I carried the son of the Army Special, the Official Police in .38 Special. The Army Special and Official Police were cop six-guns and were the same, just minus the name change in 1928. I used black rubber Pachmayr Presentation Grips on my OP, and carried it for the duration of my law enforcement career. Had to qualify yearly and was always proud of the smooth trigger-pull, with a slight stack at the end of pull before the hammer dropped. A post war production with some minor engineering improvements in the fixed sights over the Army Special. Thanks for a great info vid on a legendary Colt .38 Revolver, the Army Special!

What do you know about Colts Army Special in 41 long Colt? I hear that the 41 Colt was a respectable man stopper when it was used by the police.

The trigger-action on the Army Special was "hand-honed" and "hand-fitted" by a Colt Master Craftsman. It underwent numerous inspections before being released for sale. The Army Special is the grandfather of the legendary Python! Same frame, same awesome trigger-action, just a barrel and adjustable sight difference for the Python over the Army Special. Thanks so much for a great informative video!

At about 38 minutes you discuss period shooting techniques. Anecdotedly, in the 1970s I was acquainted with a fellow shooter whose elderly uncle was an NYPD cop during the late 19teens, 20s, and early 30s. He related that the Officers back then used the techniques you described one handed in single action. Though the revolvers were double action capable, single action was preferred, and a "qualification" exercise he participated in consisted of achieving 15 hits anywhere on the paper with 15 rounds onehanded single action on a standard bulleyes target at 50 feet. Its interesting to speak with the old timers. Many thanks for contributing your insights.

it was obvious and that was what made it so fun. Mae has a quirky and unique character that is so much fun to see. she is playful and sarcastic. it was a pleasant break from the information overloud that, no matter how entertaining and informative it is, tends to be Othais talking for up to an hour and a half with visuals that illustrate the narration. don't get me wrong, I love the show and watch every one, but it was a nice brake. now the range day is Mae loading and shooting the gun then looking at the target. Mae's commentary gave it a little more life and something to pay attention to. it doesn't have to be Mae saying "I load the gun, pew, pew pew, lets look at the target." she can make related comments about the shoot or small quirks about the gun that she can go into more detail at the end. I enjoy Mae's comments at the end and just wish to have a little more. Just food for thought. thanks for letting me rant. Love the show and I anticipate every one.

It's actually not rare to hear officers firing oddball guns for the BA (British Army). Till the end of WWI, officers are told to buy their own pistols anyhow they want be it of whatever nation or model thus during WWI, it's pretty common to see officers carrying odd pistols not made in Britain like the Model 3 Russian, S&W Model 3, Colt New Army, Luger, Mauser C96 (Especially Winston Churchill carried one), Ruby (Might have taken off dead French hands at some point) and many more oddities. This habit actually did not end till the end of WWII where the entire British Army was reequipped with the Browning FN Hi-Power.

I remember reading on the inside jacket cover of a James Bond novel that the author, Ian Fleming, was a retired British Naval Intelligence Officer, and in the photograph of him at work at his desk during the 1950s there was what appeared to be a Colt Official Police revolver.

those 130gr FMJ .38s sold by everybody are actually very mild loads. they spec at about 15k CUP, or just a tick hotter than my old wadcutter reloads would. can't get much lighter without having to give the pills bus fare to make it to the target on time, lol. even the .38 S&W, long colt, .32's of myriad ilk, and whacky metric stuff all run around that same pressure level (12 - 15k cup), they just make lousy velocity because they hold so little coal in the scuttle. the difference in a 9mm P and a .38 S&W is really just that 9 runs at twice the pressure the .38 does (30-32k cup territory). the .357 maggy isn't really magically increased in oomph by that 1/8 inch of case added, it's the 30k cup INCREASE in max load pressure, lol. i ran a police positive special of about 1920 vintage in .32-20 to maniacal pressure levels at one time (shooting resized backward .32 long hbwc with a .30 cal gas check) to demonstrate the "milk jug death ray" theory. really fast powders, "modern rifle in good condition only" max's as starter, and the unhealthy contempt of common sense born of youth, all combined into "a handful of lightning". extractions, of course, required, quite often, "a convincing" on the rod with a chunk of lumber. case life was "live fast, die young, leave a battered corpse". that poor, long suffering revolver took it for years, retired only when .32-20 cases became far too expensive to perform such tom-foolery. i'm guessing only, but an honest estimate would be about 35-40k cup (never blew a primer, flattened plenty though, lol), or close to double the "good rifles only" sensible loads. DON'T DO THIS, the example isn't given to encourage such idiocy. i mention it ONLY to illustrate those old baby colts are MONSTERS. unless a defect is detected, or evidence of EXTREME abuse, corrosion, neglect, etc accumulates to "danger zone" levels, these hoglegs are tough. i mean street fighting lower east side gang member of similar vintage kind of tough. i would NEVER have fired those in a "bicycle gun" topper, not even to win a bet. i might have in a REALLY tight winchester or marlin, but not often. an 1873 or police pos? any day, lol. when i finally sold the colt a few years back, the buyer was incredulous "YOU FIRED THIS???"... honestly, FAR better designed than a k frame smithy (had a 1914 vintage M&P at the same time, mild loads ONLY), which in that vintage cry uncle QUITE audibly at +p .38 factory civi load levels.

One remark - the Detective Special is built on the same frame ("D") as the Police Positive Special. Official Police begat the "Commando" as noted, and on a silat frame the Officer's Model Match, (adjustable Rear sight in .38 Spl), Trooper (.357) and ultimately the classic Python.
@Howler
@Howler 4 ай бұрын
Good catch. It should be added, just for sake of clarity, that the revolvers following the line you follow from the OP through the Python have the "E" frame designation, their lineage being the medium frame Army Special as discussed in this episode.

Love your videos. One small point, though, and others might have mentioned this already, but the Detective and Banker Specials were not based on the Official Police. The Official Police is a much larger gun (I have one, and a Detective Special). Those two little Specials were instead based on the Police Positive (which I also own).

This Model was also known as The Colt Official Police they changed the name after the Army lost interest in revolvers and Colt reliezed they had to change their Market " Target" was Police Depts at the time i believe they changed the name to Official Police in 1927 and more than 425,000 where made is merely a Colt 1908 Army Special under a new name. Very few purchases were being made by the military in the mid 1920s it was chambered in .38spl, .32-20, .41 Colt, and in the 1930's they where also made in 22lr. sorry i need to get back to the show sorry to distract everyone but the Army special later became the Official Police. it came in 2,4,5,6," BBLs.

@willykanos1044
@willykanos1044 7 жыл бұрын
I would suggest that the more vertical grip shape was also fairly popular in the United States. Still is as a matter of fact. It shows up on both the Colt Bisley model and the newer, more powerful revolvers. Ruger makes one. There is no doubt that the less vertical grip shape has been the most popular bit the Bisley grip is not rare - and was favored by target shooters.

You could also work in the fact Mae's personal gun if I remember right was a snub nose revolver. Apparently it's not about the length of the barrel, but how you use it.

You say the Army Special/Official Police led to the Detective Special. This is incorrect. The Detective Special was made on the smaller D frame while the Army Special was made on the E frame.

So I have a gun that is a Colt Army Special 38 but it has the grips and lack of lanyard ring of the Official Police. Curious exactly what I have. It was my Great Grandfather's police pistol in the 50's if I am remembering the stories correctly.

Hey, love the show, I was just wondering where is the talk about Russian arms? Did they just use British, or other entente weaponry?
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 7 жыл бұрын
I must agree that it is odd that over fifty episodes, we have no Russian-made/designed firearms at all to speak of, but I also have tried my hand at reading Russian and it is enormously painful. Therefore, i suspect Othias is saving Russian arms, of which they had many, for a day when he can hire a professional Russian translator.

Until the late 1970s Colt's revolvers were FAR superior in terms of trigger pull and general ergonomics to ANY "comparable" Smith & Wesson or Ruger wheel gun (and I've been issued or owned several of each). Accuracy was off the chain compared to the rival revolvers. I was the only Officer in my now former department to be issued a Colt's "Trooper" revolver when I went to work there (it was also the only one in inventory to sport a nickel finish, adjustable sights, AND chambered n .357 Magnum)) in 1988....I loved that revolver but had to turn it in when we switched to Ruger P90 series semiauto pistols chambered in .45ACP in 1992. If I ever run up on another Colt's Trooper, even one in blue that is in working order, that puppy is going home with me!

@fdmackey3666

ludditeneaderthal, I'm aware of the armscorp/rock island models and that they are supposedly being made on machines that Colt's sold some years ago. I've examined several such revolvers and, in my opinion at least, they are sad shadows of the high quality revolvers turned out by Colt's itself. I would rather pay the higher price for the Colt's production models as anything for the armscorp/rock island versions.

Did you have a "classic" Trooper or a Mark III ? The "classic" was more like a Python, I've had all access to all 3 and Smith "K"s and Rugers, and yes the Colts are the pick of the litter

well, they're cast 200 buck examples. you really can't expect colt fit and finish at that price point. but, a few hours of polishing and honing WILL produce the same sweet action, even if far more steve buscemi than antonio banderas in beauty

What was the logic behind the .32 caliber? Were not most service handguns going back to the earliest of revolvers at least in the .40+ caliber range? Not trying to ignite the "stopping power v carrying capacity" argument, however, it seems odd at a time where loads were nowhere near as powerful as they are today to go with "pop pop" instead "BANG" rounds.

same reasons we constantly bounce between .36 and .44 caliber military arms since the days of cap and ball revolvers: weight, recoil, costs. for the french, that 8mm was "traditional" as of 4 decades earlier. the .30 mauser was THE "magnum pistol round" of it's day (seriously). all over europe, shop keepers toted .25 autos, and cops .32 autos, revolvers, etc. so, the perception in that populace is "deadly weapon". now, when it comes time to arm up (cue Othias "war were.." etc), you NEED weapons. you can build factories. you can order trials, or, you can buy "off the rack". the latter means either ANY weapon is bought, or that which is most commonly made by the most factories is bought. in europe, 100 years back, that meant ".32 auto police pistol" of something like browning 1903 pattern. if revolvers, then .32-ish bore as well. as to "why??" in general, once again, tradition. .31 colts. 8mm pinfires, nambus, ad infinitum. more .32 rimfires than any human could remember. .32 cal-ish pocket pistols date back to flinters. .31 cal squirrel rifles were popular in flint during colonial times here. folks had .31 molds for balls. folks had horns and such for loading them. then the BP revolvers were bored the same to keep clem buying. then the fixed ammo ones, and the various harmonica guns and such as well. .32 was a kind of "standing limit wall" in truly pocket sized stuff. never forget as well, LOTS of humanity fell to .32s in that period. i sure would never want to "catch one". ALL the "modern rifles" had settled to the "tiny" 6.5-8mm range (from .40 to .45 mostly). the call for "big bore stopping power" came almost exclusively from colonial enterprises like india, and not "civilized warfare" among the euro-brethren. "all you needed" for a german was a .32, it was a really irritated sikh you needed a .45 for, lol.

I am starting to think that large companies should had given their designs to the Spanish to simplify before they started producing. It seems the Spanish had two main things about their firearm production. First, screw your patent laws. Second, simplify and refine everything for streamline production.
