He’s not using Flanger on this song, he recorded it with a Roland Jazz Chorus

“Walking on the Moon” has some fun tone with the chorus and very bouncy delay, but it’s better with a bass player filling in the gaps… a “Hit the Tone” with Julia as a guest?”

Love the tutorial. I learned this song back in March. And had to build out my pedalboard to try to get that tone.

The slight # is due to the Producer/Engineer adjusting the speed of the tape (back in the day - varispeed), which was done to accommodate someone not playing the correct tempo. Sometimes because too much Beer, not enough Cookies or Tacos (hint?). If you listen to the original recording of Layla, similar problem. It was really Rock and Roll, know what I mean?

There's also an echo effect on there, possibly a fairly long slapback, either that, or it was double tracked. Possibly some mild chorus in the background too.

There is a mid length delay, you can hear it clearly in the string noise as Andy slides down the neck

The lesson and tone is great but I think it really needs a compressor in the front! I believe it was on majority of the time during first 2-3 albums.

Great tutorial......and very informative. But, let me help some of you "cheat" a little. I play this in "G" rather than "A" for two reasons. First, the riffs can be played in "first" position, even using a few open strings, so no "broken wrists". Second (and maybe most important) it's a little easier to sing. I have a moderately high voice, but Sting's squeal is beyond the abilities of many of us. Dropping one whole step makes the vocal part a little more accessible to many vocalists. No audience has ever complained that it doesn't sound "right"......and it doesn't "kill" your voice for the rest of the night. Thanks for listening. PS.....as to gear, I use a "regular" Telecaster, a Vox AC15 clone with reverb, and a chorus and Klon klone pedals. Gets me pretty darn close.

Yes, I too got a good laugh out of the “Every Wrist You Break” comment. Mostly because it is so true! After a minute or 2 my wrist is killing me. A big tip of the hat to Andy Summers for his unique and inventive style and being able to play this with his wrist still intact at the end of the song - especially in a live version I watched where they play the song for over 5 minutes. Thanks for making this video and all the best to you!

Didn't Andy use a Roland jazz chorus 120 with his 61 strat on this tune? not a plexi in sight.
@joermnyc
@joermnyc 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the flanger seems too harsh here, thought he used a chorus more often than the flanger (either that Roland or the first Boss chorus.)
@arighani9989
@arighani9989 2 жыл бұрын
@@joermnyc He used the mistress and his Telecaster most of the time before Synchronicity. For most of Synchronicity, Andy used the Roland JC-120 with his Stratocaster. The electric mistress is a particular flanger where you can dial in a proper chorus sound, but for this song, the chorus is in stereo, which is exactly what the JC-120 did. So you’re right about the chorus on this song.

I think the lesson misses the most important part: overdub this simple riff on a basic drum+bass demo so that your riff literally makes the defining hit single of the entire career of your superstar band (which is falling apart in the process), have it become song of the year, reach the top10 in most of the world... and have the song credited to the pretty bass player who 38 years later makes more or less $2k a day from the single (and from the royalties from a sample of *your* riff by a rap artist, whom he sued). Get paid 15% of that cash (according to some, none according to others) and call it a day 😂

Excellent, thank you. How many repeats on the delay? Is that a quarter note with one repeat? I have figured out a way to play with a capo on the second fret which is a less of a wrist-stretcher and you avoid that pointer-finger movement.
@aletondaX
@aletondaX 2 жыл бұрын
But, with a capo on the 2nd fret you wouldn't be able to play the bridge which includes the F major chord
