Essendon and Carlton are the leagues most succesful clubs, with both teams holding the records for the most premiership wins with 16 each. These clubs naturally then have formed a formidable and heated rivalry, that stretches back to at least the 1940s, but intensified from the 1980s onwards with the ascendence of Kevin Sheedy.
