Tucked away in dense woodland on the outskirts of Haddington in East Lothian lies an imposing 18th century walled garden that has been restored from an overgrown wilderness into a vibrant and welcoming community garden.
Come and explore this wonderful garden with me! At 8 acres in size, it is one of Scotland’s largest walled gardens. With 16-foot-high stone walls and Grade 1 listed ornamental, circular pavilions in each corner of the garden it’s a truly handsome space.
Run entirely by volunteers from the local community, this magnificent garden has been restored to its current state by a band of dedicated men and women and is open to the public (free of charge) all year round.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Amisfield Walled Garden lies within Amisfield Park, an 85-hectare country estate. The park once formed the grounds of Amisfield House, a mansion built by the Earl of Wemyss in the 1750s. The garden was built between 1782 and 1788 and would have produced a constant supply of fresh fruit and vegetables for the house. It was used for traditional cultivation until WWII. Amisfield House was demolished in 1928 and much of the parkland was incorporated into Haddington Golf Course. The Wemyss family sold the park to Haddington Town Council in 1969, but sadly the garden fell into disrepair until 2013 when Amisfield Preservation Trust was granted a 99-year lease on the garden and surrounding woodland from East Lothian Council. Since then, the painstaking task of restoring the gardens to their former glory has been ongoing and the garden you see today is thanks to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers.

Exploring East Lothian, Scotland on foot. In these video's I visit interesting and historic places as well as taking beautiful walks in the countryside. I've made these videos for a variety of reasons - for those who want to explore, virtually, new places perhaps before they visit themselves or just out of curiosity, and for those who want to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of nature for relaxation and to boost their mental health. Scotland has such a wealth of beauty, nature and history and I want to share that to people all over the world!
I want you to enjoy the walks as if you are taking them yourself, so there will be no talking or music. I think that makes a more calming and peaceful experience on the nature walks, but on the tours there will sometimes be some at the bottom of the screen with interesting information at relevant points.
If you enjoy these videos, make sure to subscribe and click the notification bell so that you don't miss out on any new videos.
