I met this guy recently when I found out he's from my hometown. Tracked down his antique fixtures store and he showed me around, although things were sort of scrambled at the time and mostly commission-based. Nice guy, we talked about our mutual interest in antiques and where to watch reproductions of silent movies with machines like his. Some of his pieces were made for the haunted mansion in Disneyland. @@rfc-793 he explains all the strings on his own channel. But the whistle when he pulls the string spins a small drum with holes in it that makes a whistle sound. So the harder he pulls the string the faster it spins and it makes a louder sound

For those wondering this is known as an American photoplayer. It was used throughout the early 1900s to provide sound effects and music during silent movies. The piano and organ would automatically play and all the sound effects would be used by pulling cords, pressing buttons, and petals as joe demonstrates. You dont need real musical talent to play them. These made a variety of unique sounds like train whistles, throwing something, birds, bells (think tom and jerry when tom gets hit in the head particularly hard) and much more.
