@@countdowntorevolution9986 Maybe, but that seems to be the sum of his courage, as he hides amongst his bodyguard, while they died for him and if it weren't for Stanley's timely intervention would have been eventually slain by Richard. He has no reputation as warrior or being possessed of any great martial prowess in contrast to both his predecessor and successor.

I like the fact that the battle of bosworth and sekigahara were eerily similar with each other. Each were decided by the intervention of third parties on the battlefield and both have generals in the losing side who didn't commit their own troops in the battlefield. Also both battles resulted in the establishment of a new dynasty (Tudor & Tokugawa) respectively and end of the major fighting in the civil wars for both countries (although sengoku Jidai would drag on until 1615 with the siege of Osaka)

I was going to comment about it, too, but you beat me to it. Lots of similarities between what would become Great Britain and Japan. Both island nations, near their culturally linked mainland. Both become dominate powers, reliant on their advanced technology. The later English Civil War, momentarily brings the Republic, and the New Model Army. While in Japan, you have the Meiji Restoration, that overthrows the Tokugawa Shogunate, with a modern reformed army. Now both still have figurehead monarchies, and both currently in a financial pickle, though Japan seems to be emerging from it, while its earlier on in the UK, in its cycle.

@@circleancopan7748yea they largely agree Richard didn't kill them, the last sighting was prior to bosworth but Richard hadn't yet reported declared them bastards, his wife however and Margaret Tudor were already making moves and well Richard's wife died, Margaret as well as other Lancastrians had more reasons to get rid of the princed than Richard ever did. Hell adopting his nephews would have solved the issue of succession and secured his place even more had he actually launched a coup

@@commiemeth I don't know about 'adopting' them since Richard had branded them as illegitimate due to the fact that his brother Edward IV was technically married when he wed Elizabeth Woodvile. That was the basis of his claim to the throne over Edward's children.

I don't understand why the video says Lord Stanley had been a supporter of Richard for decades. Stanley and Richard knew each other from the latter's time as Warden of the North and they loathed one another. Stanley built his power and riches on kidnapping the children of other nobles and holding them for ransom as well as other dubious acts that were only made possible by the chaos of the war of the roses. Richard forced him to put a stop to his racket and he never forgave him. This is why he held his son hostage because he did not trust him at all to be loyal. It's worth mentioning as well that Stanley is the quintessential side switcher of the period and he never committed to a faction until a clear winner had emerged. The guy was far more monstrous than anything Tudor historiography can conjure up on Richard III.

He probably wouldn't have sat on the throne for much longer. A humiliating defeat during the battle would likely have caused further dissent among the English nobles, and he would have just been defeated at a later point in time. Which is one possible reason why he chose to fight to the death. His ability to keep the nobles in line was based in large part on his military abilities, and he couldn't afford for that reputation to be dashed.

But there was no need to retreat. Richard had enough army to hold his high ground. Plenty of archers and canons to soften any uphill attack by his enemies. But no, he decided to rush into the middle of the battlefield with his smaller contingent, right into the jaws of his enemy and a trechurous lord Strange. It was a bold, but stupid move that cost him his life.

Richard III was a troubled king, but undeniably one of the fiercest warrior in history. He participated in almost all of Edward IV's (his brother) major battles in the Wars of Roses and played critical roles in each of them. His final moment in the Bosworth was the most glorious death a solider could get.

Margaret Of Beaufort, Henry VII’s mother, deserves her own video. She was a pragmatist who orchestrated Henry’s rise to the thrown for almost thirty years. The army that Henry fought with at the Battle of Bosworth was funded by her.

@@mbgal7758 Yes, but his mother was a wealthy woman, and armies need funding. Her goal for the entirety of the War of The Roses was to get Henry on the throne. Lord Stanley did deliver the crucial blow on the battle, but her funds also helped hire troops.

@@TheStrategos392 I have to disagree with you there. I don’t believe she was trying to put him on the throne before the disappearance of the princes. It just wasn’t feasible and doesn’t go along with what we know of her activities. She was desperately trying to get his title as the Earl of Richmond back and his confiscated lands for a long time and she wanted to smooth things over with Edward so he could return to the country. Henry’s claim was so weak, I think you’re over estimated her scheming. If you have any type of evidence to support the claim she planned it for 30 years I would love for you to point me in the direction of those primary sources.

@@mbgal7758 Dan Jones, the historian, did an entire hour documentary on Margaret Of Beaufort, where he discussing these very issues. Now perhaps scheming the entire 30 years for Henry to obtain the throne is debatable, but she saw an opportunity for him once the Princes disappeared and Richard III became hated at court. Her actions during the thirty years war culminated in Henry Tudor ascending the throne. It is an interesting debate. I came to that conclusion because of the end game. Watch the documentary, it is very interesting.

Wow! What an intro. One of the most famous moments in English history, one that I've seen many times in various retellings, both live action and not, but never quite like this. In particular, there are many attempts to portray Richard "sympathetically," but until this one I've never really seen one that truly does it right.

This is another excellent video & intriguing intro by HistoryMarche. It really has been a long time coming, covering the War of the Roses. The period that inspired the story of Game of Thrones. Historically, for both Henry VII and Richard III, at best, they are represented by Daenerys Targaryen (Henry VII) and Stannis Baratheon with hints of Tyrion Lannister (Richard III). Many would see certain or some parallels between the War of the Five Kings & Daenerys's return from exile to claim the throne.

Major error around 9.58, Richard's father claimed the throne due to his descent from Edward III, via his second son; Lionel of Antwerp, not John of Gaunt as it was the Lancastrians who were descended from his third son; John of Gaunt.

Awesome video lad. As a fellow Yorkshireman I take pride in the War Of the The Roses and I’m glad other find the history fascinating from all across the world. I highly recommend a documentary on KZfaq called ‘Britain’s Bloody Crown’. It’s a small tv documentary that shows that starts with the Plantagenets taking the throne and it ends at Bosworth field. P.S I am from Wakefield and I had to do the battle for my coursework in high school.

This and Sekigahara are examples of decisive battles whose outcome (especially the impact on the nation's history) depended on the indecisiveness of one lord's army before joining the other side near the end of the conflict.

Lord Stanley's position and behavior was brilliantly done and imo shows he had decided long before the battle to join Henry. To see it, first remove Stanley's forces from the battlefield altogether, Richard's army was so much bigger he could swing two of his battlions around and easily envelope Henry. Now put Stanley's forces back on the field but have him join Henry right away, again Richards army is so much bigger he could still easily envelope the Henry/Stanley combined army. So where could Stanley place his forces to keep Richard from enveloping Henry? Right where he did. If Richard tries to wheel his two battalions around on Henry then Stanley can hit them in the rear. Stanley plonked his small force in the perfect spot to keep two thirds of Richards army from closing in on Henry and his behavior confused Richard enough to make this take effect.

He charged without full support of most of his company, and got surrounded, he shoulda ordered an all out advance, I think he got spooked into making a rash decision when he saw stanley was not on his side and wanted to intercept Henry asap, either way it made no sense he had better position and numbers

The Battle of Bosworth Field on 22 August 1485 was the last significant battle of the Wars of the Roses (22 May 1455 - 16 June 1487), the civil war between the houses of Lancaster and York. The House of Tudor was an English and Welsh dynasty that held the throne of England from 1485 to 1603.

This is an outdated version of the battlefield. Dr Glenn Foard's mapping of the battle debris, cannonballs, and the famous silver-gilt boar badge, place the battle a mile SW of Ambien Hill. Henry spent the night of Aug. 21 at Merevale Abbey. Northumberland could not move against Henry because the Stanleys were covering Henry's right. Much evidence of artillery duel between the presumed position of both Stanleys against Northumberland, who was facing south. Lots of updates needed here.

9:58 Richard, 3rd Duke of York head of the Yorkist faction, father of Edward IV and Richard III was NOT descended from John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. (That would have made them Lancastrians) He was descended from Edward III through Edmund of Langley, Duke of York and then through a female line from Edward III second son, Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence. Henry Tudor was descended from John of Gaunt through his mother, though it was an illegitimate line that was later legitimized and then subsequently barred from inheriting. Not that it mattered after Bosworth.

Richard iii downfall was based on two things: Henry Percy 4th Earl of Northumberland betrayed Richard by not supporting Norfolk when ordered. Why? When King Richard was based in the North of England as Duke of Gloucester he was a rival to Percy, and when Richard became king he opted to place nephew in taking charge over the north instead of Percy obviously creating animosity. Secondly, a man called lord Lidley offered his support to Henry. This is important because this lord owned the land around Bosworth and therefore able to strategically position Henry’s army on the battle field. Richard would have won if not for the betrayal of the nobles. Richard fought so bravely until his dad end.

Duke of Norfolk,was slained by a Knight named John Savage,his brother Thomas Savage was Archbishop of York and Chaplain to Henry VII.both were the nephews of Thomas and William Stanley via their mother Katherine Stanley. Thx for content @HistoryMarche ❤

You are mostly right and the other half of being Peter Belish - Littlefinger. Despite the likelihood of losing a son, like Walter in GoT, and later Peter in latter seasons, Stanley wanted to know who had the chance of being more successful. Like in the S7 Battle of the Bastards, The Vale came at the last min to save John from the Boltons & retaking the North. Unlike John, Henry's army was slightly still more professional, had more robust leadership (Sir Jorah, Grey Worm, Sir Barristan & others) and akin to the levels of Daenerys's forces.

Hearing about the manor in which Richard went down fighting- is inspiring, however evil a man or not he may have been- such incredible records of his and his retinue's last stand truly do show his true colors, consumed by wrathios and hatred for his enemy, he went down like a cornered lion, despite everything else. Good job on the companions on delaying that order by the way, quite an incredible last stand.
