Lesson on Histamine Synthesis and Metabolism from the amino acid Histidine. Histamine is a biogenic amine that acts as a local signaling molecule and a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Histamine is produced from the essential amino acid histidine in mast cells, basophils, ECL cells and histaminergic neurons. Histamine is important in several processes including anaphylactic (allergic) responses, regulation of gastric secretion, and also acts as a potent vasodilator. Histamine is eventually metabolized by key enzymes including diamine oxidase (histaminase) and histamine N-methyltransferase, and histamine metabolites are eventually secreted in the urine.
