As always, I recommend you checking this doc if you want some clarification (notably on events who had *), or if you want the list of sources I used: docs.google.com/document/d/1FSHLIusnHGm6SyL3BsZc_ma2oILI-uM5FHdiYaGNxBE Small notable mistake I made: At 6:09, I said Naresuan declared its independence from Burmese rule which is wrong. Naresuan was not yet king of Ayutthaya and was only the heir at the time, it was his father, still king until 1590 that declared Siam's independence. The confusion comes from that Naresuan was still deeply involved in the fighting against Taungoo when he was still heir (Naresuan was leading Ayutthayan's levies supposed to help Nanda Bayin in putting down the Avan rebellion but actually refused to participate) and when doing the pop-ups, I kinda forgot that he wasn't necessarily king at the time. Another mistake is regarding "Lan Na" revolt from Toungoo in 1727, it is actually Chiang Mai (and the Ping river valley, so Lamphun and then following the river down south to the border with Ayutthaya as well), that revolted and the Chiang Saen Burmese garrison actually maintained order in the other part of Lan Na (so Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phrae, Nan, etc.). The mistake comes from a poor reading of mine resulting in confusion, as often in sources for this region, kingdoms are referred with their capital's name, and therefor, I read "Chiang Mai" as Lan Na (and then poorly read the information about Chiang Saen garrison "only defending that city, when in fact, it contained the rebellion to the Ping river valley). Very sorry for this mistake, it's all on my hand! Here are some important and more general notes: -I didn't show subjects for the sake of the clarity of the video and mainly due to the nature of the government (being the "mandala system", which you can draw a comparison to European feudalism), where pretty much everything was a vassal, and thus showing Lan Na as a subject in 1570, but not Ava, for example, is inconsistant since both had similar autonomy. -As you can see borders are often vague and follow natural boundaries (rivers and mountain range), and it is for the simple reason that borders in South-East Asia back then were anything but a well established line. In fact, the fact that borders were this vague is the cause of the dispute of Dawei between Toungoo and Ayutthaya during the reign of Tabinshwehti for example. Thus, this is why I showed cities/forts to help you see at least which cities/town/fort were part of each state at a date. -I used "Vr.Toungoo" in the pop ups to refer the local king of Toungoo(owning the city of the same name), even when he was indeed an independent king in a kingdom, to distinguish him from Nanda Bayin, Nyaungyan or Aneukpetlun who were the top king of the "Toungoo Empire". On that note, "Kingdom of Toungoo" isn't much of an official term either, you can find people calling it "kingdom of Ava" after Nyaungyan restoration, "Burmese-Hanthawaddy Empire" or "Pegu" under Tabinshwehti, Bayinnaung and Nanda Bayin, "Kingdom of Burma" more generally, etc... I also used Siam and Ayutthaya interchangeably in the video for the sake of simplicity and short text. -The Kingdom of Mrauk-U (Arakan) was independent and is only show in the late 1590s/early 1600s for his involvement in lower Burma. As well as any entity precised (if Prome is shown with a separate colour for example, it means its ruler is independent, although a lot of them are often related, brothers, cousins, etc...)

Just a small note, at 6:09 Naresuan was still a crown prince at this time, his father Maha Thammaracha ruled Ayutthaya (until his death where he was seceded by Naresuan on c. June 30, 1590 (from Wikipedia))). Excellent video.
@FormosaHistory
@FormosaHistory 2 жыл бұрын
You are indeed very much correct. Since I made the research for this video much before actually doing those pop-ups, I made the confusion that Naresuan was ruler of Siam due him still being deeply involved in the fighting with Taungoo, by leading armies notably, even when he was only the heir of the kingdom of Ayutthaya. Thanks for pointing it out!
