7 жыл бұрын

My last trip out metal detecting in an area that a church once stood back in the 1800's. I found this piece at the very end of my hunt and wasn't sure exactly what it was at the time. Once I got home and cleaned it up, I did some research on it I found out exactly what it was. I didn't want to show it with my normal wrap-up last time due to the nature of the symbolism, so I respectfully dedicate a video solely to this one item. The video speaks for itself....

I think the somber tone of this video is spot on. You show the item, explain what it is, and and leave it up to the viewer to think about such things. Well done.

Because of the thoughts you put into this video, I have liked and subscribed to your channel. That's my issue with a lot of people into history today. It DID happen, by today's standards it is unacceptable behavior, but back in the days it happened, that WAS acceptable behavior. We need to learn from history to better ourselves, not rewrite it to make us feel better about our ancestors. Also, we need to look at things as they were then, not now. Today, it's unacceptable and should never happen again, but like I said, back in those days, a lot of times you were apart of things simply because of that was the way things were done. The people then knew of no other way to behave. I liked your take on this and I hope you continue to find more history in the coming years.

Darrell Hook Thanks Darrell. You are right on the money. In those days it was not controversial to be associated with the klan, in fact it was almost normal. After the release of the 1915 movie "Birth of a Nation" klan membership grew to over 5million members. The movie depicted the klan as heroes and doing gods work. Once word got out about some of the heinous acts that were done under the klans name did people realize that something was not right and membership dropped to around 30,000. I don't want to justify the past, I just want to remember it and that's what finds like this one does. Keep those old days alive in our memory, good or bad, for all of us to remember and to avoid repeating any mistakes. Thanks for stopping by and I appreciate your comment.

Ashamed, you are pathetic. Completely unable to focus any attention on anything other than yourself. Sorry, you missed, When I grew up, you had to earn everything you got, we had winners and we had losers as it should be. I have fought in 2 wars for this country, how much of your own blood have you shed for this country? You need to live a year in a third world country. before you start saying how bad things are here, But you won't, because that takes fortitude and commitment and you are sadly lacking in those areas.

Amazing history indeed. I not only never saw one dug before but I never even knew these existed before last weekend. They don't talk much about this kind of stuff in school and to be honest, I almost felt like the FBI was monitoring my computer when I was researching it. An awesome find but a bitter sweet one as well. Take care and happy hunting my friend.

Quarter, been detecting for just under a year but the history I have found in the dirt has been my favorite part of this hobby. Just about 3 months ago I was detecting a park here in Cali that was settled in 1850 by a cattle rancher, as a favor to the Govt he allowed the U.S. Calvary to train on portions of his land in the 1870's. I got a nice hit with a strange sound on the back end. After digging it in about 4" of soft soil I found a large rifle cartridge. On the butt it read GOV'T 40-70 if I remember correctly. Looked it up online and found out it was the cartridge used in 1873 by the United States Cavalry...Doesn't get much better than that. Both the location and the find and the research pretty much all came together beautifully as I researched the park before I found the cartridge. I kept looking at the indentation the firing pin made and think to myself, that happened 143 years ago or there about. Last person to hold that cartridge was a man from our military over a century ago...wow, I do dig this sport. Thanks for your videos.

As remarkable and interesting as our hobby is , It also has its reality that history isn't always pleasant to discover. Like finding a lost set of keys that have the house keys, car keys and others that the owners may have looked for hours to find to no avail. Or the sad feeling we get when we dig up tags from a family pet buried lovingly and mournfully. And the remnants of better days that time has forgotten. And in this case memories of a bitter time that still has it's hold on society today. Each of us make new dicoveries each time we dig, be they good ,bad, or just a piece of discarded junk. How we interpret our finds and the thoughts of how they got where they were haunt us all in some.
@QuarterHoarder

You are right on the money with that. I've been thinking all week of the hands that this piece may have passed through and what those hands might have done. It is a bitter sweet find that I'm not sure just how to feel about it. Thanks for stopping by.

No disrespect intended at all, but, American minds are conditioned to focus on the worst and not the best. Our news channels focus on 'getting attention' for ratings so they show the worst. You might just do a real search of what the Klan was formed (about 4-5 million of them) to do and not what maybe 1% of them did. Reverse racism is prevalent today by 'conditioned' minds.
@heatherlockard9049
@heatherlockard9049 7 жыл бұрын
J Marrs , i agree that media has lost it's original intention thanks to competition mostly; however, i don't think this "conditioning" is just an American trait---parts of europe still hold court under the idea that you are guilty until proven innocent...completely opposite to American law....many countries hold that prior position. Auto racing is also a great indicator---most fans attend to see a crash...worldwide racing, this is what research shows....so, i believe it is more human nature to seemingly seek out chaos ....like how most history courses are filled with lots of war detail...but isn't as in depth about many inventors and groundbreakers---the human brain craves certain things...same way you can usually recall a dirty joke better than a childish one...just the human brain at work....not to much where the brain is geographically located.

Why is it that whenever one of these "treasure hunters" finds a coin they try to wipe off any sand or dirt with their thumb and in so doing scratch the surface of the coin and possibly ruin its value to a collector. I carry mayonnaise packets in my pocket to coat the coins with after rinsing the crud off with soap and water and nothing else. The mayo also stops any other oxidation from occurring.

Don't be sad. History is not repeating this blight. That's just fake news. From my perspective a person would be more likely to see a shooting star on any given night than to meet an actual white supremacist in person. They have been shamed, and rightfully so, back into the closet for decades. Even flat-earthers outnumber them. It was an interesting video, I have to agree.

Wow that is an amazing find but like you said so sad and tragic but a part of the history and even if you don’t agree with them it’s a true piece of history one that saddens me personally but if we don’t acknowledge the past we are bound to repeat it. Thank you for showing this I had never seen anything like that before and without your video I never would’ve known it exisisted

You and me both. I live up north (although not as far north as you) and I didn't even realize the klan reached up this far. I always assumed it was associated with more southern states. The more I researched it the more I discovered about my area and it is disturbing. Amazing yet terrible part of history that is rarely talked about.

I think that is a wonderful historical find (perhaps "wonderful" isn't the right adjective) but you know what I mean. :) A time in America we should never forget. I too like to try and imagine the "dropper" of old items I find. I found two old tavern tokens underneath a very old tree stump...I think that "dropper" may have passed out under the tree a couple of times! Subscribing to your channel! Keep digging!

the darker side of history, but still part of our history. definitely a interesting find to have, maybe the owner of that didn't really like it and chucked it out in the woods to be forgotten.
@QuarterHoarder
@QuarterHoarder 7 жыл бұрын
It is possible the owner did toss it away. Makes me feel better of humankind that way. Either way, there were still thousands if not ten of thousands that probably held on to theirs in a false sense of pride. Shame some parts of history can be so dark but I still think it's better that we don't forget. Thanks for stopping by Steve and take care my friend

I totally respect and share your thoughts. I also found something alike: A hole were a german soldier dumped all his Nazi related items.. (belt buckle, capbadge, medalions and nazo money) i guess he tried to get rid of everything when the allies were comming and didn't want to get cought. History is importent and the from the bad parts of it we can learn alot so that we dont make the same mistake again. When we find items like this its not about what it stood for, but what we can learn from it. Great video again bud, GL & HH Lars
