Had a deposit on this same exact car when it was new and at the last minute ended up going with a new Escort GT to "keep the peace" within family. Always regretted not getting the Daytona Shelby. BTW....when the brand new Escort GT developed repeat problems shortly after purchasing it, family didn't want to get involved with me bringing it in & complaining it was a hunk of ____!

This particular edition had 175 hp, but I had 1 in the Army and was a mechanic in the Army. All my buddies in my unit had various go fast cars at the time also from Mustangs, Iroc Camaros to Starions. But this Shelby could be tweaked to put out up to 300 hp with the right mods. I tweaked mine to around 230hp and it beat everything back then except the Grand national & Syclone truck.

Depending on the Engine, they made a 2.5 Turbo as well 150 HP they made a High Torque version that had around 210Lb Ft. Up from the 175 that was in the normal 2.2 Turbo.

Outstanding little Dodge! Love the colors inside and out and it sounded healthy for a single exhaust and a four cylinder. That 2.5 litre was a great engine a take off from the previous 2.2 litre which I had both of. I had a 1991 Plymouth Acclaim with the motor this has and it was a great peppy motor. It ideled smoother than the 2.2. He had a awesome little machine there! Love the options too! T.tops or a sunroof would really set that off! I like it a lot. Thanks for sharing this with us Lou!!

If you've never ridden in one of these, you'd be damn surprised how fast they actually are. My friend had 1990 in a 5 speed that would pin you to the seat. He went to Abilene, Texas to buy it in 1993. I had just gotten home from work, 5:15pm. I wanted to see how the car buying went, so I called him at 530 at his mothers house. He was a few minutes away from pulling out of her driveway. At 6:40PM he pulled into the parking lot of our apartments in Arlington, Texas. 1hr and 10 minutes, 150 miles.

Deadpan delivery from the owner belies genuine enthusiasm for his car. The lowly power output was a surprise and is at odds with the words “Shelby”, “Turbo” and “Dodge”, but I’m betting it goes well enough when the turbo kicks in. Thanks for showing a car I’ve never seen before.

I absolutely loved this generation Daytonas with the hidden headlights! I was in high school during these years and I had a friend who had one of these. The Carroll Shelby option package was seriously expensive compared to the regular Daytona. They did have a Daytona Z that looked similar but WITHOUT the turbo if I'm not mistaken. I love when an owner restored a car that others would consider not worthy. I wish I had one of these cars. Honestly when was the last time you saw one of these cars on the road? What 15 years? They are rare.

Haha the memories. My sister had the standard Daytona in high school. It was an 89. Brown in color. It had the run of the mill Chrysler K 2.5. It was a decent car, did its job. We used to laugh and say the car looked like it hated life when the headlights were in the popped open position. Between the front fascia "frown", and the design of the headlight doors (which gave the impression the vehicle was looking at the ground), the car looked depressed! 😂 She had it for several years into college before she wrecked it in NJ.

In 91 my dad was in the market for a Shelby Daytona 5 speed in black. Couldn't find 1. Loads of ES's and V6s with autos or turbo 1s. He finally got frustrated and special ordered a black on grey 92 Shelby Iroc turbo 2.5 5 speed , which took 7 months! to be delivered. This was right before they released the rare R/T. That 92 was a surprisingly good car with only the radio going out, otherwise just routine maintenance. He got rid of it after ten yrs and rust started to creep in. The featured car is really nice! Most were just abused and thrown away, Shelby name or not.

As I've said before, my dad worked for Chrysler. This video inspired me to take another look at this car. I was eager to see what Chrysler would come up with on this car's debut. I was disappointed at that time because it looked too K-car like and including the dashboard which I didn't find sports car-like. I really like the 1992 Iroc Daytona with it's rounded door windows. The taillights were rounded too. Last but not least, the engine bay gets a nice red accented intercooled Turbo.

@@andyhamilton8940 I don't know why they dropped the turbo 2 in 1991. I've heard it said that they were planning to use the 16 valve turbo 3 and it wasn't ready for prime time. I sure wish you could have gotten a turbo 3 in a Daytona before they dropped the pop up headlights in favor of the uglier fixed headlights. If I'd have know then what I know now, I wouldn't have traded my Daytona and just converted it to turbo 2.

What a nice looking car. The only reason I opted for the ‘90 Mustang GT was because it had more HP than the ‘90 Daytona Shelby. But the interior of the Daytona is just so much better than the Mustang. “Works for me”.

One of my friends who worked in Prudho Bay AK bought one of these and he was notorious for killing cars. well it came with a hell of a warrenty and of course he beat the hell out of it but the only thing that broke was the rear end. Over and over until they quit fixing it hahaha. He got rid of it after that but it was a fun car.

That Daytona is in great shape! The red and black interior is pretty sweet. Does anybody know where to find interior and exterior parts to restore one of these things? I have a '91 ES in blue with a grey interior, V6, and 5 speed manual. It looks decent, but it needs some restoration. It's in great shape mechanically, especially since I replaced everything to do with engine mounting, suspension, brakes, ignition and fuel in the past few years lol. Super fun car though. Strong mid-range torque, great handling, impressive brakes (all discs), great transmission, and the most comfortable seats I've ever been in

They also had a 140hp V6, the Shelby Daytona was 175hp and it was a guaranteed 140mph car. Now the bad thing with these Shelby Daytonas was if you overheated it, it would blow the head gaskets. A truely wonderful car. This and the Ford Probe LX w/ the 3.8L V6 are the 2 of a few cars from the late 80s and early 90s that I wished I could own today. Aye next find a gen 1 Probe LX for a video, you might like the car

The 3.0 was a new option for Shelbys, and for 91 you could get 1 in a stick too. The turbo 1, 2.5L replaced the 2.2L turbo 2 if you wanted an automatic turbo car. That brought you down to 150hp 180 lb/ft.

The entire in the 1980s and early 1990s the word crap Was spelled with Precise title but the letters K. The Dodge Daytona/Chrysler laser Where parenthesis the and reliable And over complicated Chrysler K cars. When I was a little kid my much older sister had a boyfriend with a brand new Dodge Daytona Shelby. It looked exactly like this 1. Even when it was brand new there was always something electronically wrong with the Car. One of the most dangerous things it Would do Is suddenly lock up the brakes while driving CA at highway speeds. It was an issue that apparently happened quite frequently but Chrysler never had a fix for it.
