For today's video we are going over the history of the early Dodge Daytona! The Daytona nameplate was first used for the Charger in 1969, then again for the 1975-77 Chargers, and returned later for the 1984-1993 Dodge Daytona sports coupe. Watch along as we go over all the details of each one of these historic vehicles!

Great video. The TIII powered Iroc R/T Daytona's packed 225 hp and were stellar performers. I used to own one and am now restoring a TIII powered Spirit R/T

Great video. I had a 91 Daytona ES 2.5 L. Black on black. I loved that car. I had it for 19 years. It was an every day driver and never had any problems with it. Best car I ever owned. Ended up selling it because my wife wanted me to get a four-door. So I got an 07 charger RT 5.7. Should have got the Daytona version of that but it was too much money!

My friend's father bought one of the first Daytona turbo z in Jacksonville in 1983. Garnett red over silver. I loved watching the boost gauge react to his right foot going from boost to vacuum. It had a nice exhaust sound, too. I loved the seats and the leather felt great. The talking computer was quite neat, too. Always saying "thank you" after you removed the key from the ignition, etc. He kept it for over 200,000 miles before giving it to his stepson. Unfortunately I never got to drive it since we moved before I turned 16. The 1990 interior refresh turned me off so I bought a Honda Accord that year.

The TIII also used a Lotus designed 16 valve head, pushing the hp to 225. It was used first in the 91 Spirt R/T and then in the 92/93 IROC Daytona. I purchased an 89 Shelby Daytona new in 89, totaled it in an accident in 92”, replaced it shortly later with another 89 Shelby Daytona that I still have today!

The fender "scoops "were called scoops to get past nascar. They in fact did not open into the engine compartment but into the wheel wells to relieve air buffeting causing the front end lifting and losing steering control.

The 80s FWD Turbo Daytonas are my favorite. I graduated High School in 85, so those are the cars of my generation. For me growing up in the 80 was a blast. Turbo Mopars where littering the streets back then. I love them all but the Daytona is my favorite. I purchased a silver 86 base model with the n/a 2.5 with 5-speed. I traded it in 89 for a red 1989 Daytona C/S Competition package. It was a present to myself for my 21 birthday. I have her to this day, my baby! Plan on passing her on in the family, but never selling.

I love the Charger Daytona with the big wing in the back, dunno why they bring it back or modernise it I would love to see a Dodge Charger or Challenger Daytona with a Hellcat engine in it, that would be beast
@poly_g6068
@poly_g6068 3 жыл бұрын
It would also be really, really fast. Much faster than the Hellcats even... Especially with the low drag coefficient. A modern day Daytona with the nose and wing would easily top 230mph just from the modern advancements in aerodynamics alone.

I’ve had 2 of the fwd Daytona’s now. An 88 Turbo I car that was very problematic and rusted underneath pretty badly. I later got a 90 V6 car that I loved and it was very reliable and I miss it everyday. I’m on the hunt for another V6 5-speed car. Hard to find a decent one now.

I had an 89 Shelby Daytona in high school. Long after I sold it, I found it was 1 of 157 built that year in silver with red interior, but then it was long gone. My neighbor up the street has a late 70s charger Daytona in red that he has tried to sell several times with no luck. He also has a Dodge Warlock, Plymouth Trailduster, and a Lil Red Express. Shelby did return to Dodge in the late 90s, producing the rare Shelby Durango. Chrysler did sell a kit to covert Dodge Daytonas to v8 RWD. However it was intended to be for drag racing, though a few made it to the street. It came with a k-member with v8 motor mounts, instructions to modify the floor pan to create a trans tunnel, a shortened driveshaft, and a kit to install a live axle in the rear along with all required suspension parts. You basically only needed to source a small block , a narrowed rear, and a trans to complete the conversion.

When I was a little kid my sister's boyfriend had a brand new 1987 Daytona Pacifica. It was that same color red as in all those promo pix. It was a really cool car But It was extremely troublesome for a brand new car. I remember Him telling me that the car was full of electronic gremlins and being a dumb little kid I took that literally lol. He got rid of it after only 2 years because it was so problematic. Ironically I moved to Daytona Beach to go to school in the early 2000s. If I'm from I remember making a joke about the Dodge Daytona to one of my friends who looked at me puzzled. She said that she had never heard of a car Named after Daytona. I told her I would point went out to her if we saw one but even by that time they were long gone. In the North East they were mostly eaten up by rust and body rot and in the South east the poorly made 2.2L Engines usually blue their head gaskets too easily especially when text with the Turbo. They didn't do very well in the heat Down here. They were cool looking though and I would love to come across one in person again.

Bro Mexico got the good stuff down there... I legit saw a Stratus R/T sedan parked next to a barber shop. That had me confused because I thought the Stratus R/T only came as a coupe. Then I saw the Mexican plates and to top it all off, the damn thing had a turbo badge on it. I researched the car and would you know it, Mexico had the 2.4 Turbo in the Status. Same one from the PT Cruiser GT and Neon SRT-4. If that ain't cool I don't know what is... and also, apparently they also got the 90s Ram Chargers, 80s Magnums and Dodge Phantom Turbos. Dodge and Chrysler treat Mexico's market much more different than the U.S. seeing as how they still offered models over there that were discontinued in the U.S. At this point you should do stuff that talk about special Mexican Mopars.
@MarspeedCars
@MarspeedCars 3 жыл бұрын

The 75-77 Chargers were poorly manufactured. Chrysler used a putty to secure the taillight lenses to the car. When it would get hot outside, the putty would soften and the taillight lens would often fall off while going down the road. Since these lenses weren't cheap to replace, I know of instances where the lenses were stolen while the car was sitting in the parking lot. My dad eventually drilled holes into the lenses and the car to secure them after numerous replacements.

They had the option of moving to the the R/T concept AWD Wide body, in 1990. More regrets. One thing that bothered me was that when people saw my 1987 Shelby, the first question was, Is it a V6 or V8? and their facial expression when I told them it was a turbo four. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZ2Jf6yHq8iaZqM.html&ab_channel=CONCEPTCAR
