I never fully understood this, but my grandmother had scarlet fever as a child, 100+ years ago, and she was treated with a diet of organ meats, primarily liver, which she was given to eat raw. She continued to eat liver all her life, nearly raw. She lived to be 104 years and died of the flu. I now eat the way she ate. :) I love you always, Granny.

My mother who grew up as a peasant subsistence farmer in the old country made the most amazing clear chicken soup. I can vouch gor how good taurine is in preventing leg cramps. For years I tried everything to stop night leg cramps. I had loads of magnesium and potassium already with no effect. My physical therapist told me his sports clients were having success with just one gram of taurine per day. Ever since I started taking it. I haven't had cramps! Whole Foods or probably any health food store had plain taurine, free form amino acid capsules for a reasonable price. You don't need all the other stuff in the sports drinks that might contain taurine.

A lot of people seem to shy away from the meat content in sausages of various types. I know they're "throw away" meat, and often contain things like lips, heart, etc. even some cartilage or bone unfortunately sometimes. But those bits do have redeeming value dietarily. Eggs & dairy are really hard to beat too. Many years ago, there was a guy who ran a 5k marathon at the age of 105. The news interviewed him, and asked him jokingly what he eats. He said "hot dogs". This was during the "fat is scary" dietary craze, when everyone was eating margarine. Anyway, the reporter laughed, thinking it was a joke. But the guy's wife was there as well. He robbed the cradle, as she was only 80 or so. Anyway, she interjected "oh no, he's not joking! He only eats hotdogs for dinner".

Good point - less palatable 'offel' meats can be very tasty when treated as sausages and cured, but also noting that they tend to be meats that are usually well cooked and difficult to consume undercooked, which will obviously reduce the taurine content. You would really have to trust your butcher to eat a 'rare' sausage.

50+years ago, in medical school, we were taught, that for some patients, proper nourishment is the most effective treatment. 45 years ago, we came to America, and were told to eat eat cereal and to avoid real food, because it would cause high cholesterol. We discovered that people were taking something called “supplements”, while supermarkets were overflowing with real food 😂 needless to say, we have been eating the old fashioned way, the best grassfed foods. Sunshine, exercise, making a good living. How long we’ll live is in god’s hands.

I was not aware of the importance of taurine for us humans Dr. Berry. Thank you for enlightening me about the human need also sir... But I foster cats and kittens for a couple local animal shelters and also fostered for a 501(c)3 rescue group so for many years I have been aware that a deficiency of taurine can cause eye problems, heart problems, or structural problems with the bones and joints. So I'm always checking labels on any cat/kitten food that I buy or that is donated to me to be sure that pregnant or nursing mom and her offspring are not being offered a diet deficient in taurine...

Yes, Taurine is essential for cats. Felines are “obligated carnivores.” They need to eat biological species appropriate food and not manufactured pet food. Yes, cats will live but they do not thrive on food that has little nutritional value for them. Cats require meat and organ meats..preferably RAW. If cats are fed biological species appropriate food, then they do not require taurine supplements.

Meat is a major dietary source of taurine for humans. A 3-oz. beef steak would provide 55 mg taurine, which would meet about 70% of daily taurine requirement by healthy adults. Because plants contain no taurine, abundant amounts of taurine from all kinds of meats demonstrate another important contribution that animal foods make to improving human health and well-being. It also further underscores the significance and importance of animal agriculture worldwide.

Hi Randi, you may want to look into GSE (grapefruit seed extract, not grape seed extract- they’re different things). GSE is a wide spectrum antibacterial, anti fungus, anti viral, any yeast etc. it can be taken internally to treat all sorts of GI issues/infections etc. I personally have been using it for years for flu and other things. I also had a few GI track advanced testing done including GI360 which is considered to be the most comprehensive test available today. Whenever they find anything they test bacteria/viruses to different drugs (commercial antibiotics etc) and natural options - GSE almost always comes on top as the most effective! There’s a paper called “Antibacterial Mode of Action of Grapefruit Seed Extract against Local Isolates of Beta-Lactamases-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and its Potential Application”. Google it. I know it’s a different type of klebsiella, but I’m pretty sure the results would be somewhat similar. Give it a go. Don’t trust the doctors and all their “antibiotic resistant”, “incurable” or any other bs they like to parrot. The only reason it’s “resistant” or “hard to treat” is because they haven’t come up with a pill they could patent to make money. There are plenty of other options available to treat the issue but they won’t ever tell you because it doesn’t bring moneys to their pockets.
@xmyxymx

Keep in mind things may get worse before it gets better. Sometimes people have flu type symptoms or stomach upset etc after starting taking GSE or similar supplements. The bad ‘bugs’ start dying off, they rebel or cause die off toxicity or something like that, so keep this in mind, reduce the dosage and increase slowly.

Hello doctor ant thanks for the valuable information. Question, when I get a general health assessment with my doctor, is taurine listed in the result of the analysis? If so, what is the optimal/healthy amount of it in our bodies and how is it measured? Thanks!

I've read that the most Taurine you can get from top-source foods is 400mg per day. Many medical talks on Taurine suggest 6000mg per day....hence supplements only.

I’ve sure heard of Taurine ! Cats cannot live without Taurine. I had afib and researched what to do about it. I used Taurine and potassium and magnesium to heal my heart. And yes they were supplements because I did not feel like eating enough food to do what I needed to do and that right quick. I can never eat anything with its blood because I try to always stay kosher.

Meat from the grocery store doesn't have blood in it, at least in the US. All animals are drained of blood when slaughtered, because the blood spoils quickly. The red liquid you see coming out of beef is not blood. It's the myoglobin, the liquid inside of muscle cells that makes the muscle look red.

L-Glutamine is the most abundance amino acid, Taurine second. The issue with getting Taurine from meat & dairy is then likely suffering the eventual diseases associated with meat & dairy consumption. Human primates are more Evolved towards a Herbivorous diet hence our long low acid alimentary canal, a small amount of meat & dairy will not hurt but to be truly healthy inside longterm food should be predominantly whole food plant based, ideally roots shoots tubers nuts seeds legumes fruit veg herbs. Nobody can deny most of our ancestors were not eating meat from over 30 millions years since Apes emerged from a monkey lineage then another divergence 7 million yrs ago from a common Ape ancestor eventually creating Chimpanzee Apes & then Homosapiens-Human Apes just 250 thousand years ago were mostly plant based. So we cannot escape that body adaption, To steer away from the best dietary habits in order to misalign with plant based digestive Evolution only makes illness note likely no matter how much we like it. So bottom line keep meat & dairy to t a minimum and supplement Taurine with a quality vegan based product what ever your eating habits. Keep in mind the 5 blue zones around the world identified as the longest living communities on Earth ARE ALL PREDOMINANTLY PLANT BASED. Go figure, it’s a no brainer. Look up the 5 blue zone for yourself. Learn what the best food really is for Human African Great Apes.:-)

I love beef heart. I can eat that almost every day. I called it dinosaur steak for my kids so they would eat it, they loved it too. It has a rich taste, not wild or gamey. We've always fry it in butter, salt. Firm chew without being chewy or tough..unless you cook it too long.

@@autumnfeldpausch5539 Me also Beef heart is so good. Just learned to like it growing up.when we butchered we would have fresh heart and liver at least once a week. People are not healthy these days because of what they are eating. I make sure I and my family get it either supplement form or fresh through my butcher. I'm 75 and take no meds nor do I have a doctor that I regularly see. I'm Feeling like I did when I was a kid at home. I'm gonna live to be 120 anyways.

@@RogueCylon sorry it took so long replieing to you. But beefheart taste very good. My mom used to cut it into strips much like finger sized chicken tenders roll it in flour salt and pepper and fried in lard or Bacon grease until it was crispy on the out side. That's the only way I know to do it but it's so darn good.

Your confession made me laugh... that you aren't that "froggy about jumping on insects" for taurine nutrition. Most Americans might agree. But I had some fortunate (?) early influences in trying exotic foods. In my youth, I had friends who worked at the Smithsonian. They had some studies going on of alternate food sources from around our Earth. Insects were on the menu of some of our dinner parties. Crispy fried grasshoppers and chocolate dipped ants were two of my favorites. I skipped the cockroaches and bloodworms. Their sight and smell ruined my willingness to taste them. And mealworms were apparently a great protein source. But for me, the riggling and crackle-pop as they live-fried left them less appetizing to me. Maybe a different outcome, if I had been a tad hungrier. I am glad to have experienced these alternative foods. Opened my eyes to possibilities. I have a great recipe for heart-liver-steak& mushroom meatloaf. It's delicious to this reborn carnivore!
