RPGs have been around for a long time, but how were they created? What is their origin? This series is going to look at how the Role Playing Game genre was formed. We're going to look at the people and games that influenced the genre, starting in the 1970s up until today.
This 1980s episode is the second in the series, so if you haven’t seen the History of RPGs 1970s video, you may want to check that out first. It examines the very first RPGs ever made, and how they set the foundation for generations of RPGs to follow. Check out the link below.
This is only part in the series. If you liked this, make sure you sub for History of RPGs 90s, coming soon.

KZfaq recommended this to me less than 1 minute after it was uploaded. Nice to see the algorithm making proper suggestions based on viewing habits. Keep the series up. Love this sort of historical stuff.

Born in 1985 here. My first RPG was the first Final Fantasy but the first RPG I completed was the first Dragon Quest (Warrior). Didn't get to play them until about 1992 though. For non-turn-based though, the first two Zeldas, Star Tropics and Legacy of the Wizard, which I only found out last year (after becoming a huge Trails fan) is an actual Falcom Legend of Heroes game! Still have the box, manual and all. 😃 After the NES, my next console was the Sega Genesis so Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force were my next loves. Then moved on to PSX and have been riding the wave that was the boom of JRPGs since. ❤️

My very first RPG was Startropics. Both of those games began my excitement for Role Playing Games, heading to the Chrono games, Legend of Dragoon, Radiant Historia, and the usual popular ones of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest/Warriors. I do like to experience Ultima someday.

If you try Ultima, get the PC originals(Console versions are completely different games.). Use mods like Exult. The most accessible versions of Ultima are Ultima V and VI remade in Dungeon siege(originally a hack'n slash game.). Called 'Ultima V Lazarus' and 'the Ultima 6 project'. I suggest starting with those. You could also play the original Ultima VI, it's not as out of date as the original Ultima 1-5 are. Then Ultima VII, Ultima adventures(Savage empire & martian dreams) and Ultima Underworld series. The Ultima games are NOT the first western made RPGs I'd recommend though. The Dungeon Siege remakes are somewhat accessible but you'd be better off being many RPGs in before trying the originals. Anyone who already has trouble playing Baldur's gate, is going to have more trouble with Ultima.

but fails to mention the greatest/most popular systems of the 80s? being the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Atari 400/800/XL which all had a ton of superb rpgs which pushed the genre forward. *facepalm*

I wasn't even born until the late 90's, so my experience with RPGs is mostly based on games that came out in the 2000's. I have gone back and played through the big classics though, like Chrono Trigger, Earthbound and FFVI.

Did you know that Squaresoft was the American arm of Square? In Japan, they were just identified as Square. I found that out the other day when doing some research on the first Final Fantasy title.

I played some of the original Zelda back in the 80s. As a young kid I was confused about it. I didn’t know where to go or what to do and I died a ton and rebooted the game when I got “stuck” in the lost woods. It actually turned me off of the genre for 10 years. Then Super Mario RPG came out and I decided to give the genre another go. Mario RPG completely changed my mind on the genre. I loved it and was happy to eventually beat it. My next JRPG was FF7 and that blew me away and I have loved the genre ever since!

I find it truly mind blowing that you fail to mention systems like the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Atari 800 which utterly dominated the early to min 80's and had literally 100's of superb rpgs. wow.. I'm truly shocked

The goal of this video was to look at the most significant RPGs of the 80s that helped shaped the genre. Sure, there were loads of other RPGs released in the 80s that I didn't mention, but they didn't have the impact that the bigger names did. This video would have been far too long had I discussed every RPG of that time period.

Tonnes of games he should saying something about, what happened to the mid and late 80s? Wizardry was hardly the 'dominant' force in RPGs in 1985-1990, let alone the most revolutionary titles at that time.

This is more 'the history of JRPGs' than history of RPGs and a lot of the things said are only true when just considering JRPGs in isolation and ignoring anything happening in the West(including much of what you said about western made RPGs). I probably won't watch the third part as I imagine it will completely exclude any western made RPGs or do no more in actually covering them than this part.
