Journey to the Chateau

Journey to the Chateau

6 ай бұрын

In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart are still on the mend from being sick over the holidays, so they decide to do some lighter work by beginning to go through some old photography negatives that are part of the chateau archive. The Chateau de Colombe document archive dates from starting in the 1500s, and the photo archive includes glass plate negatives starting from around the 1890s.
-----------
Music:
The Soft Lullaby, By David Renda
from Fesliyan Studios
----------
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

Hello dear Stuart and Patrick , I’m delighted to hear that you are both feeling a bit better but it does take the stuffing out of you, but “c’est La vie”. It was great to see some of the old photos from that huge archive that you have, but it would take a lot of time to go through them all. Maybe someone with a love of history might volunteer to research and catalogue it all for you. Big hugs and kisses from a very cold Ireland .😘🇨🇮

Hi guys! Don’t let the length of the skirts fool you. The photo of the two ladies is likely still 1890s. Skirts that were worn outdoors where hems could be damaged by grass, dirt, vegetation were shorter. It’s easier to tell by looking at the sleeve and neck treatment. Even wealthy women had their gowns re-cut to fit the current fashion. Hairstyles and men’s facial hair are closer for accuracy. I love episodes like this. Hope you’re both feeling much better. Keep up the great work!

I admire the restraint you've shown resisting the archives for so long. I would have explored each item on day 1!! You are so incredibly fortunate to have every single bit of those archives right at your fingertips! The glass plates are fascinating - I adore historical photography. Thanks for sharing them with us! (Be very very careful with then, the glass can break with very little pressure).

A literal box full of negatives and positives... what a treasure trove! The everyday costumes were every bit as loose fitting as today's styles, and probably many were hand-me-downs. It reminds me of my early childhood. Patrick and Stuart, you are sounding much better than you had been. Keep the recovery pace relaxed. It appears to be working. Hugs across the pond. 🫂

Very relieved and thankful you two took a break to rest and heal. Some of the stuff going around is nothing to mess with. Take as much time as you need. We're loving the old photos and history they bring to life. Couldn't agree more about the relative simplicity of French Country Chateaus. Nothing irks me more than over fussy, over gilded, nonsense in country chateaus. What I love about your home and Stephanie's is the lived in, relaxed, feel. Neither of your places have Versailles pretensions. Would not watch either if they did. Thank you for keeping it real. And keep resting!

Thank goodness that you both are feeling better and on the mend. Please do more walks down memory lane show and tell photo videos, they transport my mind to another time and place. And yes, the Chateaux we visited in France were very plain and functional which is how it was. That’s great that volunteers and guests will be visiting soon. Winter always turns into Spring. I am so happy for you and very proud of the ganormous amout of progress you both have made. Stay well🏰.

Good morning P & S, this was a magnificent video. Those photo negatives, oh my! So much nostalgia, the clothes the people wore, they were well dressed at the time, all over the world. Just lovely. We watched a documentary of an old gentleman, he must be in his late eighties or even slightly older, he is of Greek origin, him and his wife still together and I think his son is now in the bakery. Dad is not a fit as he used to be, but loves to show the pastry making of Baklava and Kataifi. It was just wonderful, and as I was watching I realised this is this person's lifetime career he is sharing. He became a little tired and had to sit down, but carried on showing us how it is made. It was amazing. I actually became so emotional, it is the same with your photos you shared with us. Those times can never be repeated! Are things better today, are people more content? I do not think so. You have to creative your own happiness and live accordingly. There is so much History at your Chateaux, it is wonderful. It was wonderful that the previous owners kept all the information, so the new generation can read what it was all about. Many blessings.

Happy to know you are taking care of yourselves after such a hectic year. Wishing you a complete recovery very soon. Love the historical discoveries, it will be very interesting to see more of them. Perhaps when you are both feeling a lot better, you could continue to film each time you look at anything in the cupboard. The filming could be in small segments to be shown at the end of a vlog once a month or shown as a collection of segments at the end of the year. This will not only interest people who watch online but also your friends and volunteers. I am certain that keeping records of living in French Chateaux in the present time and keeping past records safe, will be still be important in the future.

The glass plate negatives are rare and interesting. What a grand archive collection of documents for the chateau. I’m glad you both are modifying your tasks until you fully recover. Take care my friends, Ralph Rocchiccioli

Love love this video! So happy you showed us these photos. I'm looking forward to what other information you find out about the history of the Chateau. When you opened the cupboard I Gasped because of all the documents. I live working on Ancestry & have some ancestors that were from France & Immigrated to Canada in the 1600s. Very good records were kept. It would be interesting to find out the number of servants it took to maintain this Chateau. I eagerly await the next video of photos!

Wow. Exciting. So glad yous took a day to look in your *box of chocolates* what pleasant surprise of the old pictures!! I think an ARCHIVIST. Would be able to identify some of the people possibly. I really loved the MILITARY GUYS POSING MANY WITH ROLLY CIGARETTES IN THEIR MOUTHS😂 AND THE PHOTO OF THE FAMILY IN THEIR FINEST DRESS. PLUS THE MILITARY AND CROWD OF PPL IN THE TOWN SQUARE!! VERY INTERESTING! ❤ THANK YOU PATRICK AND STUART FOR SHARING UR PICTURES WITH US.❤

So glad you took a break you work so hard. Take care and get well soon. Loved the photos. Stephanie was talking about the difference in style between French and English curtain treatments so it was interesting what you described as the country chateau style. It's unsurprising that we have fallen in love with this style. Love your approach and everything you are doing. ❤

In the first photo you showed, there were 2 women with identical looking skirts and hats. I'd say they were twins. Additionally, one of the other photos showed 3 women, and the 2 on the outside looked like twins also. Not only because of the clothes, but by the fact they looked so similar. Great find.
