The singer is Greg Allman. He also wrote the song when he was 21 years old.

This band had two drummers. They traversed the blues, jazz, rock and soul to produce their unique sound. Bill Graham of the Fillmore East and West, one of the foremost music promoters, called this band one of his favorites. Their music holds up so well, and has for over fifty years. As usual, intelligent, thought provoking reaction.

The two things that make this song so quintessential... 1) The main 12/8 riff with the bass and drums seems to perfectly capture the paranoia of someone who thinks the whole world is collapsing down upon them... As they actually realize it is all their own doing. 2) Even though Gregg Almann was only 21 at the time, he had that perfect world-weary voice that sounded like a fifty year old...Much more experienced beyond his years. If you want another example of this, search for "Come and Go Blues Gregg Allman"on KZfaq and watch the clip from Allman Brothers on MV. Just him playing acoustic while rehearsing a TV appearance. And by the way, Gregg was no slouch on guitar either.

That's Gregg Allman singing, also on Hammond organ. I read that this song came to him while sleeping; he woke up and wrote the lyrics on an ironing board with a burnt matchstick (didn't have paper or pen).

Their version from Live At The Fillmore East kills this recorded version. I had the great pleasure of seeing these guys 4 times, 3 times before Duane died. They were one of if not the most exciting live band I ever saw, and I've seen perhaps 1000 live acts in my life. RIP Berry, Butch, Duane, and Gregg.

ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, "WHIPPING POST". Fantastic reaction for one of the truly great Bands of 60'S and 7O'S. Greg Allman sang this, with his gruff, Soulful voice while playing the Organ. Duane Allman, and Dickie Betts dueling guitars shared in the solos. Yes along with Skynnyrd, they lead the Southern Rock sound. Less let's not forget about such other great gems. Like, Black Foot, The Outlaws, Molly Hatchett, Marshall Tucker BAND, Charlie Daniel's BAND.

One of the greatest bands of the era - two fantastic guitarists (Duane Allman & Dickey Betts - dueling it out) and the brilliant voice of Greg Allman supported by a rhythm section solid as a flatbed truck! Check out more - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, One Way Out, Blue Sky, Statesboro Blues, Melissa…

Thanks for mentioning Blue Sky.......I often forget to include that among my favorites of theirs. Actually, though I was never as into them in their later albums after Duane and Berry died, I just tell everyone that at least in the first four albums, every song was a masterpiece in it's own right.

Greg Allman is the Keyboards and main vocals, while brother Duane, is the slide guitar. The others in the band are top shelf Blues musicians as well. Dickie Betts is one the greats on guitar, along with Duane Allman. This Band is the greatest Blues Band ever in my opinion. So much soul.

If you are enjoying southern rock, and the Allman Brothers… I suggest a documentary called “Muscle Shoals”. Duane Allman got his start playing as a session musician for the legendary Fame studio in Muscle Shoals (middle of nowhere) Alabama. Several legends in soul and blues got their start there, and the session musicians there had a huge impact on the music of the 60s and 70s. So you had huge bands like The Rolling Stones traveling to a small town in the middle of nowhere because they wanted to get that sound for their record. It’s worth a watch, just to get the sense of how the music of the time was shaped.

The early works of the Allman Brothers are songs that are best listened to live. I highly recommend their Live at the Fillmore album--a longer version of Whipping Post, a killer instrumentwsl, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, The Statesboro Blues, Stormy Monday, Done Somebody Wrong...all killer tracks. From the studio...Ain't Wasting Time No More, Blue Sky, Melissa, Ramblin' Man, Wasted Words, Midnight Rider. Bass - Barry Oakley, Lead guitars - Duane Allman (also slide guitar) and Dicky Betts (vocals also), Drums - Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny "Jamie" Johanson, Keyboard, vocals, songwriting Gregg Allman

Great reaction. This is my first time watching your channel. I'll be checking out some of your Led Zep reactions soon as they're my all time favourite band. I hope you'll consider reacting to a band which over the last 1.5 years has become my 2nd favourite all time band. This may seem weird but here goes. 5 Japanese females dressed as maids shredding hard rock (and other genres). The name of the band is Bandmaid. They came to my attention via the KZfaq algorithm. I wouldn't listen to them at first as I thought it was a joke type band. For some reason the YT algorithm recommended them again a week later and I decided to give them a chance. Glad I did. Their MV's are good, but their live performances are even better. I recommend you start with Domination, Freedom or Play from their 2020 World Domination Tour. Over 100 more to choose from after that. Cheers from Canada

Sayed if you chose to take this journey down south you have to look into Stevie Ray Vaughn. Watch his videos along with your reviews to really appreciate the greatness he possessed. Tragically he was killed in a helicopter crash at the age of 35. He was a huge Jimi Hendrix fan and covered some of his songs. His version of Voo Doo child and Little Wing are brilliant.

These guys are way too talented and diverse in their influences to be lumped with other southern rock bands. They were from the south, played the blues and later added a but more country twang to their style. Their first incarnation, before the deaths, was as a blues/jazz rock band that happened to be from the south. I love the final chorus. The band is hammering away and it's like a contest to be heard between them and the vocalist that Greg wins.

having been an older teen when the band came on the scene and having seen them play a number of times around Atlanta Ga, they are probably my overall favorite band. The first three albums which ended with the tie for first place live album..Live at the Fillmore East, featured all the original members. Eat a Peach, their fourth album was actually released after guitarist Duane Allmans death in a motorcycle crash and I recall it was only a year or so later their bassist and sometime vocalist Berry Oakley died in a similar accident near where Duane died. Although they still put out some good music later on and were very popular, I felt the heart got ripped out of that band and it was never the same for me again. Gregg Allman went on with his fantastic voice and Dicky Betts continued to show what a phenomenal guitarist he is. Every song on their first four albums is a masterful hit IMHO. Some..but not all...of my favorites are Not My Cross to Bear (just listen to the phenomenal timing of Duane's guitar notes on this song)..Hoochie Coochie Man (spotlights bassist Berry Oakley's vocals) One Way Out (highlights a fantastic solo by Dicky Betts) and Statesboro Blues...and all around drivin jammer of a song. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (highlights the two guitarists harmonizing...amazing..as well as it is a softer sweeter song from them)

a lot of people are going to recommend "live at the Filmore" but i got to be honest , although a fine album, not thier best version of themselves. They are still quite young and would improve, and the replacements that would later come with Derrick Trucks and Warren Haynes were well versed at slide guitar and i think even better all around guitarists even though Duane was great and paved the way.
