Today we test out the N20 capsule slugs. Last week we asked our viewers to give us some ideas what to shoot these at. Some suggestions were optimistic - requiring high precision to hit. I think you will enjoy seeing this test.

Your complaints about the heat remind me of one of the few things I accomplished as a department firearms instructor. I got them to quit trying to qualify in July. We were in the low desert, just above the Mexican border. The temperatures in July were usually around 115 and could sometimes hit over 120. It was stupid to try to do any kind of familiarization or training when all the guys wanted to do was get the heck off the range. Weapons were too hot to touch after about 5 minutes in the sun (everything was wood and steel back then), sweat was running in your eyes, etc. Very much a diminishing returns situation. June was freaking hot, but not July hot. We shifted the quarterly quals by one month.

As someone who qualified all the time in my 20yrs with Rangers and teams I get not wanting to qualify in the worst of conditions, but I also would say that since your officers are still required to carry and be proficient with their firearms in those conditions in the month of July. Making it easier just makes it possible for someone's lack of proficiency to slip through the cracks endangering others. It's why teams go all over to qualify in different environments with different weapons systems, because if it's bad it could happen and you need to be ready to deal with it. Sua Sponte
@oldesertguy9616
@oldesertguy9616 Жыл бұрын
@@bfairfax8772 I understand the concept, and I didn't cancel for rain or other conditions, but they COULD qualify in the heat, it just wasn't a good idea. There is such a thing as diminishing returns when it comes to training, and I just didn't think we were actually accomplishing anything that couldn't be done better in 10 less degrees.

A c-5 model rocket engine fits into a shotgun brass. Also has about the same diameter as a co2. I have built rockets with c02 cartilages full of smokless 2700 with a c-5 behind them that will go through a car windshield and detonate inside. As long as you use enough tape i see no reason you couldn't tape a co2 cartidge full of 300gr smokless to a c-5 booster and fire that as a rpg with a brass 12g primer? The engine and primer will get you out the barrel nice and slow but the primer will not ignite the engine unless you powder some rocket fuel "10gr" and place that into the brass so your primer fires into the engine. You don't want any powder load on this just the 10gr powdered engine fuel and the primer. might get 60-100yds and as long as the co2 nipple is taped into the booster engine directly against the fuel... there will be report. You don't want speed here. I suggest firing it into a 4'x4'x4' balistic cube so it will go in and report the shrapnel 360 degrees inside the block. it will be epic

Another benefit of a 3D printed wad would be that it would hold together better than the TP plus water, making for better filming. Also, if you in a home defense scenario, if that thing penetrates skin and bursts on a bone inside you, the release of gas inside the human body would be... bad. I mean, obviously now we're gonna want to figure out how to stabilize them. Some ideas: 1) Fins. 1/8" "light" wing nuts should fit inside the barrel. Might need to be shaved down a bit. Drill and tap a 1/8", 40 tpi hole in the nipple after evacuating the cartridge, screw in a piece of threaded rod, screw on as many wing nuts as you want. Probably won't work, but will look awesome, just like a bomb dropped out of a B29. 2) Drag. Again, drill and tap the nipple, and screw in a bolt or piece of all-thread with a hole in it. Then attach some sort of drag device. It you used something like a ribbon, you could wrapped in around the nipple for loading. 3) Non-discarding gas seal. Or whatever it is that sometimes stays attached to slugs for stability. Same thing. Drill and tap the nipple and screw down one on. The nipple appears to be about 8-9 mm in diameter for these 18 mm cartridges, so that should be plenty of meat to drill and tap with 1/8 or even 3/16 bolts. Your TP slurry should fill any gaps nicely for support.

It was worth the wait, not as spectacular as hoped but still pretty cool. I shoot muzzle loaders, a rule of thumb the longer the projectile the more spin you need to stabilize the projectile. For instance a ball shoots best at around 1 in 66" twist , a minie ball 1 in 48'' twist a .50 sabot with a 40 -45 cal modern style bullet 1 in 28'' twist. I thought I'd pass this info on to you for future experiments as a point of reference. I doubt a gas cylinder can be stabilized because of the liquid rolling around in it changing the center of gravity. Nice try though. I can't wait to see what comes up next.

Very interesting video. Watching those cartridges tumble made me think of basic model rocket stability. To have stable rocket flight (during a rocket’s coast phase) the body / airframe must have its center of gravity be forward of its center of pressure (generated by aerodynamic drag) by at least one caliber. (Body diameter) A CO2 cartridge’s center of gravity is pretty much in the center of the body. (Find it by balancing a cartridge on an the edge of a ruler or something) So it is reasonable that it will tumble end over end. If you could make one end of the cartridge heavier than the other, and then increase the aerodynamic drag of the lighter end, (Drag an attached streamer - fins would be hard), you just might get those CO2 cartridges to fly straight.

I used to make slugs from co2 cylenders (I guess the ones I had were undersized they were the cheapest I could get so definitely a possibility) by cutting them in half and filling them with lead to make them front heavy and bring the weight to 1oz. Almost like a steel foster slug I'd be interested to see how that idea holds up under a high-speed camera

The two part series works for me - I think seeing the care and attention you put into building the ammo is worth watching, plus the chance to suggest targets is fun. Sorry to repeat myself but if you're going to put up the muzzle velocity on the video, could you do the maths for us and give a muzzle energy figure possibly please? As in this video, you told us what the capsules weigh, I think you're getting about 2,006 ft lbs. Nice.

you know if anything I have learned allot watching your channel, especially in real world SHTF scenario. you can basically load what ever you can fit into a 12 gauge casing. essentially not having to worry about actual projectiles or buckshot, now if you could just show using homemade black powder to make a 12 gauge round that would be effective enough to use a self defense or hunting round say at a max of 25 yards or so.

If you want them to stabilise they have to be emptied of the nitrous. Think about spinning a raw egg vs spinning a hard boiled one. The raw egg will wobble and be unstable but the cooked solid one will spin well.
@Beanpolr

I'm not sure how true that is only because of how pressurized the gas is. The gas isn't able to move around much like the liquid would in your egg example. It's just not a massively stable projectile to begin with being hollow.

That was interesting and would have been great if they were a little bit more accurate but I just don’t see any way something that long with liquid inside it can be stabilized. Fins would have some chance of making a difference but the liquid is still going to cause problems. It would be interesting to see what a lead slug the same length would do. It would fit the barrel properly and engage the rifling. Even better would be OGs reaction to the recoil of firing a 3 ounce lead slug.

I think sufficient spin would stabilize it for a time. But you would need more aggressive rifling then I have ever seen on a gun. And even then it would likely only hold for a few dozen yards before other problems overcome it and make the situation the same. Please note I do mean AGGRESIVE rifling. As in several times more rotations per second being the low end. And while it could probably be done I doubt it would be practical or even remotely easy.

Really needs to be drag stabilized
@spartanonxy

@@ipodhty Don't think that would work to well as the same issue would remain. In that the center of mass would be to mobile within the structure. I would guess you would get small improvements but not a lot. Though it would be a easy fix compared to most of the others. Though if length was not a issue then it would likely work a lot better.

Each cartridge contains roughly 0.18 moles of N2O, about 4 liters at STP. Compressed into a 10 cubic centimeter cartridge means there is liquid N2O..750 PSI at 20°C. Like carbon dioxide, critical temperature is about human body temperature. Pressure rise to over 1000 PSI but they will take it. Warm cartridges might fly better as the contents will be single, super critical phase.

@arty5279
@arty5279 Жыл бұрын
I would imagine the biggest cause of inaccuracy wasn't even the ballistics when it was spinning, but the contents of the container! It probably destabilizes like mad and even cavitates whenever its headed down the barrel, and it continues its instability and transfers that into the capsule itself. Super cool video regardless and I'm astounded that every one of those actually hit something! I almost wonder if there was a type of vein inside the capsule to "catch" the liquid and gas to get it spinning with the capsule itself it'd fly much better with spin.

I don't know if it was more the liquid, or just the worst shape possible to try and shoot straight. With the extreme lack of any consistency, I could see liquid not helping the case. At the same time, nothing that long is going to fly remotely "straight" getting launched at high velocity.

That's partly why I suggested Jeff cut off the nipple and fill one with lead in a comment on the last video. Now that I think about it that would be a lot safer with an empty one. I can't see Jeff buying the gizmo they're intended to be used with though.
@outcast170
@outcast170 Жыл бұрын
@@markfergerson2145 Plausable, however with the gas filed version already at a weight of approx 1oz (or was it exactly 1oz?) Being FILLED with lead would probably be way to heavy to launch. Empty, then filled with enough lead in the bottom to bring its weight back to 1-1.25oz.... Maybe. With a weighted end leading the way it might even fly straight, that doesn't mean it would leave the barrel without compacting the empty end of the cartridge. If you could safely dip the pointy end in lead, keeping the gas and weighting one end, while keeping it under 1.25oz (still a reasonable weight) and it didn't immediately detach as soon as it left the barrel... Pretty much a nose cone, it might actually be semi-accurate, and still go pop on a hit. At that point, it would almost be better to cast a bullet, with better flight and shorter, with a needle type fill nozzle (like a butane lighter or say air in a basketball type nozzle) and use that instead? Considering both would be handmade, individually, at what point does modifying a cylinder become more work than fabricating an entire bullet?
