Michael, thank you for your comment. I too love Dun Laoghaire. Like you I immigrated with my family many years ago but now that I am retired I spend time each year in Dun Laoghaire. Do you think that you might return for a second visit sometime?

Thank you so much Michael & David. A wonderful video of my hometown. My mother was born here in 1923 & her father too, Patrick Mundow, who was an undertaker near the 'purty kitchen '. He returned from ww1 having lost all his toes in the trenches in Flanders. My mother joined the ATS in WW2 & returned & settled here. I was born in 1960 & grew up here too. Thank you. Awesome ☘❤

Dun Laoghaire has changed so much since i left looking for my fortune & fame in 1963 , Maybe i was lucky i found work straight away i was happy & could afford to go home twice a year , got married my family was brought up as Irish & loved to come home to meet their Aunts & Uncles but as they got older whet wanted to see the rest of the world also keep their Irishness , in the last two years i have gone home three times for different reasons , The days of Alcohol & smoking are long gone ,

These days i would like to enjoy the wildlife , the long walks , everything Dun lAOGHAIRE Dalkey Bray has to offer the things that were there even before i left , i'm 71 now & free to return Dun Laoghaire , but accommodation seems to be my problem . I have got some finance but not enough . ( I was 16 when i left )

Thank you for your compliments on the video. Though the shopping area has not recovered from the national economic 'bust' and clearly needs more vendors in its empty shops, much has been done to improve the town in recent years, especially the addition of housing, the library, and other amenities along the coast. It may be a challenge to turn the town into a vibrant shopping destination but I am optimistic that things will continue to improve. In short, I find it a wonderful place to live.

David Owens that library was a disgrace, with costs in double figure millions, and badly used internal space, aka more books and desks could be provided. It is a pity that the place never recovered, additionally the council have failed to facilitate a working friendly prosperous business environment with little emphasis on care or duty. The marine front has been renovated to provide restaurants and coffee shops, but plays only as a minor distraction to mess the place is in now. It is regrettable, Dun Laoghaire is nothing as it was in the film The Snapper or indeed the late 80s-90s. It’s a pity.

@Dún Laoghaire Bríd Dundrum is not a monstrosity as you call it, but rather a successful project borne of the Celtic Tiger and loved by the Celtic Tiger cubs. The issue with Dun L is numerous, but mostly one to do with a lack of ability for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council to create incentives for any quality brands or robust business to set up. Since 2008 the rapid decline and loss of status of Dun L has compounded itself into a wasteland, comprising of an abundance of shit temporary shops, a three story shopping centre which landlords make no effort to reduce rent rates, and a far larger community which either is or knows someone who uses the methadone clinic. Additionally the irresponsible DLRC decided to place misguided effort in supporting and/or funding what I believe is a 40million euro library which fails to add value to the local economy, and additionally oversaw the revamping of lower Marine Road to the Peoples Park with flower beds and a few restaurants, again a project which overall presents low benefit to cost outcomes. It is a sad state of affairs and every DLRC politician or landlord of a business premises should ask themselves how could they have done better.

Thank you for your comments. Yes, we should have said George 3rd; however, my sources say the Rochdale sank on the rocks at Seapoint near Monkstown in Dublin Bay, so I will need to check if this is correct.

Many residents of other parts of Dublin, including Northsiders, come to Dun Laoghaire to walk the piers and along the seafront , and some teenagers come to jump off one of the piers to swim in the harbour.
