Not to mention the fact that Kat Ashley, Elizabeth's favorite lady-in-waiting, is actually her governess and is supposed to be 30 years older than her. They pretty much had a mother-daughter relationship. In the movie, however, Kat Ashley is a young woman and close to the same age as Elizabeth.

And she was Walter Raleighs great aunt! Elizabeths boy toy from the second movie. And she was more like Walsignham 2.0, she snuck around for information and provided it to Elizabeth. She had such a huge role in her life and to see it erased in this movie.elizabeth visited her deathbed everyday and was so distraught when the woman who was practically her mother just wasn't in court one day. The tie in with the dress was kinda creative...Kat was gifted a French silk dress by the queen but she wasn't poisoned and didn't die horrifically like this. Not to mention they would have had to have soaked that dress in a vat of whatever toxin they used which would have been needed by the gallon, something not able to be accomplished in 1500-whatever.

The pictures you are showing of the current Hatfield House is not the one Princess Elizabeth would have known. It was built much later in 1611, eight years after the death of Queen Elizabeth I. There is a section of the old palace at Hatfield that stands nearby and does look medieval and bears a resemblance to the one in the film. Also, the Tower of London was not just used as a prison for accused traitors and criminals. It was used as a royal palace. For centuries, it was the place where new monarchs would stay until their coronation. They would travel in grand procession from the Tower to be crowned in Westminster Abbey.

It IS accurate in that there were many conduits built in London and larger cities in England, which were for fresh water to flow for people to access. Many people in the cities may not have had access to wells or springs. So this provided clean, fresh water. On Holy days and festivals, the authorities would have the conduits run with Wine for the citizens. Even the fountains were accurate though tended to be only where the King was.

The Hatfield House you show as "fit for a Renaissance Princess" was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, William's son. What's left of Elizabeth's home is now called The Old Palace at Hatfield
@TheAxeMixa
@TheAxeMixa Жыл бұрын
Tbf the Old Palace is still a good deal prettier than whatever that old castle thing is they show in the movie, but your quite right. It's rather a glaring inaccuracy of the video as well, as Hatfield House is considered a key example of an early modern Country House, not renaissance. It might seem minor, but if you have any sort of interest in the architectural history of england, it's almost as glaring an error as comparing a renaisance manor to an old medieval castle. Perhaps even more, since renaisance manor's stil rettained many architectural elements of old castles.

@@HK-gm8pe Well, they *were* childhood friends- & she wasn't exactly in pole place to become the next ruler of England when her father died- odd matrimonial bonds had been made before now, so it was hardly impossible; I mean, do we have any indications from first hand sources that Edward's health would be so frail early on, & that he would never get to marry & father an heir? Mary *could* have had a child during her 3/ 4-year marriage (I mean, by the time she married, she was heading into menopause- which wouldn't have helped her bio-clock, but Catherine Parr had initially counted herself out on motherhood, too, most like- & she'd been married like three times- so she had even more reason to do so - when she finally got herself hitched to Tom Seymour), & Elizabeth's status/ marriage prospects would have dropped further; much like she & Mary's did, when Edward was born. The thing is, obviously; due to her royal status, heir to the throne or not- people would have been watching her, due to what happened when she was younger. Royalty & high nobility largely married for political reasons, as everyone well knows- rare are the Catherine of Valois/ Edmund Tudor or, Edward IV/ Elizabeth Woodville-type matches - though, *had* Elizabeth's siblings managed to live longer/ have children, her marriage prospects may have become less of a concern. Conversely, like Nick mentions- his family's connection to the taint of treason might have impacted his chances, even more than his marital status. It's not often mentioned outside of the famous example of Mary, Queen of Scots, but Elizabeth could be quite cruel to potential heirs to the throne- the hapless Lady Jane Grey had sisters, who- in accordance with Henry's will, were in line to the throne; I can't recall what happened with them, but I believe one of them ended up in the Tower, when they married someone else who was also somewhere in the line of succession- there their child Arbella, or Arabella Stuart- who lived into the reign of James I, & was basically under house arrest 'til she died. Given it's said she was a well educated & charming young woman, you can't help but wonder how different history would be- had Elizabeth accepted the Greys, & just raised Arabella her as heir...

I saw this movie when it first came out and thought (and still think) it was wonderful. I'm not sure I actually ever thought it was historically accurate out meant to be. I remember from the poster alone, with the very attractive Cate Blanchett's strewn about her shoulders, you realized you weren't going to watch your grandfather's Queen Elizabeth. And I think your early summation, about the filmmakers wanting to make a historical drama, is dead on. The movie is very stylized throughout. When Elizabeth and Cecil have sex, I doubt the bed curtains had a pattern of eyes on it, either. In other words, I never thought the movie was historically accurate, but I never thought it was trying to be either, and I thought it was pretty clear about that.

Steph Smith it probably had more to do with risking her power. Gaining a king would make her loose some power, she had total control as a single monarch I’m sure her moms death and step moms deaths didn’t help but she still loved men throughout her life

@@wilmafistfit4788 I agree with you, it was more about not being in a position to BE BEHEADED at the 'whim' of some man! And she could only maintain the power to be safe from that by NEVER marrying...

@@htoodoh5770 I'm probably bias but ...the dude killed two of his wives, abandoned the other. The only ones who escape that mess was the one who went along with the divorce (though I think the guy who set it up got executed) and the one who outlived him. And then came how he treated his daughters.

Let's be honest, no one watches Elizabeth for historical accuracy. But we do watch this show for the pleasure of you ripping the big historical threads apart. Thanks for the upload!

I really enjoyed this movie, especially the performances of Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush the latter as the oily spy Sir Francis Walsingham, he plays the part in an especially chilling way. I don't care about the inaccuracy, the film makers must be allowed creativity and surely they had to condense the events into a few years at the beginning of the reign of one of our greatest monarchs.

Howdy, Mr. Hodges! 👋 This review was an absolute joy to experience. Not just in terms of historical enlightenment, but genuine fall-out-of-your-chair laughter.😂 I dare say, had my school teachers had even a fraction of your talent and/or personality, I would've enjoyed social studies a great deal more! Algebra, geometry and trig would almost certainly have continued to suffer, but you know... math.😁 Your Father [may he rest in peace] had every right to brag about his son's talent, intelligence and level of success. The content of your channel is easily on par with any History Channel program I've seen... even if you can't match their production budget.😉 Time VERY well spent... and more than worth the price of admission. SUBSCRIBED! 🥳

It is amazing how many historical sources are preserved for England at that age. Other places are less fortunate.

A small detail: It was Bloody Mary leading the coup against the Queen, Jane Grey, who was the heir to Edward VI, not vice-versa.

I like that Dudley is played by the guy who played William Shakespeare in "Shakespeare in Love." There is something symbolic about that.
