We take a look at the Jungle, Fossil, and Team Rocket expansion packs that followed up from Base Set, along with how a certain controversy almost put an end to the Pokémon franchise.

Got a weird feeling, that Pokémon and The Simpsons kind of share the same fate, they both exploded onto the scene in the 90’s then continued on without a clear end in sight. That also explains why I love Silver and Gold so much, if it was meant to be the end at one point.

I knew about the effects of the Porygon episode but I never realized the greater consequences it had on Pokemon as a whole. If what you said is true then perhaps Pokemon itself would've moved on after gold/silver. Or at least those games would've resembled the Spaceworld demo more

the amount of love and passion going into this rivals your past content from the old CFV days. Curious if you're going to expand this series in the direction of Duel Masters/YGO. Not so much CFV, as you covered that topic pretty extensively way back when and I feel like your own blog would end up being your primary source of information.

The sad thing about Porygon is that the episode was actually quite fun with its Tron-like setting... And obviously he was never translated on western television. Also the music is too loud at time but i just discovered this series and despite not knowing TCG at all it's quite fun !

What sucks is that if this didn’t happen with Pokémon, it would have happened with another show, and they likely didn’t have any way to know this would happen unless they had a doctor who specializes in neurological disorders on their team.

The part about the early metagame is historically correct, but nowadays we know they were wrong: haymaker was not the strongest avaible deck. Such a cool story

Crazy that the thing with the Porygon episode happened in '97, still a year before Pokemon had come to America. Now I'm just thinking about the possibility that Pokemon could've been finished before it ever came over to the West. Which means my childhood would've turned out VERY differently.

I have to wonder, how much were the game devs thinking about balance at this time?

What music you used for this?

Jungle sequence uses "River" from Pokemon Snap, Fossil uses HappyDragonite's reorchestration of "Valley" from the same game, the Team Rocket section uses "GR Challenge Cup" from Pokemon Card GB2, the Porygon Shock section uses Rexfire91's remaster of "Inescapable Fate" from Fire Emblem 7, and the Pikachu march clip uses Gustav Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" provided by Musopen. The music credits for this series is provided at the end of each chapter, so the Pokemon music is credited in the final Pokemon video, and the Monster Collection music at the end of the Mon Colle videos.
