He met her on Say Hi then transferred the conversation onto WhatsApp where they communicated with one another for seven months. She started asking for money so that she could eat, but it was all in the form of gift cards! Nicholas knew something was off and started investigating immediately. He reached out to Social Catfish to share his experience in dealing with a military romance scam.

@@stephanie90734 yeah my husband would always get really skinny when he relied on the mess hall, the food is inedible (and he grew up super poor on free cheese and food stamps and is NOT fussy in the slightest, will eat anything) and would resort to a couple MREs he didn’t mind. The medical care is pretty bad too. I went to military doctors for years with absolute text book MS symptoms and they told me I had migraines. Also, single soldiers can be very lonely on weekends and holidays. First non military doc I saw spotted it immediately. This Catfish however clearly had no idea how the military worked though.

there are some middle eastern countries and cultures where, if a woman is even allowed to work outside of the home, their money is controlled by a leading male relative. then when they are married the control of their finances is transferred to their husband. Horrible situation but highly uncommon in the USA. But yes, I would call BS on a female military officer not having access to her own income.

@@RCButterfly That's exactly what I thought of!! While unfortunately there ARE places where women's husbands control all of their money, (even money they earn or have inherited themselves!) I'd very much doubt that the US Military would be okay with any soldier- male OR female- having their military pay go into an account that the soldier has no access to!

It’s actually good that this happened to him at his young age instead of being older and lonelier, sitting on a pile of saved money. He learned this lesson early and will be harder to dupe going forward, not just in relationships, but in other situations in life.

He also seems really nice and down to earth. And above everything, nobody deserves to have their credit ruined before they’re proper out of their teens.

Though as human beings we all deserve the respect that we offer to others and we should never settle for less than we are prepared to be and give of ourselves. This young man will make a wonderful partner to someone who knows how to appreciate and be grateful for everything he is.

Nicholas was really brave for telling his story, there are a lot of male victims out there who never tell their story, tbh I think the number of younger victims is also high, mostly because a lot of us are having more and more 'online only' relationships

Actually, statistically, people who have already been scammed are more likely to be scammed again than people who have never been scammed. I would guess it's because it makes them hurt and emotionally vulnerable but I don't know. Someone else comes along and says "I'm sorry that happened, I'm not like her at all, I'm different" and you want to believe it maybe.

When I was approached by someone claiming to be in the military, I asked him to name the different ranks in the Army. The guy got belligerent and stumbled all over his words. Tried to turn the question back on me. I never heard from him again.

Good job for asking questions while on the phone, they don't know everything (it just somethimes seems that way) and not giving him the time to google and find the informations! I really think schools and/or colleges should really start teaching people Life Lessons 101...practical knowledge like how to buy a house, how to buy a car, HOW TO SPOT SCAMS, etc. It will save everybody a lot of grief later on.

He's a sweet kid. Reminds me of my husband at that age. I met my hubby at BK flipping burgers. Today he's an accomplished computer engineer working with US space forces. This young man should apply time to studies and find a young lady who has accomplishments as well. School is great place for meeting ppl.

Totally agree, he's obviously very intelligent but very young and naive. He probably comes from an overprotective family, nothing wrong with that, but it can leave young people naive. He is such a sweet young man, I hope this doesn't turn him into angry bitter person. Please stay the gentle kind soul that you are, just be more cautious please, and block anyone who refuses to video chat and meet in person, and NEVER give money for any reason! I was scammed, but the person was real, just borrowed money, and never paid back. It could happen to anyone, never say not me.

Yeah. It could happen to anyone out there no matter how cleaver you are. I just experience that lost thousand plus and I feel myself stupid in the end angry at myself even when I noticed some if red flag yet I feel that if thought if I don't help they might be in deep trouble and realized they are not worth any ouch of sympathy...... @@evolutionaryadvantage In the states the Armed Services aim a lot of their advertising at kids. Part of those advertisements is that you will have almost no overhead for things like medical care, food, housing, insurance. In the states they fling 10s of thousands of dollars at new recruits and give them guaranteed mortgages and college tuition afterwards. They also get first dibs at postal jobs, law enforcement, and first responder by getting extra points on the employment exams. If you SURVIVE without being rped or blown to bits it's a sweet setup. Point is though this is fairly common knowledge.

Man, I saw one recently where the dude gave that story about his weapon and said the replacement would be something like $12,000. When the gal said "I don't have $12,000!" he ended up coming back later and saying "Oh, I found a used one for $1,600" and she sent the money...🤦♀️ As if the US Army is having their soldiers buy their weapons used online individually. Get it together, people.

It is amazing how many people fall for these scams. After I went on FB I received 67 different love scammer contacts in the first year. Yes I counted them. So it’s just not dating sites. After the third I recognized the spiel. Usually a captain in the army. My reply to them is, I’m old not stupid and block them. Thank you for what you do. I’m 74 by the way.

He did it again. Why? He called the woman the young mans FIRST GIRLFRIEND. He asked the young man if he was going to DATE again. It makes me furious. The scammer was not a GIRLFRIEND, nor did they date. It enforces the false narrative.

Yep. I 100% agree. I left a similar comment recently on another video. In their ads they also say something like "if you need to validate the identity of your online lover..." I think they're honestly doing people a bit of a disservice by wording it that way. It just puts the idea into people's mind subconsciously that these "relationships" hold far more weight than they actually do. "Online lover" is already a nonsense term to begin with, and it's even more inappropriate when using in in reference to this madness.

Nicholas, you are the same age as my grandson! I am so sorry this happened to you. Don't beat yourself up over it. It was not your fault. Much older people, with more life experience, have been caught the same way. You are helping others by being brave enough to put your story out there. You are so young. There is plenty of time. My grandson has not yet had a serious relationship. Heck, I did not meet my husband till I was 35 and he 37. We have been married for 32 years now. Good luck. from a UK grandma.

There are so many girls yelling that they live near him and are alone, playing video games etc. Volunteer somewhere for something that means a great deal to you. You will meet so many people that will be friends, and through them, who knows?

I hope this young man realizes someone who cares about him will not be telling him if you don’t send money you don’t care/ love me.. this is not love this is using. If you meet someone online ALWAYS do a reverse image search. I’ve had a few through social media contact me , you can normally tell they use screwed up wording or within an hour telling you they are wanting to get married. Be careful out there being scammed out of cash is one thing, being scammed out of a kidney is something else.

It seems like these scammers think being in the military is like being a volunteer prisoner? Or maybe even worse, they at least feed prisoners and give them certain equipment for jobs and recreation for free. And they expect the people they scam to accept this too, it's crazy but I understand how they sort out their potential victims. If you're willing to accept that the military leaves people stranded on base then you'd be easily willing to send money

A friend of mine is being scammed right now by a lady claiming she is a military nurse. He's being scammed and no matter what I tell him, he's not believing it. He's in his 50s, relatively newly single after 30 years, and he is not aware of how devious these scammers are.

I've tried everything I can think of, reverse lookup, online search, even on her Facebook there are huge red flags he's being catfished, her high school and business college shows Nigeria and and Ghana. I showed him that too, that should have hit him in the head, but he said it could be possible she went there. In done spending my time trying anymore. It's not like he's unaware NIW, he's just being stupid and gullible now.

Usually the victims in these videos exasperate me, but there's something so sweet and wholesome about Nicholas. I honestly feel really bad for him and I hope he realizes that he's incredibly young and will find a REAL woman who will cherish him very soon in life ❤️ I hope Nicholas is doing okay these days and has found mental peace since! I remember being 18 & 19, (I'm 30 now,) and honestly you're still SO young at that age and many times, you still have the mind of an innocent child. Nicholas didn't deserve this and it's clear he truly did this earnestly. Thanks for showing support to Nicholad everyone, if any victim of scamming deserves empathy, it's Nicholas. I also really respect Nicholas for being brave enough to come forward with his story, especially many men don't tell the world that they were scammed. What a sweet, young, man! 🥺

You can have a connection with someone that you've never met in person. It's true that just because you video chat with them for hours almost every day, you still don't know them very well. It is also possible to be in a physical relationship with someone for years and not know everything about them. An online relationship is "real" to the person or people involved. If you've never experienced it, it's understandable that it doesn't make sense to you. No, I have never been scammed out of any money. Yes, I have been in an online relationship that lasted for over 2 years. Would I do it again? No, I wouldn't.

Once someone chatted me up telling me he was in the military. The flirting made me uncomfortable, felt I was being love-bombed. Then he said he needed money for some military clearance. I told him my ex had been in the army. And I know perfectly well that the doesn’t charge you for leaving. That ended it.

There are ALWAYS military personnel on a military base, 24/7/365. Right from the barracks guard, chefs (food is already paid for), right up to someone in charge at the top. There are always medics on duty in the barracks med centre. You cannot buy a weapon to replace one which is lost - it is a court martial offence to lose a weapon. All weapon serial numbers are listed in the unit armoury and none can be replaced by a bought weapon.

Yesss!! Watching this has made me realize I *really* need to have a talk about these kind of scams with my teenager!! As moms, I know we all want to think that our boys will always trust us enough to be able to come to us about this kind of stuff, but embarrassment is a helluva thing...especially at that age! (Don't I remember!!) You've reminded me that we ALL need to be vigilant, nonjudgmental and accessable to our kids, because this could happen to anyone's son! Thanks so much for this comment. A 19 year old guy falling for this? Did not even try to verify who "she" was? Not even a phone or video call? No verifying with the military on how they look after their employees? There was no mention on where he sent the gift cards? I am so weary of these "victims" who purposely cause this company to have to investigate something totally preventable; you dont't send anything to anyone you never met.
