As a 6 year old American kid, I had never heard of Aussie Rules, but I still remember the hotel we were staying in had a new sports channel called ESPN, and I found this game on it. I don't remember much about it but I remember being thoroughly entertained and really liking the stripey uniforms.

That is very sad... As a Finnish person I can relate. We too were oppressed for more than 700 years and we could have very easily lost our language too, but thank god for nationalism and for the men who suffered for Finland to get it's indepence. Many languages that are related to finnish are also slowly dying, some having only maby 20 native speakers alive. My heart aches when I learn more about all the languages that are dying. English has and is replacing so many beautiful languages. I truly hope irish gets thought more even in some form.

We can blame the English or the education system and whatever other excuses people have but the fact is people are just lazy. I learned to speak Irish as an adult. It's not as difficult as many think and having 'school Irish' also helps. There are MANY cheap courses all over the country and online. There are also free resources online. This was the first game of footy I ever went to. I got into the MCG at about 8 am. I was 15 years old (but a very small lad) crammed into standing room. Thankfully a few fellow Magpie fans looked after me and ushered me up to the front so I could see. Standing room was so packed that guys were peeing into their beer cans rather than go to the toilet and run the risk of losing their position. Despite the heartbreaking loss I was thrilled to have seen the game and it ignited a passion for the game that has lasted a lifetime. But geez, those were the days.

Well the story now has an ending, the great man has passed away at the age of 87 a day after an instant classic between the two clubs he was most associated with. His legacy was tremendous and we'll never be forgotten for his impact.
