I grew up in Connecticut and in many of the town and cities there are old buildings like that. Most of them were factories from the early part of the 20th century. My friend was a city historian, and showed me some houses that were hundreds of years old. I love all of that old architecture. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and back in those days, those buildings were either still in use or simply not that old. My grandparents and great-grandparents had all sorts of furniture that they were still using as common furniture, that now go for big money as antiques. Pretty cool stuff!

The Mississippi river will freeze over in that area. In the late 70’s, the bridge at Marquette was closed due to some bad issues found during an inspection. The closest bridge north was at Lansing which was about an hour north. In the summer, they had a ferry at Marquette to take you over the river. We had a real cold winter that year and they had to cut the ice with big saws so the ferry could continue to run during the winter

Oh my goodness! This is my part of the world ❤ Thank you so much for visiting. I would have given you some travel detour tips and other off the beaten path must see places. You did a great job highlighting the beautiful scenery along the Mississippi River. We are proud of our communities and small town atmosphere. If you can just imagine the Dairy Days & Independence Day small town celebrations. I watched many firework shows in the Dubuque & Guttenburg parks. My father worked at the John Deere factory along the Mississippi near Dubuque. He had a machine shed full of antique tractors that he would proudly ride in those parades. You drove past my uncle & cousins home as you went through Guttenburg. I now own a cottage with the river in my backyard, nothing compares to thunderstorms on the Mississippi. The river does freeze in the winter, however there is usually open water near the dam areas. I was fortunate enough to travel the country with my dad when I was young, so your videos are so enjoyable & entertaining to me. Before he passed away I asked him what his favorite place to visit was, he told me there is nothing more beautiful than the rolling hills of Iowa ❤

The dam system on the Mississippi is definitely a marvel. Senator Long (a long-time senator) was instrumental in the construction of the Alton Illinois dam. Senator Pietro Vichi "Pete" Domenici from New Mexico was a rookie in the Senate. He attached a rider to Senator Longs' bill for the "Waterway usery fee." In order for the bill to pass, the rider had to pass with it. The tax of the inland shipping fuel, whether Mississippi, Great Lakes, Ohio or any other inland waterway used for commerce, was the first of its kind since William Penn said quote "Keep the waterways free and clear of taxation" after the war on Independence. One can either thank Senator Domenici for the fuel tax that paid for dams, parks, and other federal projects along all navigable inland waterways. Or, as Senator Longs objection to the rider, cursed it because it would increase the cost of goods. At that time, though, the waterways were the only mode of commerce that wasn't taxed. Railroads, trucking industry (the most regulated and taxed), and the airline industry all paid a tax. It should be noted that at that particular time in history, railroads, barge/ship, trucks, and air in this order were the efficiency gpm (gallons per mile of fuel) per ton of goods shipped, trucks paid the most in taxes. The irony is that it takes a truck, the most taxed and regulated at the time, to move the goods from the rail yards, ports, and airports. The cost to build dams, docks, and airports was way more expensive to build since the interstate system had already been completed. The need for electricity prompted the federal government to build the dams (yet, leased or sold the power generating rights). The need to move people domestic and internationally prompted the need to build airports. The railroads were built earlier on mainly through private funds. The federal government did take private land or granted land free of charge for railroads right of ways. For me, the Mighty Mississippi is more than just muddy water. It was the start of new era of taxation. Just a tid bit of Mississippi River history.

That branch breaking sound was either a human or a sasquatch. Squirrels don't make that much noise, and snap branches that quickly, over and over, like that. That was cool! I doubt it was human. Didn't sound like any other known animal that I would think would keep rapidly breaking branches.

Brick was, and I guess still is, depending on where you live, the gold standard. These towns started with wooden structures but because of frequent fires, brick was the way to go. It truly stood the test of time plus it’s so cool looking. Having lived in California my whole life, brick is foreign. With all the seismic activity here in the west, brick is not desirable.
