Slalom Skiing … Slalom Wakeboarding … Slalom Skiboarding!
The origins of wakeboarding- surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, AND waterskiing! Our sport is so unique because it has roots in both boardsports and towed watersports. Many wakeboarders, even really experienced great riders, have never been exposed to the waterski roots of wakeboarding. Spend much time with me and you’ll hear me say that one of the keys to enjoying wakeboarding is to “keep it fun.” Mix it up, try something new, get outside your comfort zone-go try slalom wakeboarding-it’s an incredible workout, it’ll make you a better rider, and it really gives you an appreciation for the skill required to run the course on a slalom ski.
Did you know there was a period early in the history of wakeboarding when skiboarders competed on the slalom course as part of an overall wakeboard tournament? They had specialized boards, practiced techniques, and had dedicated lingo for slalom skiboarding. The score from slalom skiboarding would be added to the trick run and “expression session” to award an overall winner. Sounds strange, but hey that’s our roots.
Questions? Comments? Drop them below-and let me know if you’ve ever run the course on your wakeboard? What’s your PR?
--------------
Ok, ok let me be serious on just one thing - planning to run a course on your wakeboard? Don’t be that guy. Do not try this with a big ole’ wake boat! The boat path buoys on the course are about 7.5ft wide and your wake boat is about 8.5ft wide-it won’t fit. Instead, respect the sport, respect the turf, and actually make new friends with the slalom ski crowd-I betcha they’ll be more than happy to give you a rip on yer skiboard.

Taking it back to 1989-93, when wakeboard slalom was a part of the competitive wakeboarding format. Even was 50% of the World Championship title scoring system from 1990-93. Fun video, Shaun!

Hey Shaun, always loved this video! Might be time to bring this challenge back... I just saw DavidOC's attempt at this from last year - full pull at 28mph but couldn't crack 30mph and certainly not as many inverts or Raleys 😂 Anyone foil a course yet....?

That was amazing. My first wake board was to small for me and poorly designed, I fell a lot, then I tried a good wake board and the difference was night and day. So if you find that you can not cut hard and you fall a lot it's probably not you but a poorly designed board.

Hi do you have any tips to set up a wake board? I've got a hyperlite love it. Just don't know how to set up the boots and where my feet should be placed. I'm left foot forward. I mainly slalom and barefoot but like getting on the board too as I'm a social skiier. Should be feet be wide? Also I feel more comfortable standing towards the boat a bit like you in the video. Should be boots be angled out as I think I prefer them to be more pointing straight as if you where on the swim deck putting on the board and the boots facing to the driver not on an angle or have my left boot angled and the rear right boot straight. I hope I've been as descriptive as I could be hope you're able to offer some advice as you're a pro wake boarder.

It's on my list of videos to shoot in the future so keep an eye out. Here's a couple quick tips. For binding width, most people ride the middle inserts, which is a good place to start. Angle, go somewhere from 9-15 degrees ducked out on each foot for starters and see how it feels. Hope this helps for now Corey.

@@Shaun.Murray Thanks mate. Much appreciated. It's pretty much summer now here in AUS so thanks for your help. Will give it a go. Also thanks for the videos you put out. Many Pros prefer to charge people and it's your type which keeps the skier spirit willing to share and teach for pretty much nothing. Many thanks again.

Hi Shaun, my neighbor is putting in a permanent slalom ski course on our small 21 acre skinny lake this summer. I am a wakesurfer. Do you think we can wakesurf and wakeboard in a slalom ski course with all those buoys? Any advice would be appreciated. I have an Xstar Mastercraft 2002 21 foot boat. I am worried I am going to have to sell my house and move to a bigger lake. I appreciate your video. Thanks!

I've wakeboarded and even surfed through/near courses, which can at times bum out the owner of the course. I will say that you shouldn't go down the boat guide boys if you're allowed to use the area. If it's something that you all decide is ok, go between the skier bouys and the boat guides. This will give you good room. BUT, the bigger wakes can pop the bouys off the anchors sometimes and the wakeboarder's ropes can wrap around the bouys and pop em off too. So be careful and considerate
