Part 3 of my journey with Sabaton! So far, I've seen 3 epic World War II stories. Looking forward to checking out all the other eras this band covers!
JUST A FEW DISCLAIMERS TO THIS VIDEO!
1. There is a part I say "Hitler agreed to..." I am not insinuating he actually was present at the treaty of Versailles representing Germany. I was simply following what was said on the Sabaton History Channel that Hitler originally agreed to follow some of the stipulations laid down at the end of the Great War. I know my wording sounds like he was the one who actually made the deal. Not so.
2. A handful of viewers were upset that I said the Krigsmarine was the "Nazi Navy". Again, I was following what was said on the Sabaton History channel. They almost made it sound like it was a new phrase created by Hitler to refer to the giant fleet they were building. I even asked to correct me if I were wrong (which many did).
WW2 may not be my area of study but I do know enough about history to stay away from generalizations and that not all Germans (and all things German) were Nazis during WW2.

The captain carved the coordinates into the compass when he realized they were not going to make it (irl too). Just before he died he gave the compass to the kid who grew up and was the older man in the video. I believe he is the son of the kid that was on the ship, as the sailor passed away a few years ago.

Okay I have to correct you a little bit. So the old man(the captain of the fishers boat) is the son or grandson of the "kid" that you see. Because if i am correct from what I found online the "kid" passed away in 2015 at the age of 103 years old. So yes the captain of the fishers boat is supposed to be a direct family member. So he passed the compass forward to his children/grandchildren

the story of the pocket watch from the actual Bismarck is that at the time the officer in charge called for it to be scuttled he carved into it the co-ordinates of the approximate location of where it would be sunk as a sort of obituary 'here lies RMS Bismarck', the man at the helm of the fishing boat is the son of the real life sailor who received the pocket watch onboard the Bismarck and he has kept it (the one used in this video is a replica), there's only a handful of people who know where the Bismarck is actually located and they have kept it secret out of respect to the dead as it is considered a war grave, the diver who discovered the titanic is the one who also found the exact location of the Bismarck. the ships used in this music video are all 'real' in the sense that they are exact cgi model replicas of what the various ships looked like at the time, you have Bismarck firing against the HMS prince of wales at the start, the torpedo bombers and the various cruisers of the royal navy bearing down on Bismarck towards the end of the fight etc, and it was all done by the makers of the game 'world of tanks'/'world of warships' etc, they collaborated with Sabaton to create this music video.

Fun fact is bismarck location is not far from titanic. Ballard crew found the Bismark first in 1989 while he discovered titanic in 1986. Fact is Bismark is setting in sailing position with most of the ship mainly intact. While most of turrets was blown off and scattered. if you look at the ship it front two turrets have been completely been blown off. Due brittish navy impacting the magazine compartment In middle of the ship. But pride of german navy flag is still visible at front of the ship. 80 some odd years later. Tirpiz sister ship of Bismark. Was behemoth of the ship to that was later sunken by brittish raf dam busters. Off Norwegian coast where it was sunken. Bismark was Hitler prized ship of kriegs marines. Also mention it was his favorite ship .

well there's the Sabaton Pantzer Battalion ... and it seems like every country has their own fanclub where they use a song title or lyric for their name. The video was made by Wargaming for World of Warships, so it's almost all CGI with actors. They have a short "making of" video on their channel. The video was after the Hood got sung, they only mentioned the Hood getting blown up in the intro. The Burning ship was the Bismarck. .. at the end it said Battle of the Atlantic. The locket is a compass, and it's there to link the ship captain of the "Primo Victoria" to the survivor of the Bismarck, like it's the same guy. A good idea would be to do a video of the song, and then a separate video on the history channel video of that song.

At the beginning, when they are getting out of the vehicles, the voiceover comes from a couple of Movietone News episodes, which can be found on the DVD version (or at least one of them) of "Sink the Bismarck!", a 1960 movie about the battle. Also, yes, the Kriegsmarine was the Nazi navy, its name translating almost literally as "War Navy." The ending screen reads "War knows no nation. This video is dedicated to those who fought to the bitter end in the Battle of the Atlantic."

Yes, Primo Victoria is another song of theirs and the name of their first album released in 2005. Like this video, the official video for Primo Victoria was made by the game company Wargaming (this one for World of Warships and the other one for World of Tanks). However, the other video is very high volume, making it hard to hear the vocals. That might be something to take into consideration.

I agree. I love the video and it's super cool but I think it works better as a promotion video for the game rather than a music video as the content of the video doesn't really have too much to do with the song. And yes, the sound effects are very loud. For a promo video, it's perfect, as a music video, not so much. :) But it's worth a check after you've heard the song I think, just for the epicness.

The Bismarck and her sister, Tripitz, were much smaller than Japan’s Yamato and Musashi. Bismarck saw battle and was relentlessly hunted. Tripitz saw battle and sunk after a fire spread to its munitions. Musashi was killed by air strikes in battle. Japan suicided the Yamato off Okinawa in 1945 when it realized it couldn’t fuel or feed its sailors. I love history. I just wish we’d learn from it. Can’t verify this but supposedly the fishing boat captain is the son of an actual survivor of the Bismarck. (?) The watch has the last known coordinates of the Bismarck. Oh, and I’m enjoying your channel! - A member of the Sabaton Army who wears her camo with pride.

@@HistoryBuff The Hood, flagship of the British navy, blew up so hard it actually damaged the Prince of Whales. Why she sunk is hotly debated to this day, but I personally believe it was her main magazine exploding that sunk her. Of her crew of 1418, only 3 survived. The torpedo planes that went after the Bismarck were from HMS Victorious and were swordfish biplane that were too slow for Bismarck's anti aircraft guns to lock onto and they hit her with a torpedo as they were turning hard and the rudder was disabled at the hard turn.

You've got listen to "The royal guard" - their newest song. The music video is of great production and is also nice "introduction" to the "Swedish War history" and army discipline. Sweden had a lot of political power in 17th century Europe, which of course was riddled with conflict. This period was captured in the 2012 album "Carolus Rex" (a Latin nickname given the Karl XII). "The Royal Guard" and "Livgardet" (which is the Swedish version of the song) are singles from this year which sort of carries on in the same line as that album. The song celebrated the 500 year anniversary of the forming of "Livgardet", which were, and still are, a regiment of highly trained soldiers sworn to protect the king at all costs. The infantry regiment has a long history of fighting and winning battles where the odds were severely stacked against them, the reason for this was because of the high quality of soldiers. The Swedish army was a clear example of quality over quantity, Sweden was forced into such a "predicament" thanks to their relatively small population. The king would also serve next to them in battle. The names are pronounced: "Joe-á-Kim" and "Pear".

You said reacting is not easy. Well it depends on how you want to react. There are lots of self called "reactors" and all they do is whipping their heads and say here and there things like "oh that's great", "that sounds good", "awesome". When it comes to Nightwish (no Nightwish video here I know) they might ad "oh she's tall", "wow she can sing" and for sure "I have goosebumps". That can't be so hard 😂😉 But I know what you mean and that's why I follow your and a few other reaction channels where the reactors really have something to say 😊 Btw I like the term "family" more then "army" too. That's why I never joined the so called "Nightwish army" because I don't want to be part of any kind of army. I love their music but be part of an army!? Thank you but no thank you. I believe a few years ago it was a "Nightwish family" too. Not sure when and why that "family" turned into an "army". Anyways... good and interesting reaction to that song. Funfact: In Germany we say "Die Bismarck" which is female because the artikel isn't bound to the name of the ship but to the ship itself. So it stayed female even the name is not from a woman. And I remember years ago I spoke with my grandpa about ww2 and he also said "Die Bismarck" so it wasn't a thing to turn it male in his time (ww2) either. Would be interesting to know where you got this information?

Pretty sure it comes from a supposed quote from her captain (Ernst Lindemann) that a formidable ship such as Bismarck, should be called “he” as befitting it's strength and power. The only evidence to support this come from one of the high ranking survivors of the Bismarck, recalling a half remembered conversation with Lindemann, so validity of this is tenuous at best. Somehow this statement got into the pop cultural zeitgeist of the english speaking world and now everybody incorrectly thinks the Bismarck was male. I hope that answers your question.

It's actually theorized that the ship was scuttled. Meaning the air hatches where opened to sink the ship. The captain thought the ship would be unsinkable after about 4 or 5 hours or just constant shelling from British ships. It just so happened that two cruziers fired Torpitos at the near same time. When the wreck was discovered everything was intact but it's main 4, 15mm canons where miles apart.

The ship on fire is the Bismarck itself. The Hood was sunk before the actual clips begin. You hear it mentioned on the radio as the band boards the fishing vessel they borrow. The Hood was destroyed by a single armor piercing shell penetrating into the forward magazine. Due to the British sailors focusing heavily on rapid fire, it is thought that they ignored rules for keeping the bulkheads between various ammunition and powder stores closed. This resulted in a massive explosion that ripped the Hood apart. Only 3 sailors of the 1500 man crew survived.

Also, as a historian you probably knew it better than me, but every couple of seconds it shows another sequence of the whole chase for the Bismarck. Like, even when it shows the ship capsized and the turrets falling out of the barbettes, it's literally like they found them separated on the bottom of the sea. Or even the recon planes passing over Sabaton's boat, yeah, they initially mis-identified another boat as the Bismarck. It takes some liberties, like the same British officer being present all along, but generally, every couple of seconds it's a litteral historical element of that episode. Blows my little mind, it does...

The Prince of Wales was a new ship and they hadn't properly worked it up yet, It wasn't really the Bismark that drove of PoW, by the end of the fight she only had two working main guns, once she had disengaged she got most of her guns working and swung back around and continued the pursuit until the Bismark managed to break contact. It was PoW who did the damage that forced Bismark to make for Brest.

That was a lot of fun! It's always a learning expirience when Sabaton is concerned :) It would be very cool if you checked out Sabaton History as well! Also speaking of recommendations a small note, when it comes to the album "Carolus Rex" I would consider going in order as it's the only one that technically "tells" one story as it follows the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire. Also both the Swedish and English versions of the songs are absolutly worth covering as they can make for "two side of one coin" kind of expirience with the slight diffrences between the English and Swedish versions of the songs.

My father happened to get to meet Jock Moffat, the Swordfish pilot who torpedoed the Bismark, damaging her rudder, forcing her to turn North into the Prince of Wales and the Rodney. He related the story of when he Torpedoed the ship...he said he heard this voice saying, "No now Jock...no now!" Swordfish had a crew of three...pilot, gunner and radio/navigator. The voice was the Radioman, with one foot on the wing, hanging on his safety wire to look out past the engine...guiding him with a better view in the rainstorm. His guide told him to drop...and they got the lucky hit. The rudder strike was a fluke. The Hood was destroyed by the Bismark. Of the 1408 men..3 survived. The burning ship was the Bismark. All four of her turrets destroyed....she was wallowing...until the British Destroyers moved in and torpedoed the wreck to sink her. Kreigsmarine is German for "War Fleet" Battle of the Atlantic I have also read Moffats book...which is a fantastic.

He was then assigned to Bismarck after the Launch and went with the ship to sea as one of the Engineering Officer. He survived because he was above working on the Fire control systems when the general order to abandon ship was passed. After making sure all Water tight doors where Open and the scuttling charges where set in his section he was told to see to his repair party, being as by that time the guns where all out of action he helped his men abandon ship. A few thing to clarified if you don’t mind. 1) Kriegsmarine = German Marine/naval not a nazi group per se. 2) At the end of the WW1 the restriction and fines was not given to Hitler but to the German country/people 3) hitler was part of the army that fought and his rise to power but was not in charge at the moment of WW1. If I’m wrong please inform me.

@@srg08 In studying history, I know one of the major flaws one can make is to make generalizations about a group of people, especially linking the present to the past. Discussing ww2 war stories gets tricky because it may be better to call the officers (and even those on the front lines) "nazis" because to call them "Germans" may cause more harm and resentment. I will definitely try to be extremely mindful of this.

@@srg08 its pretty similar to my family. I had an ancestor who fought for the confederate army in the Civil War. He didn't own slaves. He probably wasn't even fighting for the purpose of keeping slavery legal in the south. Nevertheless, he was in the Confederate army, fighting under that "purpose" and chain of command whether he agreed with it or not. I'm sure a majority of German soldiers didn't agree with what Hitler ordered, if they even knew half of what was happening. You're right though, it is so incredibly complicated and pretty easy to say the wrong thing. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what you mean. Are you saying the german soldiers following orders from Hitler's officers should not be called Nazis? Or even, "the nazi army/navy", etc? If not, what would you say is the proper way to address them? I love these discussions btw 😁

What happened was that the bismarck got a lucky hit right in an ammunition locker which made such a violent explosion that it got cut in half. Sad they didn't show it in the music video but that might have confused viewers. Cheers! :) Edit: yeah you corrected it but still, hood went boom immedietly

Yeah nah, the ships are definitely CG. After WW2 there were no new Battleships built (excluding the HMS Vanguard wich was still meant to be finished during the war) and the existing ones only saw little action. This was because: 1.Aircraft carriers being the main figthing force on the sea (this became clear after the battle of midway), they could send their aircraft much further than a Battleship could shoot. Thus making them ideal for attacking an enemy fleet, even when being out of radar range. 2. Battleships are expensive to build and maintain and when one gets sunk it's a huge cost in both life's and morale. 3. Though some US Battleships like the USS Wisconsin did serve in the Korean War performing shore bombardments, by the end of the cold war most of the battleships the US Had were placed in the reserve, up for scrapping or being refit to museum ships. Also sorry for potential spelling mistakes, English isn't my first language and I'm putting a lot of faith in the autocorrect rigth now.

Kriegsmarine is German Krieg - War Marine - All the ships of a nation However, the meaning of the term 'Marine' has changed since countries don't have their own merchant ships any more. Many freighters aren't even registered in the country where the operating company has it's main office. So 'Marine' today stand's for a country's Navy. At least in German. Although, the German translation of 'fleet' ('Flotte') is also being used. And just to make it even more complicated and fun, the sea branch of Germany's army prior to the reunification was called 'Bundesmarine' which translates to 'Federated Navy' from the full name of Germany, 'Bundesrepublik Deutschland', which translates to the 'Federal Republic of Germany'. That was to differentiate the West German navy from the 'Volksmarine' or 'People's Navy' of the 'Deutsche Demokratische Republik', which would be the 'German Democratic Republic', which usually was called 'East Germany'. History is fun, complicated and sometimes very, very confusing.

The crew of the Bismarck placed charges on the inside and sunk the ship rather than have it end up in the enemy hands as it was the pride of Germany back then....The allied hit the rudder and that was the doom of Bismarck, it could only go in circles and too big of a job to easily repair while under heavy bombardment. All torpedo walls were intact, they investigated the wreckage, even james cameron dove down there and filmed it lol. None of the allied torpedo caused any damage that could have sunk it and the same with the allied humongous cannons that bombarded Bismarck, Only clear penetrations(think there were 2 that penetrated the hull if i remember correctly) were far away from the water line and might "only" have taken out some people, but did nothing to sink it. The allied ship were too close and could not aim lower to hit Bismarck at the water line as a penetration there could have sunk her, but that is also where Bismarck had its thickest armor so even if the British ship were far enough away to hit Bismarck around the water line, it is a big chance it would have "bounced" as the ship side is angled and the shell being lobbied a bit so it drops on the way.....who knows, we can only guess until someone rebuild that armor and have another 406mm navel cannon fire and hit that armor :pI think Sabaton acted on old stories, the surviving crew always said they sunk it, but the britts always claim they sunk it, but evidence show that the crew on Bismarck that survived were right, no damage to any of Bismarks torpedo walls, no penetration of the hull from the 400mm brittish naval cannons that could have sunk Bismarck.....Sadly all three ships, Bismarck, Tirpitz and "never constructed"(?) were sunk, would have been amazing to walk on such a ship today on a museum......ofc even if they had captured it the allied would most likely melt it down for scraps to help rebuild after war, they were living in the now back then, did not care what we would want lol.....same goes with the Maus, I wish the soviets had captured both prototype instead of blowing them up and taking parts of both to reconstruct what it looked like and place in a museum....would have been fascinating to see how a turret of a maus would look like if not destroyed.....but still want to visit Kubinka museum just to watch the size of the thing.....ofc if you are from USA it might be hard to visit as it count as a russian military facility and you need oki from government to visit and I heard people from USA are often denied as I guess they think they are cia or something :P "#"#¤ sorry for the wall of text lol.....then again, KZfaq might autodelete the whole thing because I might have used a word they dislike :P

I know I'm late to the party for this one, but the first ship that fired on the Bismark was the Hood. It was the strongest British battleship at the time. But it's guns were inferior to the Bismarcks. Thats why the close up round fired at the Bismark fell short. The Bismark sank the Hood outside the Hoods gun range. This is why the British were so aggressive in fiding the Bismark.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but one thing to look into if you're looking at Sweden is Systembolaget. It has a connection to both history, politics and culture. Here's a wall of text about it! ;) Sweden, like many countries has a bit of a complicated relationship with alcohol. Clean drinking water wasn't always a thing and many times in history, alcohol was an alternative choice of drink since the water wasn't exactly good for you. And then there's all the other reasons people drink. In the 1700s every rule regulating alcoholic consumption was abolished and this led to a huge drinking boom in Sweden. We drank a lot. So much that the swedish government decided to intervene in the early 1900s after a big rise in sobriety movements. It ended with a complete government regulated monopoly on Alcohol that has lasted to this day. In Sweden, you can only get alcohol up to 3,5% in regular stores. For anything above that you have to go to Systembolaget. The government regulated chain of stores and only seller of hard liquour in the entire country. For anything 3,5% and under, the age limit is 18. To drink alcohol in bars and resturants the age requirement is also 18. To buy alcohol at Systembolaget you have to be 20 years old. Another limitation is the fact that Systembolaget aren't allowed to use regular marketing tactics like campaign prices and sales and their commercials are about responsible drinking rather than trying to promote the products. Norway and Finland has a similar system I belive but the laws regulating it can vary. I think the limit on alcohol in regular stores in Norway is 4,5% for example. There's a lot of different oppinions here about Systembolaget but one thing I do like about it, is the huge variety of alcohol you can get. Even if your closest store might not carry the type you want, you can just order it to that store. And if you want something that they don't actually offer, you can do a private import straight from the brewery/destillery/winery etc and then pick it up at your local store. (As long as the company ships to Sweden ofc.) And the staff are often very knowlegable and have their own customer support they can call if they can't answer a question. I always ask them for help with picking out beer or wine to go with whatever food I want to make and at least in my local store, they haven't steered me wrong yet. :) So there's a bit of information for you about Systembolaget. It's something I would encourage you to look further into since it has quite a fascinating history. And it's something that's rather different from many other countries.

I'm just speculating but I figure they didn't include the sinking of the Hood out of respect for any relatives of the crew. What happened to the Hood is quite a bit worse than what you described. Out of a crew of 1490 of which 1395 were sailors and 95 officers only 3 (!) survived the sinking. The account I have heard and read about is the following. The Bismarck hit the Hood with an armor-piercing shell that penetrated deep into the ship close to one of the main guns. The result was an explosion in one of the main munition bunkers made possible by a combination of dumb luck on the part of Bismarck and not following certain shipboard procedures correctly on the part of the Hood's crew. It is somewhat of a miracle that anyone at all made it out alive. The detonation was powerful enough to break Hood in two from the deck all the way down to the keel as I understand it. I remember one of the survivors saying in an interview that I saw that he witnessed something akin to a roman candle shooting up from one of the deck hatches followed by a huge explosion that briefly knocked him unconscious. At the time he was stationed up high in something similar to a crow's nest. An observation post of some kind - I forget the exact word for it. When he came to the vertical ladder he had climbed to get up there was now horizontal because the ship had folded in on itself and was rapidly sinking from all the water that rushed into the end that was split open when the powder bunker blew up.
