The first same-sex marriage in the United States is 2 decades old today! Celebrations are most definitely due 🥂🥳
Admittedly there was a little legal back and forth there… 🙃 But considering that LGBTQ+ people have been around forever and some countries don’t yet even recognise our existence, let us too think of them today while we celebrate this milestone. Here’s to hoping one day we can all celebrate together 🏳️‍🌈❤️
Do you remember where you were when same-sex marriage was legalised in your home country (if it has been)…? 🌍💍

This is of course the first legally recognized same sex marriage. same sex marriages and unions existed for native peoples before the US was colonized.

@@antoniaalabama2234i have found a paper that addresses samesex relationships in both pre-columbian north america and "modern" day(2006). It's called: "Two Spirits, Two Eras, Same Sex: F as, Same Sex: For a Traditionalist P aditionalist Perspectiv erspective on Native American Tribal Same-Sex Marriage Policy", and is written by Jeffrey S. Most of the people do, but the legislators are generally a bunch of stuffy old white men who had the money to make a good campaign. (Usually frim old money families who have never been in touch with the average American to understand their needs and struggles.) They can promise all kinds of changes and such, then get to office and promptly forget about it. Our political system is as broken as our for-profit healthcare system.

Actually, the first same sex marriage license issued in the US was in 1975 in Boulder, Colorado by Clela Ann Rorex because she found there was no law explicitly saying she couldn't do so. In backlash, a man showed up to the courthouse with his horse requesting to marry it. She said that he couldn't because the horse was only 8 years old and therefore would need its parents' permission.

🎉 Yeah, elementary school. You know, when I was there as a wee small person, I was once in class with a person named Chris. And the teacher wanted to show us a script for acting for a program. So, she paired me with him and we were just supposed to do a couple of lines of talking. I didn't know the other lines of anyone else. When two other people came before us and said their script lines. I so, sat there in pure disgust while Chris was gesturing the act of surprise. The lines were "we invented the wheel." I was sick for some time- serious.

Before my fiance died in 2012, we had planned to drive from FL to Illinois, the closest state where we could legally marry. Our home state of FL wasn't legal yet. Americans could drive across the country and be married, then not married, then married, then not married. The horrifying part was if you or your spouse was hospitalized in a non legal state, the hospital could bar you from access to your spouse, or decision making capabilities. So our plan was to draw up legal papers giving legal and medical power of attorney to each other, and never leaving the house without copies. She died in an accident before we married and I was barred from the hospital by her family.

Before same sex marriage was legal, a trans person could legally marry a same sex cis person in some states but not opposite sex cis people. In other states, the could only marry opposite sex cis people but not same sex cis people. Legalizing same sex marriage made marriage easier and less confusing for trans folks because the government didn't have to define gender when it came to marriage.

Same sex marriage was federally legalized here in America when I was a senior in high school. I remember it in the news, online, people talking about in in the halls and in classes. It's a part of history that I lived through and saw the impact, cultural buzz, pushback, news articles, etc that came with it. I remember when voting for it's legalization was happening, the church my family attended said they wouldn't tell us how to vote, but that the Bible was very clear on God's view of homosexuality 😬

@@quinnbennettpelkey well there's a basic one for dealing with homophobes, which is that Jesus hung out with prostitutes and the homeless, so he'd hate their bigoted asses Then there's pointing out that the passage is a mistranslation Telling them that hell isn't a threat cuz I read Dante's Inferno, if you didn't read it in highschool it's a book about a dude who just leaves hell, and it's the book that informs all modern perceptions of God And finally if you really want to just destroy them for some reason Point out that Yahweh (the real name of the Christian God that was struck from records because it was deemed heretical to know the name of God by Christians) is actually a god of war/storms that was originally worshiped as a part of a polytheistic religion, but was discarded with a regime change or whatever, and a cult formed around that dude, and that cult changed his story a lot. So we have the origins, we have the knowledge that Christianity isn't real actually, so to legislate peoples lives about it, is the same as legislation of people's rights based on the whims of a flat earther

Kinda confused on the condescension in this vidoe about the US. If we move outside of the more recent fast-paced social normalizing of thing we can look at dates of evolution. GREAT BRITAIN founded in 1707 and the US in 1776. GREAT BRITAIN ( 260 years) 1967 legalized gay right, the US (227 years) 2003 legalized gay rights, GREAT BRITAIN ( 46 more years) 2013 legalized gay marriage, the US ( 12 more years) 2015 legalized gay marriage. So comparatively not as bad as people make it sound.
