This cleared up my questions to my family Sir why my grandfather was the barangay Kapitan for 42 years ng bayan namin sa Panay. Counting back mga late 1800's pa po sya under Spanish regime. It's written in our town's document. The last picture we had about him he was wearing the revolutionary uniform. Kaya pala. May late parents just passed away in their 90's. Salamat po.

Spain also owned Guam and the Marianas Islands as well as Spanish Equatorial Guinea. When Spain surrendered in the Spanish-American War to the Americans, they gave up Puerto Rico, Cuba, Marianas Islands, and the Philippines to the USA in exchange for US$20M. The Americans and Spanish held a mock battle of Manila in which there was a fake exchange of gunfire after which the Spanish opened the gates of Intramuros to let the Americans occupy the walled city. The Americans allowed the Spanish administrators and citizens to ship out to Spain with the treasures they had collected from the archipelago. Only the Spanish friars and the Catholic Church remained.

The Philippines was ceded to the US not sold. It s like a “fee”. Aguinaldo decided to surrender because he felt that they were losing the war. If your hypothesis is correct then another leader should’ve carried over the revolt. If Spain lost to the US at the time then I couldn’t see why the Philippines would’ve won at all especially after $20 Mill. Now Alaska was sold to the US for ironically $20 mill as well. Just FYI..

philippines is not and can not be considered as an independent state, their independence was merely granted by the americans in 1946 and was not earned, independence and freedom are earned through a successful revolution, rebellion or insurrection, declaration is not enough to win freedom. a nation to be considered as free, it must be capable of defending its territory and sovereignty, philippinese people are neither capable of either. philippinese people are totally dependent on americans militarily and economically, therefore, they are not considered as an independent country. by virtue of acquisition from spain, philippines is a property of united states, thus, the inhabitants of philippines are merely subjects and not citizens.
