UPDATE - Several viewers had said that there was a flood and that’s why those stones are laid back there. But apparently not so. Our viewer named John, who lives a mile away for a long time said:
"This cemetery has unfortunately had issues for many, many years due to its age & location. It was later surrounded by an industrial park after the many nearby cemeteries and tuberculosis sanitarium was built across the street. I have owned & lived less than a mile east of it for 30 years and know it has been vandalized numerous times due to its nearly secluded location surrounded by the industrial park and no security or gates for many years until more recently. I believe the flooding mentioned by others was the Indiana Ridge Lawn Cemetery but it has also been a problem near here as well. The sad stacked markers are from a mobile crematorium which was going to be placed there in the early 1990s which was blocked after a large outcry from relatives of the deceased and neighbors who found out about the plans prior to its use. The property has been transferred a few times due to the age and original temples that formed it in the early 20th century long being dissolved after leaving the West side of Chicagos Lawndale neighborhood. The caretakers could not afford upkeep for many years to my knowledge the last I heard."

THIS STORY:
Lazarus Averbuch was a 19-year-old Russian-born Jewish immigrant to Chicago who was shot and killed by Chicago Chief of Police George M. Shippy on March 2, 1908.
The incident occurred during an era of public fear of foreign-born anarchists in the United States, following their involvement with the Haymarket affair in 1886.

THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

The police chief and anarchist story is a strange one. The anarchist side is the most suspect, especially "testimony" by relatives or political associates. Their tales are interesting but they also are invested in covering up for their guy. First, who just walks into a police chief's house (or anyone's house) to find them to sign a paper?? I can't think of any culture where that is normal everyday behavior. Second, Chicago has been a rough, violent city since forever and its odd the chief didn't have his front door locked. High profile LEO's would be a target especially if they ticked off a lawless group like anarchists or the mafia. Carelessness? Could be. The meeting and fight in the hallway leaves out a lot of details. Appears the chief was unarmed initially so the grappling makes sense. Then the other LEO guy comes in and grapples with the anarchist. Before you know it both have guns and shooting the anarchist. There's a number of legit reasons that could explain the sequence of events. Either they're missing from the story OR there's missing with the storyteller. Don't take Face of Forgotten as the gospel truth. He's left important details out of stories before that would sway a listener to a false conclusion. The chief's mental state at the time is certainly questionable. But hey!!, this is Chicago which is infamous for corruption at all levels of government and citizens. A retired Chicago police sgt told me the people of Chicago want a corrupt government and that's exactly what they have. Personally I hate Chicago. I've been there 6 times but only for work reasons (police) and I'd never go there on my own time and dime.

This is actually the norm still in this country. You have to pay for a term, and after that you risk the grave getting removed, so you have to pay another term to keep it. Initial term usually starts at 20 years. There are permanent ones, but it is not the norm here. Lack of space in a small country definitely has something to do with that (The Netherlands). I was VERY lucky to find my mom. My mom was buried in August 1995, and the only reason hers was not affected by the big clearance in that cemetery in 2015 was because when they worked on this massive operation her term still had a few months left on it, being valid till the end of that year. However.. discarding of the markers like that.. THAT is something I have never seen. No matter the cause.. that is terribly disrespectful!

The bacteria that causes Syphilis is Treponema pallidum - it also causes Neurosyphilis. Neurosyphilis (complete loss of mental faculties & disintegration into madness) usually occurs about 10 to 20 years after a person first contracts Syphilis. To understand the level of Syphilis caused madness Shippy was suffering at the time, one would have to know when he was infected. The official Doctor's diagnosis may come years later due to the fact the sufferer does not want to admit they have it & are losing their mental faculties...especially when they are in a high position such as 'Chief of Police'. He would've been stood down & lost just about everything. So it was in his best interests to keep up appearances for as long as possible. Would be interesting to see the records on him from the mental hospital. Given he died there of late stage Syphilis whilst at the mental facility, I'd say his mental faculties were well and truly about a quarter to half gone at the time of Lazarus' death/murder. I doubt Shippey ever sought a medical diagnosis but KNEW what he had. The official diagnosis would've come at the mental hospital. Everyone around him though would've known he was suffering from Neurosyphilis. He would've known too. Compound '606' treatments for this didn't come about until the 1910's - too late for Shipply's condition. Once the neurological damage was done, it was irreversible.

In reality, for THOUSANDS of years, not just hundreds. Ever since Abraham and Sarah, the first patriarch and matriarch of the Jewish people. Why? Read the Bible and then you'll know why. The Jewish people were God's Chosen People, out of the 72 nations. God gave 71 of those nations to the Watchers... angels... to watch over, to teach His Ways and Commandments to them, but instead, those Watchers taught the people of those nations, what today we call pagan, or Gentile, nations to worship THEM instead of God Most High. They are the gods of the pantheons of these nations. So, the Watchers had the people of those nations despise God's Chosen People, the nation He chose for Himself to watch over. And that's where your anti-Semitism derives from. The pagan nations' people despising the people of God Most High because of sheer competition between their gods and God Most High. We call them the 'Fallen Angels', and they are imprisoned in the Abyss, in utter darkness and chains. The Book of Enoch explains all about them. And the truly frightening thing? They're coming back... they're going to be released in Chapter 9 of the Book of Revelation, at the end of their 'time of inequity' (10,000 years), during Jacob's Trouble... we Christians know this period as the Great Tribulation Age, or Daniel's 70th Week, or God's Wrath... even the Day of Our Lord... they're all referring to the same final 7-year Shemitah period of the 40th Jubilee since Jesus was crucified in 32 AD. 2025 AD is when this period is going to be begin, on the Fall Equinox, which is September 17th... the REAL Feast of Trumpets, or Yom Te'Ruah, as documented on the Essenes calendar, not the Talmudic calendar which has twisted the Lord's Feast Days (done in 2 century BC by the Hasmonean false priests that took over the Levitical duties, due to political upheaval in that century).

You don't like that, then you're a part of the problem, not the solution, as to why we are experiencing lawlessness, bigotry, et al, in the world, today. There is a lot more to the Haymarket Riot. It was never proven who threw the bomb. Most of the police that were shot were hit by friendly fire. There isn’t an actuate count of the civilian injured or killed because people feared retaliation so did not report the injuries and deaths. The mayor was present and told the police chief to send the police home, but instead he took it upon himself to try and dispense the crowd.

If the Police Chief Shippy had syphilis, then it is likely he was involved with Prostitutes, as Police regularly are, but he must have taken this involvement into the bedroom, and Syphilis is a disease that will cause people to go mad, or insane because the bacteria that causes the disease works its way into the brain, So I think your conclusion is very likely correct, that Lazarus was indeed Murdered by an insane police chief, especially if they had to protect his own family from him! This is the problem with power without proper oversight, a police chief who may suddenly find himself being propositioned by prostitutes or even a Bawdy house owner tempting him with special treatment in order to be allowed to continue to operate, can often tempt a man beyond his ability to resist, and the next thing you know, he's going every Thursday night after his meeting with the Mayor, so that his wife doesn't suspect his trysts. I can see such things happening back in those days when men of power in such positions were never suspected of such weaknesses. And indeed it might even be a death sentence to voice such suspicions out loud because such men also guarded their reputations with deadly force and had the ability to make things look like what this story points out.

My grandparents and mother are all buried together and just after my mum joined her parents the city council wrote to me as I held the grave papers, they wanted to remove the curb stones that went around the grave. They did the same to a lot of graves. Within 6 months the headstones started to fall over, some of these had only in place for a year, others had been in place since WW1. It was the curb stones that were holding the headstones erect. The next thing is the council are leaving letters on the fallen headstones saying if you don’t fix it we will remove the headstones. SAY WHAT? You knocked them over mate, now you pick them up. I suggested to some that got these letters to get some big lads to lay the headstone down flat on top of the grave and cement it down, quite a few did this but the council weren’t happy. This was all so the grass could be cut quicker if there were no fenced in graves, they just wanted to be able to run the mower over the graves, to save money. There are quite a few people who fell in the wars buried their, no one has respect for anything but money, it’s the alter decision makers worship at. Grrrr.

Thanks for telling us Lazarus' story, Ron. This was a very interesting case. If you're ever able to get over to England we've got some graves with fascinating stories too. One of the ones in the city I live in, Sheffield, is the grave and story of Samuel Holberry, the Chartist martyr. The last time I went to the cemetary his grave is at, the grave itself was inaccessible due to the subsidence of the ground making it unsafe, but Samuel's story is a fascinating and sad one. I'll not retell it here, but will leave it for yourself and other viewers to look it up if anyone wants to. I took a photo of his stome years ago and later made a watercolour painting of it that I still have somewhere.

I was in a large cemetery in London, England, and in one large section, there were signs posted that if you had a descendent in that section, to notify the cemetery, as the area was going to be cleared of bodies so that they can start burying again. Apparently the last body was buried in that section in the 1800's, so it was time to clear the area, and populate with new burials.

Very weird story ! 🤔 Sad , the stones that were just thrown away . It is the same in Germany , at some regions You can rent for a next periode after 20 years and more , at other regions it is 40 years and You can't renew it . They dig the remains out , I guess they shred it ( there is no place where they are collected . Horrific .

The older you get, The less you are shocked, By what your eyes see. And what your heart feels. The more you cry, For what others refuse to see; What others refuse to feel. Life and death remain. Grief in the interim.

How terribly sad that a young man barely out of his teens, came to America to escape Russia and was murdered by a police chief (who may have already been in the mid stages of his disease). That cemetery should be remembered by the Jewish community and restored to a place of dignity. Thank you so much for telling this story.

In IL just south of Chicago, Burr Oak Cemetery was illegally digging up old burial plots, discarded the bodies, and resold them. The case made headlines and several workers were arrested and sentenced to prison. When I saw those misplaced headstones, it reminded me of the Burr Oak caper. I hope people there are visiting their deceased family plots.

Xenophonbia in America at that time was horrific and shameful. What absolutely slays me about the teaching of history in this country is the amount of DENIAL about the treatment of different people. The “carnage” in this cemetery is atrocious and a STATEMENT unto itself. Trying to stay positive, but as a member of those “underrepresented” in American history; I just have to wonder. Thanks for a very informative video, Doll. Love the way you present. Stay safe we’ll and blessed, Brother!!😇😇😇💜💜🙏🏾🙏🏾

Gosh Ron!! What a story!!! I believe that the officer was already in the beginning stages of his nasty disease, when this took place!! Poor Lazarus didn’t have justice at all… very sad how the “classes” of people determined how you were treated in all areas of life. That cemetery is probably dealing with the same issues all the cemeteries are dealing with… not enough income to take care of all the needs. The closest one in my town has so much history, and the roads all around it are in terrible shape and this beautiful place is slowly deteriorating. It saddens me so. Thank you Ron for your dedication to the souls of the departed, and to us, your fans 🥰 I look so forward to all your videos ❤️

From what you've told us, and without any further knowledge or research, I'd have to agree with you that the poor man was murdered. He was only 20 years old. The state of those grave markers is despicable! There's NO possible excuse on earth that would make this acceptable!

What is wrong with most of the pictures and secondly am I the only one noticing the young ages on alot of the graves....men aged 34, etc. God Bless them all though. Ron, again thank you so much for your time and effort. After seeing the way the tombstones are disheveled you would think someone from a society, government office or someone would at least try to fix the disarray

In some cemeteries, those who are buried are only buried for so many years until they resell the plot. I bought 3 plots 10 years ago and the deed to my 3 plots stated it I would only own them for 99 years. They empty the old graves in many cemeteries and put the old one in a mass grave and re-sell the plots! That's why the head stones are moved to the side because they will probably recycle those too!

Such a sad story. He was only 20 years old. So many crimes that were just swept under the rug, and no one held accountable or punished. From the information attained, it does seem that he was murdered. I just recently saw a 60 minutes segment on Emmit Till, a 14 year old boy Tortured and murdered down south in 1955. Another tragic story. It’s just so heart breaking. Thank you so much for sharing. Rest In Peace Lazarus.

Thank you Ron for another fascinating yet sad story. As others have stated you can see the vandalism right from the beginning of your entrance where it seems a person or persons took a hammer and cracked, smashed or dislodged many of the porcelain pictures throughout the cemetery. Its always been a great addition to your tours of the many cemeteries you visited having those porcelain pictures you've photographed bringing an occasional face to the "faces of the forgotten." I would imagine that there would be a large outcry of building a crematorium in a Jewish cemetery. I didn't believe the Jewish deceased would be cremated. That is a history story within itself, just a "follow-up" idea.

I love your channel Ron. I don’t get to see them all as soon as you publish them but your channel is a welcome change to all of the war and political channels I follow. So thank you for all you do. Not only do you tell the story of the person you are showing us but you also give us a brief history of the times they lived in. It’s very interesting and sad at the same time. Like you it sounds like Jerome was murdered. I guess it was just ok for someone to enter these peoples homes uninvited. I too have doubts he could have afforded a gun with the wages they were being paid. Those markers are terrible to be just laid on top of each other. It’s a shame that cemetery was not kept up and respect for those that lie there are not respected. There has to be a story about that but it may take going thru court papers and old newspapers. Sadly history keeps repeating itself.

Based off my experience of working at a cemetery for a few years I learned perpetual care was a scam since perpetual means forever but in reality it only last as long as the cemetery's budget lasts and as long as there are laborer's or volunteers at the cemetery I worked at, the stones that have fallen were only lifted if they were small but the big ones like around 16:10 were only moved if they were paid to be moved by the family (if they were still around) or if the stone was in the way of the grounds keeping
