I think part of the issue with judging a young players development and the reason some many young players seem like at least slight disappointments, is we have gotten used to Messi and Ronaldo. Up until these two, you could have a generational career, be considered a legend, a top 20 or even top 10 or even top five player of all time and win the Ballon Dor once. Like you win one, come in top 3 once or twice, top 10 maybe twice more and you could be a top five player of all time. Not going to name all the great players that could fall into this category but it’s basically every great player of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. This whole, win the Ballon Dor or come in second every year, third at the worst is something only Messi and Ronaldo have ever pulled off. That year to year form has simply never happened before and there is no reason to think it will happen again any time soon. Like let’s say Neymar wins one Ballon Dor three years from now. And the rest of his career is about on par with how his career has gone until now. People would say his career was somewhat of a disappointment or that he never fully lived up to expectations. But that simply isn’t true. It would just mean he wasn’t Messi or Ronaldo. Do you think Maradona had the kind of career where every single year he was so on form that he should have 5 or more Ballon Dors and as many top three placings? Hell no. And that’s Maradona. Was his career a disappointment?
