Hey Mr. Derek before I leave your class I’d like to share something with you. My dad worked for Digital Equipment Corporation throughout the 70s and 80s. In the early 80s I have memories of playing outside his office door at home while he used his Digital VT100, the very computer you are seeing here. I know we were one of the first people to actually have a computer in our home at the time. But obviously my dad used it for work 95% of the time. The rest of the time I think my dad used it for write stuff to print out on paper and I do vaguely remember him having a game or two on there. But I have no clue what those games were back then as I was too young and wasn’t exactly allowed to even touch the computer. I was allowed to watch my dad work at times when he needed to at home. So I sat quietly in a chair next to him watching it navigate menus and type things and be entertained by it. And when the computer was off and he was away I would pretend to do stuff on it with the keyboard and such. It paved the path for me to work with computers as an adult today.

As a gradeschooler in the early 90s I played hours of The Oregon Trail which come to find out was produced in 1974. I beat The Oregon trail. I used to play a bunch of windows 3.1 super nintendo and sega genesis back in the day, but educational games were pivotal to getting me addicted.

This was cool. I always enjoy learning about things such as this. I was born in 1980, I didn’t have a computer as a child but I believe my first computer game was playing Oregon Trail in elementary school. Then some Apple game involving dropping a man into a hay cart from a helicopter. Had a friend in the 8th grade with a home computer and we’d play Myst and Wolfenstein. But Rpgs quickly became my gaming preference and started with Dragon Warrior, then Final Fantasy on nes. It was Final Fantasy II on SNES that solidified my love for them.

Those early games are what opened my imagination as a five or six year old. I vividly recall Temple of Apshai and how tough it was! I also put endless hours into Rogue. I hope you’ll cover The Castle Adventure from the 80’s. I played a lot of it too. Looking sharp also, Professor Derek!

This is some wonderful, wonderful stuff. I feel a little bad for the Plato administrators, they were just doing their job, but they ended up deleting important parts of an entire medium's history. It's amazing how the chain of inspiration keeps flowing, from Tolkien's work to D&D all the way up to the huge adventures we have today

Ahh the Star Trek text game. I've always loved that game. I remember playing a DOS Port of it when I was a kid. It was the first game I ever played where I felt like I was actually playing as the captain instead of playing as the helmsman when I was supposed to be the captain. I played Akalebeth and Wizardry I when I was a teenager but by then I had already played multiple Ultima games, and later Wizardry games.

There are actually a few examples of rougelikes that pre-date Rogue such as Beneath Apple Manor although they tend to be more primitive and didn't codify the roguelike genre like Rogue did.

Ultima III: Exodus on the Apple II some time in the mid 1980s was my first RPG. Between then and the early 90s, I played a lot of the SSI Gold Box D&D RPGs, including the most excellent Dark Sun cRPG.

I started playing dungeons and dragons in early 80s, my Father bought a IBM 5150 and my first RPG was called Zork, it was an amazing game, you collected items, fought off a thief, a really great game. Cutthroats was the next one I played. The first console RPG I played was Might and Magic Gates to Another World on Sega Genesis in 1991. Cutthroats is an interactive fiction computer game written by Michael Berlyn and Jerry Wolper and was published by Infocom in 1984.[1] It was released for the Amiga, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, TRS-80, TI-99/4A, and Macintosh. It is Infocom's thirteenth game.

My very first rpg was shining force 2, and after that final fantasy 7.

Yas, Professor Derek is back I really enjoy this series of videos! The earliest RPG that I've played was Final Fantasy for the NES, but my first RPG was Pokemon Red for the Game Boy. My mother taught me the word obsessed while I was playing that game, then asked me to go and play with my siblings.

This makes me think of my dad. Think he had a computer my entire life and would tell me & my brother about such topics. Would be nice to talk to him about early computer games again because I didn't absorb a lot as a child. I'm actually not sure what my first game would be, he had quite a few and played some as a family.

Looks like Temple of Apshai was not released for the Apple II in 1979, but in 1980, same year as for the Atari800. It was released in 1979 for the TRS-80 and Commodore PET.

The first RPG I played was on Atari the game Adventure, having to Traverse a maze to find a grail and slay a dragon. I played it on a black and white TV too.

I would say this is very . . . classy!

My first RPG was Chrono Trigger, imagine that! The first one already a masterpiece, I never recovered from that day and was difficult to me to accept others RPGs since CT was such monumental...

Looking sharp, there. I like the facial hair, too. You really look like a professor. Anyway, I do recall playing games on the old IBM, and we used to have text adventure games. Unfortunately, I can't remember which ones they were, but my dad used to play them. I grew up with the IBM PC, then transitioned to Windows from there. It's been a long time, but those were good times.

The oldest RPG I've played is probably Rogue, but the oldest one I've beaten was actually a port of Hydlide to NES. :)

the first RPG i "Saw" was the original Final Fantasy the father of a friend was playing. i was not allowed to play or touch the game (for obvious reasons found out in the future AKA 1 save file) but the 1st RPG i actually got to play was Dragon Warrior. i still remember i had no clue what saving was or what i was even supposed to do so i went out of the castle and just walked as far as i could untill i was in a zone where stuff 1 shot me and back to the castle i went for a rinse and repeat.

Nice start and looking sharp! What is the oldest RPG you own yourself? I got into RPGs fairly late (started playing games around 1989), partly since I couldn't really speak or read english well until around 1994-1995. The first I saw played were Phantasy Star 1 and Zelda 2, and the first I played properly was probably Ultima 8. Some time after that I bought and played Secret of Evermore, Diablo and FF7. I think I played some of those choose your own adventure books like way of the tiger and falcon before U8, which were translated and had RPG-like mechanics.

i think oldest rpg i have played is FF5 as for western it was Baldurs Gate 1

Earliest rpg ever played? Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Cloudy Mountain on the Intellivision.

My first RPG was Ultima on my cousin's Apple IIe. Too bad the thing was always broken. I didn't get to play as much as I wanted. My other cousin's Atari 130xe was much more reliable (and generally better in every conceivable way), but I don;t remember playing any RPGs on it. I think the first RPG I played on a system that I actually owned was Crystalis on the NES.

My first RPG is Chrono Trigger in SNES. Borrow from my cousin who never play it. From there I got addicted to RPG to the point 90% games I play now is RPG.

First RPG I played was Pokemon Yellow and then Gold. First real RPG was Golden Sun on the GBA.

I am a failed RPG player. I tried playing and loving rpg video games a couple times long ago, but the random constant battles and high difficulty of the games I tried turned me away from the genre. I am willing to try it again now. Which games would you guys recommend to entice someone new to RPGs? It should be an easy, but fun to play game. Any suggestions?

If Oregon Trail is considered an RPG, then that's the earliest one I've played. The earliest one I've beaten is the original Final Fantasy for NES.

The Oldest "looking" RPG i played was an intelevision game. I was the most primitive rpg i ever saw. It looked worse than some of the game you shown in this video.
