In this video, my buddy Marcos Giron (currently ATP #70) share some tips to improve your timing when hitting groundstrokes, both forehand and backhand, to always hit "on top" of the ball and pressure your opponent even when you're not "feeling the ball" great.

@@MyTennisHQ You guys have the right timing, preparing the swings while the ball is still crossing the net. That's the timing that I use for hitting those penetrating balls. And I always watch the bounce of the ball to see what height the ball is if I can flatten it all out or just hit it back normal.. But many rec club players unfortunately have late timing with the ball and let the bounce get up too high because of having poor late racquet preparation Late timing causes them difficulties in hitting back the ball or they hit weak loopy short balls.

+1 for footwork. i find that focusing on the kneebend and over-preparation with the feet helps me the most when it comes to timing. unless i am sleep deprived and then im just screwed

What a great video and I haven't even finished the intro yet 😂 I was so luck to meet Marcos right after his match against Rafa and I watched Mackies match next to Marcos! I told him about how I loved the POV video you guys made! Amazing experience, I was in shock because I didn't realise it was him at first😂 Knowing that Rafa made history at the AO and Marcos was part of that, and I got to speak to him poof, mind blown 🤯

This is such brilliant advice. Focused on taking the ball at it's apex while playing today and it did wonders for getting my timing and footwork in sync right from the start. Definitely making this idea a priority for warm ups from now on! Love watching Marcos play and was rooting for him at the Australian Open!! Not sure how people even beat Rafa in a best 5 set match tho :(

I have been using this 'hit the ball at the peak' during matches, with the 90/10 rule and really hitting through the ball more. It has really stopped the noise in my head, improved my feet, awareness, and damned if the ball doesn't really penetrate the court so well. I had a guy with a huge serve tonight, and I was on TOP of that big serve and the returns were safe, hard, and consistent. I was thinking clearly---normally, I chip and slice, and am definitely not on top of the ball moving forward. The difference was like being in someone else's body playing. Thank you both so much.

Was just at Delray and watched the full Giron vs. Sandgren match. Marcos won in straight sets, but definitely played better in the back half of the match. Great to see him playing well. Also, seems very humble and appeared to be a genuinely nice person. Quite a role model, working through the multiple surgeries, working hard on the court, etc. Hope he continues to progress.

Marcos strokes sound so raw without dampener, can't imagine myself not using one. This was a great tip indeed. I was extremely off today, definitely lazy footwork, bad attitude, not following through. Backhand was terrible, I shanked more than the ones I hit clean, and the rest were just off centered. Even my eyes were lazy. Will focus on these 2 tips, hitting at the peak to move my ass and track the ball seeing how it bounces. Thanks!

The commentary during rallies is really nice, it is as if you can read the mind of Marcos. It would also be great/helpful to hear where the power is coming from, e.g. "ah the shoulder rotation feels great"or "the legs just give me so much power in this shot" or how to direct the shot.

Thanks for sharing this video. Got insights from a match I watched on TV 2 weeks ago rooting for Marcos Giron, whose performance I've been following thanks to Karue and he hitting with him many times on this Channel. Nadal jumped all over him at the beginning and during all the 1st set but then things leveled up and Giron caught his timing, but was forced to lose it as the match went on under Nadal´s pushing and pushing as he often successfully does.

I saw this match live on TV. Was rooting for marcos to take a few sets lol. Love the insight and your discussion with Marcos. One question I have is that a lot of pros are switching to a bigger head size racquet and i wonder if Marcos also thought about it. Shapovalov switched from older Vcore 95 to new Ezone 98 and he seems to be hitting hard with less error by letting relying more on the increase power/sweetspot? I realize you also review the new Ezone and didnt like it as much. Anyway great content here!

@@MyTennisHQ I like the tip for me personally. But as a coach myself, would you say this is a good tip for every level. I really love your content but I do think that you could maybe specify every time you give tips to whom it applies. It might be misleading otherwise. Because taking the ball after the highest point, when it is coming down again is surely easier, so better suited for beginners. The ball then loses pace and the timing is a lot easier because the ball is in line with the stroke (ball coming down, racket moving up, as apposed to hitting the ball on the rise). Again, love the content. But maybe specify to which level it applies?

In my last tournament I really tried to move towards the ball and take the ball early. I played this opponent already before, a lefty who played quite aggressively if I played too passive. I won against him in the semifinal in the club tournament, but during a training match he won a set against me. Now we played again in the final in another tournament, and I was really focused on taking the ball early and moving forward as much as possible. It went well for me. In the first game I even played a volley backhand topspin from the t line, something I never did before in my “career”. Every time I was struggling in the match it was because I was waiting too long and not moving well. Thanks buddy for the video! From which part of Brazil are you? I am from Curitiba, Paraná, but living in Switzerland since 1988.
