Eregion was the land of the Ring-crafters, the Elves who studied beneath Sauron under the guise of Annatar. It saw beauty and war, and was reduced to a land of ruins and memory. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on Eregion in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

There was an old game on the GameCube. LOTR: The Third Age. Now I know not to put stock in video games as canon sources for most fantasy settings. That being said... In the first chapter of the game, you pass through Eregion and get to see many of the Elven ruins. The woods are haunted, littered with statues and relics. I think the game did great tribute to this place and the lore.

I had it for the Gamecube. The amount of hours I've spent just wondering Eregion and especially Moria is insane. Rhey really did a great job at creating Middle Earth. Except the cheesy dialog from the film characters they just copy/pasted in haha. Especially Aragorns dialog was bad but it's the most immersive LOTR game I've ever played.

“But the Elves of this land were of a race strange to us of the silvan folk, and the trees and the grass do not now remember them: Only I hear the stones lament them: deep they delved us, fair they wrought us, high they builded us; but they are gone. They are gone. They sought the Havens long ago.”

Eregion is one of the most tragic parts of the history of Arda, really feel bad for Celebimbor and shudder to think of his fate and how he was used as a banner, in a gesture that was barbarism personified.

As a kid, i had a game called LOTR: the 3rd Age. It's a utrn based RPG, and it is not a very good game, but at the time, i played it happily. I bring it up because the first area of the game is Eregion, and even if the game itself isn't good, i found the landscape to be most appealing. Lush woodlands & rocky plains hide ruined elven structures of untold myth & lore. Along the way, you visit several ancient shrines to recover artifacts (on at the base of a waterfall, one in a Lothlorienesque tower, one in a ruined fortress, and one in a shrouded glen), rescue a Dunedain ranger in a mountain pass, defeat a troll to save his dwarf friend, and scale the cyranon reservoir to approach the doors of Durin, all while passing through varied fantasy forestland scenery along the way. Playing through it as an adult is a big letdown (mostly because it is not a good game), but the essence that i remember though my rose-tinted glasses still inspires me to this day, and makes the Eregion region among my favorite places in all Middle Earth.

Thank you for making these Yoystan! They're always so nicely put together. About Eregion? Yeah, that is an interesting region(...lol) of which I wish we knew more about. Besides Ost-in-Edhel and few snippets here and there, not much is known. And it'd seem that there is actually quite a lot of interesting stuff here. Just glossed over because Tolkien didn't seem to flesh out this part fully. But such is the fate of all the later chapters of Silmarillion. They're super condensed.

Glad to see Eregion covered! Only as you use screenshots from the game do I mention this, but Eregion is one of my favorite regions in LotRO. It raises my excitement to enter Moria, and still is it's own place. I learned to appreciate the holly bush, and see why it the area is called Hollin. Beleriand is under the waters. In Hollin I can see the sadness and fading of the Elves.

Eregion was always a mystery to me. Not its foundation or history, but its present by the time of the Third/early Fourth age. It's explicitly stated that it was empty but was still a fair and fertile land. Yet the Dunlending tribes nearby struggled with poor soil and marginal land for their herds. It might be to illustrate how scared non-Numenorean humans were of the elves, or the superstition that the land was cursed, but with Tolkien stating it wasn't cursed beyond the bad memory of its defeat, you'd think tribes would eventually settle there. Or if they feared it, that the Dunedain would make use of it. Or that goblins would inhabit it. Anything besides emptiness.

Its possible that the closer we get to the Third Age and the events of the Ring the Dunedain were far too few in number and scattered to properly settle the lands and hold them, when they were so close to the numerous threats in the area. Also if I remember correctly leading up to the war of the ring the Dunedain, especially under Aragorn's orders kept close watch of the Shire's borders and ensured its safety, which leads me to believe they really didn't have the manpower to settle those lands.

My thinking is that after Aragorns death and his sons rise to high king Eregion was claimed by him as part of the reunited kingdom. I think this because he has a genuine claim over the region since it was ruled by his grandfather and uncles before they left for the west. I think he’d see that if he didn’t claim the region it could become home to those who would desiccate it. I think it went that one of his sisters married a second son of Dunidine lord who’s family was rumoured to have elven heritage so would have greater respect for the region than even your standard dunidine. Knowing this he rose his sister husband to prince of Eregion knowing between his elven heritage and the fact his sister also had family ties to the region that it would be well looked after, I do believe he as high king would put some rules in place regard to protection of the elven history there but not much else.

"The world is changing..." Very interesting location in this world; a meeting place between races and the site of many battles. Makes me wonder what would have happened to the region had sauron never attacked and Dwarven doors never shut 🤔
@davepowder4020
@davepowder4020 2 жыл бұрын
If Sauron had never attacked, he wouldn't have recovered the 9 and 7 rings and we wouldn't have had Thorin Oakenshield's family have the urge, via one of the Dwarven rings, gather so much treasure under the Lonely Mountain, thus Smaug wouldn't have taken it and then been defeated later on. Then we'd have to live life without knowing how to sing "Far over, the Misty Mountains cold..." in public places to entertain or spook passerbys!
@istari0
@istari0 2 жыл бұрын
I think the only way the attack wouldn't have happened one way or another would be if at the end of the War of Wrath, Eönwë had taken Sauron prisoner and brought him back to Valinor. That would have rewritten the history of at least most of the 2nd and all of the 3rd Ages.
@istari0

@@Enerdhil On the other hand though, the elves lost a lot of their population in the War of the Elves and Sauron and the survivors were still slowly leaving Middle-Earth. I think it is as simple as there not being enough elves to rebuild and those who had lived there and remained in Middle-Earth simply chose to live in one of the other elven lands.

Eregion must have been populated by Men in the Fourth Age. After the Dwarves had recaptured Khazad-dûm, Men from Gondor would likely go there to set up a trading post. It would not be long before the trading post became a town, and then a city.

In the Unfinished Tales it is stated that "Celeborn and Galadriel therefore went eastwards, about the 700 of the Second Age, and established the (primarily but by no means solely) Noldorin realm of Eregion." This contradicts the information published in The Lord of the Rings which gives the founding of Eregion in the year 750. It is possible to reconcile the texts if 700 is seen as the year of their moving eastwards with 750 as the year of the foundation of Eregion; the canonicity of this, however, is unknown.

Interestingly enough, this area was settled by Noldor, Tolkien never attributes this to Galadriel who presumably first arrived and stayed there for some time, nor to Celebrimbor who came later to the area...so there must have been a large enough group of Noldor that chose the area to settle without lordship such that it was in Tolkien's mind.

In the Fourth Age of my world, Dunlanders repopulate Eregion after Silver and copper deposits are discovered. Trade reopens after Moria is retaken by the dwarves and some successful Men of Dunland join in the leaf weed plantation business. The Wild Men of Dunland keep their traditions and Melkor worship in their own lands. But are peaceful and have a strong influence in Thorabad and the two Kingdoms of Numenoreans.

I still don't totally get why Sauron gad to deplete himself to forge the One, but Celebimbor got to make the Three, and I guess the Seven and the Nine, for free. They could do some impressive things, but Celebimbor was no less after their forging. It sort of reminds me of how Feanor made the Silmarils, and the only seeming limitation had been components. Yada yada yada. Celebimbor is a cool character, and continues my trend of liking Tolkien Elves who take up crafting. His land was also neat, and it's a shame it never rose again, after it's heyday.
@muz9663
@muz9663 Жыл бұрын
You do realise Sauron helped Celebrimbor forge those rings and it took 90 years to do so? Also the one ring was different in terms of power, he poured evil into crafting the one ring which was not the case for those 19 other rings. Without the one ring, there wouldn't necessarily be evil lurking within those other rings, only power. Overall there was some different forging technique for the one ring, that's why it drained Sauron, unlike Celebrimbor forging the others
