Small correction to your discussion, Mina is 27. It was stated in the first episode. They’re childhood friends, but Kafka is 5 years older than her.

While Kafka's knowledge isn't secret it comes from over a decade of hands-on experience. Even if they have gone to specialty schools for fighting kaiju, not all of the recruits have such detailed knowledge of kaiju anatomy. It is helpful to have someone on hand who can figure out the weaknesses of the enemy.

Kafkas knowlegde got insane value, he did that for over a decade. You could clearly see it in the episodes before. While they are all trained, they dont have the experience and knowlegde to handle them that way. You could even say, they all tried brute force with military tactics, while he was analyzing the enemy and make use of weak points

Here's some context to the awkwardness of Kikoru's line about Mina's muscles. That part isn't in the manga at all, it's an anime-only addition. I'm not even sure why they decided to add it, other than to maybe show Kikoru's admiration for her.

All you need is kill is a full-on manga, not light novel, I read it last year and it was cool, wish the movie got a sequel. Also, Vice-Captain Hoshina steals the show so far, reminds me a lot of Doakes from Dexter somehow, he was also onto him and roasting him at the same time

While I'm not saying there aren't any kaiju that are the result of experiments, from what I gather, kaiju have been around for centuries by this point. That said, they have gotten stronger as of late, based on what they said in this episode.

Bigs muscles aren't always the best for certains jobs or situations, Kikoru was jealous of Mina because she has the quantity necesary and a body with a sctructure sculpt.

I'm wondering if the tiger pet is special case for mina? I used to imagine that all higher ranking officers have unique pets as their battle companions or something.

I think this is somewhat based on Pacific Rim. If that's the case then kaiju aren't scientific experiments. But I could be wrong.
