My Sources For This Series:
The Books: Electronic Drumfax: Vintage Electronic Drum Kits (1970-1990) and The Complete Simmons Drum Guide: The Rise And Fall Of Simmons Electronic Drums by Alex Graham. Those are the very best books on electronic drum history that you can buy. Go buy both of them, you won’t be disappointed. Another helpful book was Electronic Drums. By Frank Vilardi and Steve Tarshis. It was written around 1985 or so and features lots of mini-reviews of early electronic drums from the early 80s (it even comes with a Flexi-Disc record). The Complete Simmons Drum Book by Bob Henrit is also a great read. I was lucky to buy it for $60. The book is out of print and going for up to $160 online. Also the book All About Electronic Percussion by Mike Snyder.
The Magazines: Modern Drummer, Sound On Sound, Electronic & Music Maker Magazine, International Recording Musician & Recording World, One Two Testing, Music Technology, and Digital Drummer were all very useful. I had a date by date timeline from the book collection, but these magazine reviews gave me context on what the drums were like to play, how the drum companies were doing, and whether or not the different drum sets were any good! A big thank you to www.muzines.co.uk for archiving many of the older, out of print magazines I mentioned. Instead of having to spend thousands of dollars to buy those magazines, I was able to read the digitized versions on that website. The most comprehensive magazine for electronic drum information was Modern Drummer. People lovingly covered anything from 1960 to 1989, and the internet really helps with anything from 2000 onward. But there’s a large information gap when it comes to 90s era electronic drums. So I went through about 35,000 pages of Modern Drummer Magazine to fill in different information gaps I had and to find advertisement photos. Digital Drummer Magazine has been a great resource. It began in 2010 and has been very detailed in its coverage of edrums.
Websites: HellFireDrums.com was very helpful in its coverage of edrum news as it happened from 2007 to 2014, reading through all the posts helped not forget certain kits, and nail down the dates. The Vdrums.com forum has helped me countless times over the years, including during the making of this video. Seeing chatter about upcoming edrum kits from about 2000 until today helped me nail down difficult to find information. Believe it or not, Facebook has helped out tremendously. The “about'' section of each company page usually contains a brief history of the company and a founding date. Plus going through posts from different companies lets me see when a new cymbal for drum set was introduced. I of course visited dozens of company websites to get official information of different releases, but many delete old press releases and no longer list their drum lines beyond a generation or two. I can’t forget the Wayback Machine from Internetarchive.com. This amazing tool lets you see websites from whatever year you want, it helped my research in this video.
People: I contacted various people work in electronic drum companies. Including Kat Inc, 2Box, Diamond Drums, Roland, and Bertesi.

That uncanny valley feeling of the 90s era of the transition from analog to digital is what I missed about it being a 90s kid. 80s kids are analog-y and 00s kids are tech savy now. 90s kids experienced the best of both worlds.

Great job A couple of comments as an owner of a few of these devices; The Korg WD-1 had positional sensing as did the Ddrum 3 and 4 The wavedrum Wd-1 was developed in cooperation with sequential circuits utilizing the prophet VS technology went korg had bought the remaining assets of SCI. It used what would become the wavestation synth aspects of merging wave tables of percussive sounds and acoustics mixed from the drumhead and rim as oscillators for the synth engine to process to output the sound. The logic of the WD-1 was that it was easier to develop the wave table synth engine for percussion before they made it into a full blown synth as percussive wave tables were smaller and could fit into the memory available at the time The Ddrum 4 was the Ddrum 3 lite eliminating the onboard sampler and only having the positional and pressure abilities on 4 of the 10 inputs (snare, bass, ride and high hat) there was a choke function on all the inputs using a piezo bending algorithm that would choke that trigger input Ddrum from day one used round robin playback of samples with the drum plate and Ddrum 1 having 4 voice, Ddrum 2 and AT having 16 and the Ddrum 3 and 4 having 64 The Ddrum Drum plate was sold to Emu for US distribution and was just a rebranded clavia device sold by emu ( Dave Rossum talks about this at length in his history of Emu). The SP1200 was the drum machine version of the emulator. The soundpacs for the EDrum, drum plate, Ddrum 1 are all compatible and you were able to have the EPROMs blown for the soundpacs by emu or Clavia at the time. The Ddrum 2 and AT were backwards comparable with the Ddrum and emu soundpacs The Ddrum 4 could have single layer sounds loaded into it via windows 98 pc software The encoding for all of ddrums samples were custom developed by clavia and are still difficult to re encode into a usable format the white papers were lost according to Benj by clavia when they moved away from drums to develop synthesizers and he had to start over when he left clavia to found 2box (thus the drum it 5 name, it is basically the Ddrum 5)

I remember the TD 10. Loved it. I was aware of the limitations of the electronics so I made myself a nice hybrid kit back in ‘98. I used the TD 10 rack, toms , module and bass drum, and I added a tama starclassic maple snare, and Zildyan cymbals. Easy to carry , light rack, and easy to mic up. Had a lot of fun with that kit.

"Uncanny valley" sums the 90s e-drum sounds in a nutshell. I have exactly the same problem with a lot of 90s/early 2000s keyboard sounds - particularly when they were trying to imitate orchestral instruments. In general, I think of the 90s as being a transitional decade when it comes to music technology. Great video though!

Hart Dynamics made Acoustic Drum Conversion trigger/mute inserts with lug-mounted jacks.. I played these out with my D4 and it was a decent budget setup for the time, although the inner jack wire plugs would pop out from vibration while playing..

I had already sold my Pearl DrumX an gone back to acoustic kits In the late 80s. I started again with a Yamaha DD11 drum pad machine. Then the DD12, then eventually progressed to a Yammy DTX2 rack mounted e kit.(2000's) Later on I got a Yammy DD55 as a back up for smaller venues. Never went back to acoustics after, the 8 piece Percussion Plus kit with 2 snares was sold yrs later (no longer needed).

00:18:04 I had those Mystique triggers ran through a Roland TD5 in the mid-'90s. They mounted inside the shell and positioned just a hair away from the head. A snake was supplied that mounted on the bass drum hoop (shown in the pic) to which the triggers were plugged in via 1/8th jacks. The snake cables then ran to your module of choice. I still have the snake and it's been useful in other e-drum applications. I completely muted the head with from foam and ended up positioning the trigger directly TOUCHING!! the head. lol I was young and foolish, though it worked satisfactorily.

Yeah electric drums prices were always insane and one reason I avoided them for so long. It wasn't until I discovered 65drums and Justin's mentioning of the used electric drum market that I jumped in, getting a Roland TD-1KV for $150. Been hooked since then!

Looking back, electronic drum prices are lower than they've ever been. I find that hard to believe but when you do the inflation calculator stuff, a decent beginner drumset now is cheaper than ones from the 80s/90s

What a great docu series! Very well done, Justin!! I love all your videos! I had the Roland TD-10 and was quite happy with it, altough the only disadvantage was that the cones underneath the drumheads didn't last very long. They had to be replaced very often. Today Roland uses a different material, so no problem anymore. Later i owned a TD-30 Set and today i play on a TD-50 Set. I am very happy with that, although compared to many VST Plug-Ins on the market today, i think Roland could still very much improof the sounds and samples! For me E-Drums have so much advantages over an acoustic drumset! I own a large Tama Starclassic Bubinga Drumkit, but i rarly use it. Most of the times it is simply too loud for smaller venues. Also rehearsing is much more comfortable with my V-Drums, specially for the rest of the band too and recording is very easy!

Another great video. So well researched and informative. I really enjoyed it. I think you might be interested to know that Future Man of the group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones plays what he calls the synthax drumitar. It's a synthax he modified into a percussion instrument. Back in the 90's he played full drumset parts on it. I don't know if he still does but I saw a recent b\video of him doing a sort of half acoustic half drumitar combo. If you can check out some videos of them from the 90's. You might find it interesting.

Not sure if anyone has chimed in here about the Ddrum3, but I'll add what I know from using it back in the 2000's. It was an old system then, but golly was it light years ahead. The biggest issue I guess was technology had not caught up, so chips, memory and all that stuff was super limiting and expensive, hence the massive price on it. Also e-cymbals were not really a consideration to an electronic drum system in the mid 90s so it deals mainly with drums only. But it did positional sensing really well. Also pressure sensing so mute or pitch bending could be applied to a sound. You could import your own multi sample via the spdif input. It was a little laborious but very effective. You had 16 layers to play with. That could be spread across the whole pad or split amongst the zones. After some toying around I made a multi sample of my 14 x 8 tama Atwood snare. 8 layers on the edge and 8 in the centre. I recorded playing the actual snare then the result from the multi sampling. The results were really hard to tell apart. I believe only 600 were made, so if you have one, that's a rare piece of edrum history you got!

as an owner of still working ddrumAT and ddrum4 modules - and I am biased - but I still think that they hold up against almost any current modules for drum sounds when pushed through some compression and reverb some of the cymbals sounds were good, like the Kenny Aronoff samples but most hi-hats were a disappointment - only 4 sounds (open, half open, closed and foot) so they are not very expressive but workable should make some videos one day..

In the 90's Reggae music hit its stride, And that's where electronic drums really sounded great. The drummers found one good kit sound and left it there. Just as an acoustic kit would deliver for the most part one sound.

My first kit was actually a Medeli manufactured kit (sold under different brand name, but it's Medeli). For the price of around $320 it had dual zone rubber pads all over, more than 1000 sounds onboard, possibility to create own kit by assigning sounds to each pad individually and tuning up or down and it sounded decently (snares were stereo samples with several dynamic levels, you could even do a convincing buzzroll with it, the rest was just single sample). For the price it was a great kit and it was only marred by not being really sturdy, some joints fell apart, the cymbal rubber unglued itself and I didn't find a glue that would hold. Now I have a TD-17K-L which is way better in terms of sounds, build quality and playability but it also costs almost 3x that much. I added one of the old Medeli pads to it so I can have an effects pad, works great and that way the old kit still lives on.

It won't change much the problem, but Dave SImmons didn't stop his activities in 1994 (as it used to be notified on wikipedia for a while). SoundUnit was still active till 1998 maybe early 1999 when Dave decided to close down the company. He was still supplying some new SDX systems and maintening them , whille trying to developp some other new products. the XRack never really sold , only a few units were made ( about 5 ^^ from what he said) He then disapeared for some years far from the E-Drums world.... Still use the ddrum3 in 2023. There's just nothing like it for live use. At home with headphones there are better alternatives.

My first electric kit was a Yamaha DTXpress II and the cymbal pads and sounds really sucked!

Yeah it wasn't the greatest line of drums out there, but it was pretty inexpensive at least

So I guess I purchased my Yamaha dtx 2.0 in 1998, I recall it was $1500. Does that sound correct?

Somehow, though the new Roland modules sound better than the original TD-10 they also still kind of sound the same....20+ years later.

00:38:58 I turned 20 in '91 and this is the first I've heard the '90s called cheesy. lol It seemed pretty serious and hardcore compared to the '80s. And, I LOVED the '80s.

I was born in the 90s. A lot of the pop music, windbreakers, fanny packs, hairstyles, and the advertisements just seem odd. Everyone in my generation thinks the 90s was cheesy. I like the decade though, lots of amazing stuff happened and it's fun to look back at it. Some of the music was iconic.

Most musicians in the 80s went overboard with the whole synth/electronic drum sound so music from the following decade naturally distanced itself from it. Hippie parents yuppie kids scenario.

Great series, but man... the 90s wasn't all cringe and cheeze dog. I mean - okay maybe in electronic drums and mainstream media it was, but there was some seriously good shizzzz going on in the underground. Yeah, no one got a participation trophy but the loser bracket made up the backbone of a thriving counter cultural movement that is more or less defunct today. But that's another story Cheers

Tons of good stuff happened in the 90s, I'm not here to dump on a whole decade. I'm just laying out the perspective people in my generation have about it. I was born in 94. I love looking back at that time.
