That's why we don't get Monster Hunter Dos and many others in Occident : Monster Hunter was rough and reserved to a certain niche and community of players. They only gave us the polished versions of the games, we don't even get Monster Hunter portable 3. So yeah, it thrives in Japan but barely survives in Occident, until today.

When me and some classmates started with MH Freedom back then, what impressed us the most was that every armor piece is visible on the character. In most other games at that time you just equip an armor and a weapon and everything else like accessory is only visible in the stats menu. But here every single piece you grind for shows on your char and they all were very unique and represented the materials used. It made farming feel really rewarding.

7:59 and to this day, because I started out with this first game, I still change R2/RT/ZR to run and L2/LT/ZL to change items whenever it is possible for any of the newer games. I was able to adapt to the face buttons changes and use X/B/A to dodge and triangle+circle/X+A/Y+B to attack, but I just could never use L1/R1/LB/RB/L/R for item swapping and running, it just feels so wrong to me. Great video and series, by the way, man! It reminded me of why I fell in love with this series back in the day and was the only one of my friends back then that stuck with it. Generations Ultimate on the Switch and XX on the 3DS are the same game, the only difference is the higher resolution on the Switch version (Generations Ultimate). There is actually a private server for both MH1 and MHG, if there are any full on Monster Hunter fans out there that want to experience those games fully, I highly recommend checking it out, i've had lots of fun playing through the two games with friends even with the clunky old mechanics, you do get used to it pretty quickly anyway. Also there are a few things that are incorrect in this video, a lot of things you mentioned are the same as all or almost all other games excluding World, there are gestures in MH1 (and every MH gane) but they were only accessible online in MH1 and MHG, it was also impossible to capture a monster outside of a capture quest as tranq bombs are account items only in 1st Gen

One thing I need to add is that to this day, capturing in a kill quest will result in a failed quest. It's not really relevant as usually only elders have kill quests but Raging Brachy is a kill quest and if you trap him (which you can't do accidentally as you need to prepare for it with a cheese) you will fail the quest.

I loved MH1 used to rinse it out didnt even have online bk then as it was hard to get the PS2 online at that time in the UK. I bought it again when it ported to PSP, i even went to the trouble of buying two more PSPs for my bros so we could all play 3-players together and we did for a while until one of them went in the Army and we kind of lost touch for a while cause they were doing their own things. I luv how you're playing the MH menu and village music in the bkground, im just whistling the tunes (cause i know them inside out), while im watching your video.

I can sort of speak about the original ps2. The only other game that it was compared to, at the time, was Phantasy Star Online because the two was quite similar. We only fought Fatalis with heavy bowgun and used Clust2 because he stayed in the air far too long for melee. Green sharpness is the best we got at the time, and we bounced like crazy if we melees Fatalis. Firestone runs was a thing. We would go into a quest naked and with only pick axes. There was no quest that would let us gather like later games. So what we did was go into a volcano quest, gather as much firestone as we could, and suicide. Firestone was used for one of the best weapon in the game, Red Dragonsword. Plate runs was similar to Firestone runs. We go into a double rath quest, cut the tail off (headlocking needed here) carve it and either abandon if no plate or suicide if there is plate. Plates are used for the best weapon and armors in the game.

I got it again to play online with a friend. And that was seriously something special. The game was like no other. To me it seriously felt like I was playing a survival game of some sort. And players grouped to bassicly stay alive lol and the community was insane. I swear most of us legit thought we were in some sort of MH universe. Almost to a point where people would have like families on there loll but over all the game was great. I kind of wish they bring some of that core survival back. Killing a small raptor and making its armor was a huge achievement all in itself. I'm really glad the game is now on all platforms. For many new people to enjoy! Long live MH!

@2:25 While Monster Hunter has the hub/quest system and looter game and was way ahead of anything we have now it's not rally the origin of them. Phantasy Star Online which came out in Dec 2000 would be the first especially for console. MH was still early out the door too.

I was actually talking with a friend the other day that is new to the series and explained that expeditions were not a thing. You had to actually queue a quest to get materials. Specific gathering quests used to be a thing. :)

Level cap for online play was 99 plus gunners and blade masters have separate armor.the original monster hunter had a cheese stunlock with the lance..you poke the head 3 times side step and do it again and monsters would flinch, rinse and repeat.

I remember a few years back I'd watch videos on MH and I really wanted to pick it up. I didn't know which to start with so I went with the very first one and boy is it rough. I have no idea how it became popular at all considering the learning curve. It quite literally throws you with a weapon and into the forest saying "GOOD LUCK!" I got discouraged and dropped it but my desire to play was so strong so I looked into some of the newer ones. I picked up 3 Ultimate on the WiiU and never looked back. The game was kind of already dead by the time I picked it up as it was when 4U was out and Generations was creeping in. Either way, I loved 3U and it's underwater combat jank. I've been a fan since.

I remember playing this game in 04 and wondering wth network play was and why I couldn't play it. Saw the game was multi-player but my cousin and I couldn't figure out how to get it to split screen. We just figured you had to unlock it by playing more. Home internet was not too common.

I was looking for this comment! I always thought PSO really created this type of genre with Monster Hunter being Capcom’s take on it. There are so many similarities between the two. PSO had Mags and MH had Palico’s. PSO had those red item drops you had to take to a vendor to appraise and MH had rust stones. I love what Capcom has done with the series but I always give praises to the OG PSO.

I miss the first game man, thems were the days. Fighting Fatalis was the biggest thrill. Couldn't even use melee on him cause everything bounced off, and you got 1 shot by everything. It was pure skill and prep. No set bonuses and gems and all that nonsense. Hoping that Fata drops for world and that they bring back some of the old challenge.

Man that thing was so bullshit back then. Ended up getting sword saint piercing for my eternal schisms just to not deflect cuz standing under his chest was suicide. And that thick sweet spot on his tail that didn't deflect was also insta KO the moment he dropped on all fours or just twitched it. But yeah, for how unimpressive freedom fatalis is compared to all subsequent monsters in terms of supernatural abilities and flashy moves, he definitely kept you on full alert throughout. Only other monster I personally put on the same impression pedestal would be amatsu cuz while he had an instakill and a high damage signature move, least he didn't twitch you to death so there were plenty opportunities to just go ham. Also, the arena and theme changing as you fought to phase 2 and the subsequent quest clear theme and skies clearing out really felt awesome, something that similarly happens with shagaru but just not on the same scale or to the same effect.
