Have you heard the terms head voice and falsetto used synonymously? They're not the same and the difference may shock you. www.octavehighereast.com/hit-h...
For way too long there has been confusion about the terms head voice and falsetto. And it’s for good reason: these words are incredibly confusing for singers. They lead us to believe things are happening outside of our voice.
But with the help of modern science, we know that in head voice, the voice is not really coming from the head. And falsetto is not false; it’s real and useful sound.
So let’s talk about the difference between the falsetto and head voice and most importantly, learn how to use each in singing.
Falsetto is a type of singing that sounds like a breathy, flutey and hollow sounding tone. It’s usually found in the highest registers of male and female singers.
We’ve all heard someone sing in falsetto voice before. The breathy falsetto is used for effect to sound otherworldly and beautiful or young. Some of my favorite singers have used falsetto for effect: Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and Sam Smith have all used falsetto.
Other times, falsetto comes from the voice breaking and is completely undesired.
We’ve all heard this too. The voice cracks as it rises and a breathy quality is all we hear, usually with a big drop in volume.
But in order to completely understand how the voice disconnects falsetto, we need to talk about what’s happening in falsetto voice in the vocal mechanism.
Falsetto voice is nothing more than a breathy phonation in the higher register of your voice. Phonation is the sound caused by the vocal folds when they vibrate.
So how does this happen?
When a singer is straining and too pressed in their singing, the muscles in the vocal folds can give up and stop vibrating at their full caliber. So rather than having an even tone at the top, the voice goes from pressed to too breathy.
Falsetto can also happen when a voice that starts breathy loses even more resistance in the higher register.

Really helpful video - thank you! I’ve found that falsetto may be fine in the studio with a Neumann U87 and state-of-the-art compression in a vocal booth or otherwise empty room, but bring that out live and you could destroy your voice via windburn in an attempt to hear yourself. VERY few singers have done so without losing their voice early; notably Philip Bailey has succeeded in using it safely tour after tour, but I bet anything that he learned to rely on great monitoring and to control his airflow / resist the instinctive response of adding more air. It also seems much harder to “break” into falsetto when focusing on core support, which I suspect triggers a closing of the folds that is already calibrated to the amount of air released/withheld by the diaphragm, but I’m not confident that I understand it correctly or completely.

How can I sing high notes and low notes without straining or damaging my voice?.
@ramseyvoicestudio
@ramseyvoicestudio 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Kim Ann, great question! First of all, hitting high and low notes without straining is a skill. One that's best achieved by taking regular voice lessons. You can book one here: www.ramseyvoice.com/book-singing-lessons/ But to answer your question, low notes are achieved by loosening the vocal folds, while high notes are found by stretching the vocal folds. Doing this on exercises that allow you to stay connected from the bottom to the top without raising (or lowering) the larynx, those notes will come much more easily. Yes Arka, that's absolutely right. There's nothing wrong with singing in falsetto. As a singer and teacher, I prefer to sing with a fuller head voice because I feel it gives you more control than falsetto. That doesn't mean falsetto is wrong. It's just another mode of singing.

If I can hit a note in falsetto, is it possible to train to reach it in my head voice? Or will I always have the same limit? I feel like I absolutely cannot go higher than a C5 in my full voice, but I can easily do a pretty falsetto up to at least C6 (probably higher). Is there potential there, or does that not make a difference? I feel like a classical sound is the only way I can hit high notes with a less airy sound, but I'm pretty sure it's still falsetto, as it has nowhere near the volume/power of a true soprano. P.S. Your explanations are lightyears better than any other I've ever come across. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your videos!!

@@ramseyvoicestudio thanks for your response! I believe I was referencing the moment at 8:00. Also, all the “bratty” sounding warmups are things I’ve been instructed to use before to get into mix. So I think my question is, would you say “mix voice” and “full head voice” are kind of the same thing?
@bingbong2179
@bingbong2179 2 жыл бұрын
@@hfaithheinrich95 The moment at 8:00 was definitely mix voice and not head voice. He didn't give exapmles of head voice here I think because for most people a mix voice is a much bigger priority. Having a great head voice is pointless if most of the time you're singing in the lower range is crap. Not sure if you're still wondering this but mix and head voice are definitely not the same thing. Head voice is strictly using the TA or thin vocal cord muscles, whereas mix uses both your thick (cricothyroid) and thin vocal muscles. That's part of why mix sounds so good I think. Because you're getting that extra rich tonality from your head voice whilst still maintaining the weight of your chestier sounds. A full head voice is basically just a really well developed TA muscle, i.e. getting improved closure and the right amount of breathiness coming through.

Don't reject falsetto too quickly. Believe it or not it's the secret to truly great singing. Without developing the falsetto 'oo' vowel there is no natural way of opening the throat which allows access to the high notes. The reason most teachers advocate yawning and a depressed larynx is because it does allow a kind of access to the high notes but at a cost of making the voice very dull. To compensate they advocate pinching the vocal folds which then makes the sound harsh. There is absolutely no reason to do any of this if one takes the time to develop the falsetto which solves all these problems. Once the vocal folds are fully stretched out using the dark falsetto 'oo' vowel then one can start to add chest which will bring the brightness back in hence the term 'Chiaroscuro'.

Hey Perspicacious, as we go through our voice change, the vocal folds thicken. Which means that our range will change and become lower. I have a question. I like your videos. But I feel you're a bit biased against falsetto. Because some of the greatest singers have really strong falsettos and it can really be beautiful. Actually, I wish I could sing falsetto like that. To be honest, many people say my falsetto sounds better than my normal voice and that's the very reason I'm watching your videos. I'm not good in my head voice. I grew up listening to Prince and even usher and Justin Timberlake all of whom have great falsettos prince being the best example. Can you make a video on how to improve falsetto specifically? I, and I believe others, would like to know that as well. Thank you.

Hey Kabir, thanks for your question. The most important thing to do when your voice changes is to continue to sing across your whole range. That means chest voice and head voice (even if it's falsetto). Low notes and high notes. If your voice change is mostly over, it would be really beneficial to get with a voice teacher who knows what they're doing to help you "CONNECT" the chest voice and the head voice. That takes skill and a teacher who really knows what they're doing to guide you.

Hey Kabir, chest voice has a powerful and vibrant sound at the bottom notes in your range. In my experience, chest voice comes quite naturally for guys. Sorry. You don't know what you are talking about AT ALL. Don't mislead people. Falsetto is not produced by the mucosa. Is produced by an only partially connected vocal folds. Learn before teaching anything.

eddie51500, you're absolutely right. Falsetto is produced by the vocal folds (of which the mucosal layer is part). But rather than the vocal folds being partly connected, it's really more about the depth of the vocal folds that creates the chest voice dominant or head voice dominant sound. In falsetto, the vocal folds are connected completely however the DEPTH of their connection is quite thin.
