NIgel, great work on the the engines - looking forward to the next steps with them. Hope the new oxygen hoses work as you expected. Take care, and best wishes to Jess.

Oxygen hoses??

@@NigelsModellingBench Yes, at 38:19 into the video you show a package that just arrived and stated (I think) that they were oxygen hoses, from which I inferred they might be for use somewhere in the A-20 build.

A lot of aircraft, old and new, have two spark plugs per cylinder just for safety reasons. I agree, it's pointless putting detail where it will never be seen. I often feel like I'm being lazy not adding detail sometimes but I rather spend my time of the visible stuff. I suspect some people maydisplay the engine with one of the cowls off though :)
@stevengriffin78736 ай бұрын
I'm surprised no one has produced a set with separate cowls with internal bracing like they did for the B17.

Petrol aeroengines have dual magneto ignition systems. Each cylinder has two spark plugs each connected to a different magneto. Pug A to magneto A, plug B to magneto B. The magnetoes are self-contained ignition systems that do not need the main electrical systems to function. This has been standard since the early days of aircraft. Multi-bank engines may have two magnetoes per bank. This self-contained and dual system is so that the engines can function for a time if all other systems fail.
@NigelsModellingBench6 ай бұрын
Thanks, these engines seem to have no magnetos??
@peterhopkins47486 ай бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench That is odd. Not sure where they were on those engines. Radials sometimes had them on the reduction gear housing on the front of the engine but most engines had them on the the accessory gearbox on the back of the engine with the generator, hydraulic pump etc. Usually they were positioned in a reasonably accessible place to allow the ground crew to service and adjust the points and timing etc. without removing the engine.
@NigelsModellingBench6 ай бұрын
I thought they were generally fitted to the reduction gear housing? It makes sense what you say here as there are two heavy cables going from the ring back between the cylinders.
@peterhopkins47486 ай бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench They may have moved them for different variants of the engine or type of magneto (Bosch, Bendix etc) Look for a pair of matching (they might be symmetrical handed) units probably on the top of the gearbox or on the sides. More research for you :-D I know you love that as much as building.

Dear Nigel, I take a similar view to engine detailing, but indicated in a recent video (for the FW190- thanks!!) that doing mods where it doesn’t matter is a great way to learn and to make errors where they can’t be seen. Nevertheless your approach is, as ever, well thought through! Great work, compelling as usual!! Regards, Z

I found the one thing you need to pay attention on the engines are the exhausts. One of the few things I didn't like about the build...a bit fiddly, and once glued they don't want to bend if you screw up the alignment.

Hi Nige. I am probably wrong but it’s difficult to know without having the parts in my hand. I wondered whether those C section bits were meant to be fitted with the cut-out to the front. It looks like the pushrod ring etc covers that front bit so, if the gap was at the front, they might fit without any additional work. Plus the bolt detail would still be visible on the sides of the cylinders. Just a thought. Let me know one way or other. Cheers Martin
@NigelsModellingBench6 ай бұрын
Hi Marty. Yes, you are wrong maye. the instructions show the parts going on with the gap at the back. If they were fitted that way round as you describe we would have the same issue against the baffle plate.

@@NigelsModellingBench I am building the A-20 with the Eduard kits. As I see the Eduard part 52 C-ring it goes the opposite way that you are stating. It would be placed on the back side of part L35 and extend (or dead end) to the front. The back side of L-35 is the wider side. That is how I did mine. I went out to Eduard site and found a picture of how they say it should be done. www.eduard.com/out/media/gallery/9108/zoom/321012_04.jpg.

@@NigelsModellingBench The A20 is definitely their best kit yet.One thing I would say is whenever you have a yoke always have the axle as a separate part preferably brass.That way you get the maximum strength and ease of painting separately.Looking forward to their next subject hopefully a B26.
