Since 1994 the 21st of March has been observed as Human Rights Day in commemoration of the men and women who were slaughtered by apartheid police as they protested against Pass Laws in Sharpeville on this day in 1960. It is also the site chosen by former president Nelson Mandela to sign into law the constitution in 1996.
