In addition to anti-aircraft use, the 14-round strip was also used in the Mark I and Mark II tank, because the 30 round strips were too awkward in the confines of an armored vehicle. The Mark IV switched to the Lewis Gun, while the Mark V used a Hotchkiss with semi-rigid belts made up of 3-round solid segments flexibly linked to each other (with a 6-round first segment to make it easier to feed the belt into the Hotchkiss).

Well on this gun there's no records of Korean fighters or Korean militaries of both sides using this system. BUT, since I am a gun nut, I will still drop an interesting Korean firearms history. Sometime after the liberation of the Korean peninsula and the south was temporarily ruled by the US, there was a domestically made bolt action rifle - here's the crazy part - that takes an en block clip. Of the Garad. There's not much written or researched on this gun because there weren't many even made nor surviving the Korean War. Though I believe there is one example in the South Korean Army Academy - though it is in a pretty bad shape. And one showed up in a recent auction by Rock Island Auction. Yeah, we even made some crazy WTF stuffs aside from the Note 7. Thanks for the amazing video! - Jack the Gun Nut from South Korea.

@keith moore Never fired the HK. The 240 is not the ideal dismounted MG. It cannot be shoulder fired like the 60. It is on the heavy side with the 240L making it even more unbalanced. For reliability though, the 240 is vastly superior.

FWIW,I read a history of MG engines from Morris Garages forward. Right into the classic period of the much beloved MGB,there was one threaded hole in the engine that was metric with a metric thread. The Hotchkiss machinery moved from France was purchased by the always frugal Lord Nuffield and used nonstop until it wore out beyond any economical repair. Thus driving generations of engine restorers wild, unless they find out about this land mine in every engine. The very bit(cannot remember which one) needed to be put back in,or else. So Whitworth plus metric. Quite a combination. Quite a story.

It is completely insane. I was in Hong Kong 91-94, there were Norinco brokers there trying to push their products to buyers from Africa and South America. They could offer their new manufacture AK variants cheaper than the eastern European republics could sell surplus. After a night of drinking, one of their reps told me they could still turn a profit selling at a 4£ unit price. That tells you everything you need to know about Norinco. There should be more than 4£ of steel in an AK, even at 1991 prices in China.

I recommend that you do not slowly squeeze the trigger on an open bolt machine gun. This will wear a sear in the gun more and can damage it. Open bolt guns should be on or off and not squeezed. You basically jerk the trigger on and release it abruptly when done.

"Portable... is a word... you could use." It seems to be portable in the same sense as those early "portable" computers in the '80s that had an old-fashioned tube monitor built into them--a sufficiently motivated individual could _move_ one, but only in the sense that you'd move, say, a toolbox. When proper laptop-style portable computers with LCDs started appearing, those of us in the industry at the time started referring to the older type as "luggable" to distinguish them. :)

I'm not going to try to find out if it was already mentioned here, but I believe Ian McCollum from Forgotten Weapons also did an episode about this machine gun. Not on the Lightening series, but on his own channel , I think a couple of years ago. After taking it apart and putting it back again (which takes quite some time), he says that in the case there is ever going to be some Forgotten Weapons exam, it will be about the Hotchkiss Portative. WHAT a way to designing a ''light'' machine gun !! :-)

Man, maybe it's my eyes, but the lighting on that gun around the 5:00 mark is freaking me out. It looks like it's superimposed on the frame like an animation cel or something. I think it might be the extremely crisp lines on the underside of the receiver against Othais' shirt. Really cool looking, though.

13:40-14:00 "Where you can accidentally disassemble the gun." I LUL'd. One of the many reasons I love this nerdy gun stuff is little nuggets like that. Things that probably horrified our ancestors, we chuckle about now. Better to benefit from the advances in small arms design, than to be part of the process and have to stake your life on the equipment still in development.

The above the shoulder part of the stock might be had to use on flat ground but in a situation like a trench, AAA tripod or other uneven ground where your body is below it would be quite useful. The easy to find picture of indian troops with it behind sandbags and a trench but with a bipod instead of the tripod show the usages quite clear, I think tjat os was show in the project lightning series. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/IndianArmyMGCrewFlanders1914-15.jpg

You know if they only added a liever to the thingy that you have to push up every time before loading, and extend that near the trigger, so the gunner could have simply flick a finger. Thus simplfying the reloading process.

Used in 1940 by British light anti aircraft regiments in France, who hadn't been equipped with the 40mm Bofors. It was also used as an LMG by the ad hoc units and Pioneers, who didn't have Bren or Lewis LMG's, but had been thrown into battle as infantry with nothing but rifles. It was much better than nothing.

This sword has a peg holding the hilt to the blade so according to that description its a hand forged blade. The Japanese man that gave my grandfather the sword also named his second son after my grandfather. Which interestingly my grandfathers name was Phonsie. So, somewhere in Japan is a 78 or so aged man named Phonsie.
