap Back Echo" and is used in a lot of rock a billy and blues music for guitars and John Lennon used it on most of his vocals.

This album was a rush job at the time and was put together in a hurry so Page could meet contract requirements .These are mainly blues tracks with the Led Zep twist

Part of the charm of the song is they actually play parts of it just a little bit sloppy which gives it an authentic feel.

Communication breakdown is proto metal and punk! And Jimmy Page did the producing and mixing John Paul Jones didn't that's why Jimmy Page was a triple threat!

It's somewhat ironic that by their end Zeppelin had come to represent the worst aspects and excesses of the 70s rock dinosaurs. Punk came along in 76/77 and made them redundant practically overnight. And yet, here they are at their very beginning with Communication Breakdown and they what do they sound like? A feral punk band! That opening riff could easily have been on the first Damned album, listen to their song New Rose (the first punk single to be released in the UK) and you'll see exactly what I mean.
