Several years of intensive independent research has suggested, to me, that Margaret Fuller was a literary and intellctual imposter. Specifically, she falsely claimed authorship of the reviews signed "F." in "The Dial," and the "star"-signed reviews, essays and reports in the 1844-46 New York "Tribune." She was only the editor in both cases--the real author, I have concluded, was Mathew Franklin Whittier, the younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. In my opinion, Fuller plagiarized eleven of Mathew's pieces in her 1846 compilation, "Papers On Literature and Art."
